Bali, Indonesia

Bali works for the two of you only as a two-base trip, seven nights in Ubud and four in Sanur, flying December 23 to January 5 on a Taipei one-stop fare. It costs about $6,886 for two (about $6,280 to $10,609), fits the firm USD 7,000 ceiling by about $114 only if the airline-direct total and the hotel promotional prices hold, scores about 56 on the stated experience weights, and has no winter scenery.

Advisor memo

Bali is a conditional yes: two bases, about $6,886 for two, and a thin margin under the ceiling

My recommendation

I would plan Bali as a conditional yes, not a confident one. The version I would book is two bases: seven nights in Ubud, then four on the Sanur coast, flying China Airlines through Taipei on December 23 and home January 5. Priced from public pages it comes to about $6,886 for the two of you. A realistic range is about $6,280 to $10,609, and the swing is almost entirely airfare and whether the hotel discounts I saw are still there in December.

That puts you about $114 under your firm USD 7,000 ceiling in the middle case, and over it in the high case. Entry is manageable: Indonesia sells an e-visa on arrival to Indian passport holders for IDR 500,000 each, and the official advice I could find is to apply at least 48 hours ahead, so the last safe date is about December 21. The one thing that flips this to a no is an airline-direct fare well above $5,200 for two. I could not complete a direct search, so that check comes first.

Why this trip fits the two of you

You listed food and culture first, then beach, winter scenery, nature and value. Bali serves food and culture and nature very well, gives you a calm, swimmable beach on the east coast, and gives you no winter scenery at all. I score it food and culture 4 out of 5, beach 3 (wet season), winter scenery 0, nature 4 and ease of travel 2, which comes to an experience score of about 56. That clears the 55 floor, but only just, so this is a trip you choose for warmth and Ubud, not for ticking every preference.

The honest cost of the window is that December 23 to January 6 is the island's busiest stretch. Raj Varma, writing at Travjoy, calls it the peak Christmas-to-New-Year rush and says hotel rates climb 40 to 80 percent. The Booking.com prices I captured are far below that, with strike-through list prices two to five times higher, so I would treat them as promotional snapshots rather than a stable December rate.

How the trip unfolds

You land in Denpasar at 2:35 PM on Christmas Day after 22 hours 55 minutes door to door. I would not try to do anything that evening. A car to Ubud takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half depending on traffic, and I priced a ride-hail or taxi at IDR 450,000.

I would put you in Ubud for seven nights at Bliss Ubud Spa Resort: 9.1 from 2,812 reviews, breakfast included, free cancellation on the rate I saw, and $620 for the seven nights. I could not tell whether it carries Chase Travel benefits from any public page, so check the portal yourselves.

Ubud earns the long stay because everything you came for is within an hour. Start slowly. The Campuhan Ridge Walk is free, an easy paved trail above the river that is best in the cool morning. The Monkey Forest is a protected jungle temple complex full of macaques; keep sunglasses and phones zipped away. Then hire one driver for a full day, about IDR 650,000. Go to Tegallalang first, before the tour buses. Kieren Windsor of Bali Untold and an editor at EasyTripAI both warn that December rain and crowds change the picture, and EasyTripAI says the terraces are post-harvest and less photogenic then, so go for the shape of the valley, not for the postcard. Next is Tirta Empul, the spring temple where legend says Indra pierced the earth to make the water of immortality; the visit-only ticket is IDR 75,000. Goa Gajah, an 11th-century cave carved into rock, is IDR 50,000. I would skip the paid swing at Tegallalang unless the weather is perfect.

Eat in warungs for lunch. Kai, writing at Bali Deeper, averaged about Rp 50,000 a day over thirty days of warung eating in Ubud, and says the babi guling at Ibu Oka falls off noticeably after about 1 PM, so go at 11:30. Save one or two evenings for a proper restaurant.

New Year's Eve is the day I would plan around, not for. Travjoy says the best tickets and reservations sell out two to four weeks ahead and Sunset Road slows to a crawl by 9 PM. Stay in Ubud, book a dinner now, and stay off the roads. EasyTripAI's writer reports a four-hour drive from Ubud to Seminyak on December 27, which is why I would not base you in the south.

On January 1 you move to Sanur. It is the quiet side: the sea on the east coast stays bath-warm and swimmable in December while the west coast turns rough. I picked Prama Sanur Beach Bali: beachfront, 8.3 from 4,020 reviews, breakfast included on the rate I saw, $435 for four nights. For a better-reviewed but pricier option, Sumitra Luxury Villas and Resort scored 9.5 at $708. Your last days are walks along the beach path, a long lunch and a spa afternoon. The airport is about 20 kilometers away. You fly home at 3:45 PM on January 5 and land at 6:45 PM the same day.

What it will really cost

Here is the arithmetic for two people, in dollars. Flights are $4,592: $2,296 each on China Airlines via Taipei, from the Skyscanner page for the exact dates and two travelers, taxes included. I did not see bag fees. Hotels are $1,055: $620 for seven Ubud nights plus $435 for four Sanur nights, both Booking.com snapshots. Meals are about $525: 22 person-days at IDR 300,000 plus four better dinners, converted at IDR 17,889 per dollar. Ground transport is about $184: three transfers and three driver days. Activities are about $129: six paid sights, the visa and the Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 each. I added a $400 reserve for hotel tax and service charge, bags and a wet-season surprise. It is a reserve, not an insurance quote.

Observed: flights and hotels, as public snapshots. Derived: meals, transport and activities. Estimated: the reserve. Nothing is airline-direct.

Value against the best alternative: at 56 experience points, the low case of about $6,280 gives roughly 8.9 points per thousand dollars, the high case of about $10,609 gives about 5.3. That is decent value because Bali's local costs are low; the money is in the flights.

Where this can go wrong

The flights are the big exposure: 22 hours each way with no nonstop, and the cheaper fares of $4,015 and $4,277 break your 24-hour cap on the outbound. December is peak wet season. Kieren Windsor reports heavy rain causing flooding and road closures across South Bali in both December 2024 and December 2025, and about 16 to 20 rainy days in the month, so build a slack day into the week and keep your Ubud plans flexible.

Traffic is real. Several writers say December gridlock is bad around Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud. Who should not pick this: anyone who needs guaranteed sun, anyone who wants snow or winter scenery, and anyone who hates crowds over New Year. The firm ceiling also leaves little room: a $1,000 bad surprise puts you over.

The best alternative

The strongest competing itinerary is the same dates with a single base in Sanur for eleven nights and day trips to Ubud by driver, which is about 45 minutes each way. It removes two transfers and a hotel move. The cost is the Ubud nights: Prama for eleven nights was $1,655 against $1,055 for my two-base plan, about $600 more, though Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur was $832 for eleven nights. I prefer two bases because Ubud mornings are the best part of Bali and you get them without a daily drive.

The other alternative is leaving December 19. That was $5,956 for flights alone on the best one-stop fare and about $8,811 all in, over your ceiling, so I would not.

What to check next

1. Airline-direct fare. Search China Airlines and EVA Air for SFO to DPS, December 23 to January 5, two adults, and read the bag fees. If the total for two is above about $5,200, this trip drops to a no. 2. Hotels. Re-open the Booking.com results for Bliss Ubud and Prama Sanur for your dates and read the tax and service line at checkout. If the 11 nights jump past $2,000, the ceiling stops working. 3. Entry. Open the official e-visa site, check India's eligibility, and note the 48-hour advice; the arrival card is separate and due within 3 days of landing. 4. New Year's Eve dinner. Reserve it, and decide whether you want a beach club or a quiet table; both sell out. 5. Chase. Look at the Chase Travel portal for both hotels; I could not see them on a public page.

Options And Value

Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.

Option 1: Bali, Indonesia

Value rating: Conditional

Food and culture and nature are strong (Ubud, temples, terraces), beach is calm but wet-season, winter scenery is absent and travel takes 22h55 out. Priced at about $6,886 for two it fits the firm USD 7,000 ceiling by only about $113, and the high case does not fit.

Compared with: Against the Dec 19 departure (Candidate B, about $8,811), this saves about $1,300 on airfare and fits the ceiling; against a Sanur-only 11-night stay ($1,655 at Prama) it spends about $600 less on lodging and adds the Ubud culture days.

What changes this rating: An airline-direct China Airlines or EVA total above about $5,200, or hotel tax and service above the $400 reserve, moves this to Weak fit; a confirmed direct fare near $4,600 keeps it Conditional.

Price confidence: Partly observed

Flights and the 11 hotel nights are observed public snapshots for the exact dates and two adults; meals, transport, activities and the reserve are derived from published prices and a stated exchange rate; no airline-direct or property-direct total was obtained.

Two bases, 7 nights in Ubud for temples, rice terraces and food, then 4 nights on the calm Sanur coast for the beach, keeps every transfer under about 1.5 hours and the flights under the 24-hour cap.

Arrives Christmas afternoon after 22h55 of travel, lands in peak wet season and the busiest fortnight of the year, has no winter scenery, and the all-in total leaves only about $113 under the firm ceiling.

Party cost: USD 6,886.07. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-11T03:58:00Z.

Party: 2 x $2,296 = $4,592, taxes and charges included, as shown on the Skyscanner page for 2 travelers, economy, USD.

Assumptions: Aggregator total for the exact dates and two adults, read back from the page header. Bag fees are not shown on the results page and none was invented; EVA announced a change to international baggage fees on Sep 3, 2026. No airline-direct total was obtained (the EVA and China Airlines booking flows could not be completed with the rendered controls in this run).

Planning range: USD 4,592 to 5,437. Low $4,592 is the cheapest itinerary found that keeps both directions under the 24-hour cap (cheaper 2-stop fares of $4,015 and $4,277 exceed it). High $5,437 is the EVA 1-stop 18h return fare. Bag fees and an airline-direct recheck can move this either way.

Hotels1,055partly observedUbud, Dec 25 to Jan 1 (7 nights): Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, Booking.com 7-night public price $620. Sanur, Jan 1 to Jan 5 (4 nights): Prama Sanur Beach Bali, 4-night price $435. $620 + $435 = $1,055 for 11 nights, 2 adults, 1 room; about $95.91 a night average.

Assumptions: Public Booking.com prices for 2 adults, 1 room, USD, review score 8.5+, breakfast included at both chosen properties. The results pages show deep strike-through discounts, so these are promotional snapshot prices. Free cancellation shown for Bliss and Prama; tax and service charge not itemized on results pages. Property-direct page (Prama) could not quote an 11-night stay.

Planning range: USD 939 to 2,466. Low $939 = Ulun Ubud Resort & Spa $504 (7 nights) + Prama $435. High $2,466 = Bliss at its struck-through list price $1,349 + Hyatt Regency Bali $1,117 for the same Sanur nights, which is what you pay if the limited-time deals disappear. Results pages did not itemize taxes or service charges; those are covered by the reserve line.

Meals525.46derived22 person-days x IDR 300,000 a day at IDR 17,889.06 per USD = 22 x $16.77 = $368.94, plus 4 special dinners for two at IDR 350,000 each = $156.52. Total $525.46.

Assumptions: Hotel breakfasts included. IDR 300,000 a person covers a warung or local-restaurant lunch (IDR 25,000 to 80,000), a mid-range dinner (IDR 70,000 to 180,000 with a drink) and coffee or snacks. Four dinners at IDR 350,000 a person are a labeled spending scenario for better restaurants, not a quote. Service charge and tax on restaurant bills are not included. Exchange rate from the Oct 11 2026 market rate page.

Planning range: USD 300 to 1,106.82. Low $300 = mostly warungs (Rp 50,000 a day was one writer's 30-day average). High = three tourist-cafe meals a day at IDR 300,000 each for 22 person-days. Rainy afternoons push people to cafes, which is the main upside risk.

Ground transport184.49derived3 transfers (airport to Ubud, Ubud to Sanur, Sanur to airport) x IDR 450,000 = 3 x $25.16 = $75.48, plus 3 private-driver days x IDR 650,000 = $109.01. Total $184.49.

Assumptions: Ride-hail or taxi quoted at IDR 400,000 to 500,000 one way for a 45-minute to 1.5-hour coast-to-Ubud run; the midpoint is used for all three legs. Driver day rate is the operator figure for 10 to 12 hours with car and fuel. Short local rides inside Ubud and Sanur are not priced.

Planning range: USD 150 to 420. Low assumes hotel shuttles and one driver day. High assumes peak-season surcharges and traffic-delayed waits (one writer reports four hours Ubud to Seminyak on Dec 27) plus short local rides.

Activities129.12derived2 travelers x IDR 1,155,000 = 2 x $64.56 = $129.12. Per person: Monkey Forest 130,000 + Tirta Empul 75,000 + Tegallalang terraces 50,000 + Goa Gajah 50,000 + Tegenungan 50,000 + Barong dance 150,000 = IDR 505,000, plus e-VOA 500,000 and Bali tourist levy 150,000 = IDR 650,000.

Assumptions: Entry fees from a July 2026 fee list; Tirta Empul is IDR 75,000 for visit-only (holy-spring bathing needs a separate arrangement and is not priced). Tegenungan is IDR 30,000 on one list and 50,000 on another, so 50,000 is used. Visa and levy are mandatory government charges. Swing, spa, cooking class and guided treks are not priced.

Planning range: USD 99.12 to 379.12. Low drops two paid stops. High adds roughly $250 for one optional paid experience (a spa session, cooking class or the Tegallalang swing at IDR 150,000 to 300,000 a person), none of which is priced from a menu.

Insurance and contingency400estimateOne reserve of $400. This is a reserve, not an insurance quote.

Assumptions: Covers hotel tax and service charge that the Booking.com results pages do not itemize, checked-bag fees, a wet-season rebooking or a missed-connection meal, and small incidentals. A travel-insurance premium was not priced and is not included.

Planning range: USD 200 to 800. Low $200 if tax is already inside the shown rates and bags are included. High $800 if tax and service run about 21% on top of hotels and both travelers add two checked bags.

Flight Choice

Option 2: Bali, Indonesia

Value rating: Weak fit

Same experience as the 11-night trip but two extra Bali days for about $1,925 more all-in ($1,364 of it airfare), pushing the estimate over the firm ceiling.

Compared with: Against Candidate A it costs about $1,925 more all-in for two more days; the extra days are not worth that unless remote work makes them close to free.

What changes this rating: A Dec 19 fare below about $4,800 for two or a firm hotel quote near $90 a night would move this to Conditional.

Price confidence: Estimate only

Flights are an observed aggregator snapshot, but hotels for Dec 21 to Dec 24 and most other lines are extrapolated.

Adds two more days in Bali by leaving Dec 19, for people who want a slower first week and can use the remote-work option.

Ground transport257.16derived3 transfers (airport to Ubud, Ubud to Sanur, Sanur to airport) x IDR 450,000 = 3 x $25.16 = $75.48, plus 5 private-driver days x IDR 650,000 = $181.68. Total $257.16.

Decision summary

Conditional: about $6,886 for two in the middle case (range about $6,280 to $10,609), fitting the firm USD 7,000 ceiling by about $114 only if flights and hotel snapshots hold.

Candidate A is two bases, seven nights in Ubud and four in Sanur, flying China Airlines through Taipei. Observed flights ($4,592) and hotels ($1,055) make up about 82% of the $6,886 total; the rest is derived from published prices. No airline-direct or property-direct total was obtained, so every observed number is a snapshot. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/dps/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

The verdict is conditional rather than viable because the margin under the ceiling is about 1.6% of the budget and the high case ($10,609) is far over it. Experience scoring against the stated weights gives about 56, just above the 55 floor. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/dps/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Entry and transit

Indian passport holders can use the Indonesian e-visa on arrival (IDR 500,000 each, 30 days); apply at least 48 hours ahead per the official advice summarized by a visa guide; Taiwan transit is airside only.

Indonesia lists India on its visa-on-arrival and e-VOA eligible list at IDR 500,000 for 30 days, extendable once. The visa is applied for on the official e-visa site and paid by Mastercard, Visa or JCB card. The advice to apply at least 48 hours before departure and validity within 90 days of issue come from a visa guide citing the official page, so the immigration site is the source to confirm. A visa guide page also contains a generic block that says visa required, $75 and 5-7 days; those are template figures I do not rely on. https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/web/home · https://visafield.com/visa/indonesia/e-voa/visa_guide/ · https://www.visitplane.com/visa/India/Indonesia

Everyone entering must also submit the free All Indonesia electronic arrival card within 3 days before arrival, and foreign tourists pay a one-time Bali tourist levy of IDR 150,000 each through the Love Bali system. https://visafield.com/visa/indonesia/e-voa/visa_guide/ · https://lovebali.baliprov.go.id/faq

The priced routing connects in Taipei on one ticket. Taiwan consular guidance summarized by a transit guide says a passenger who completes the connection airside at TPE does not need to meet Taiwan entry requirements; leaving the airport or changing airports (TPE to TSA) is different. Confirm with the airline that both directions are one ticket with a same-airport connection. https://4stogo.com/blog/posts/transit-visa-requirements-for-stopovers-in-taiwan · https://halfdaytour.taiwan.net.tw/Details/97d540b8bfce4145ba8d60bc35a600cb

Climate and weather

December is peak wet season: about 16 rainy days on the coast and 20 in the highlands, short heavy bursts, 26 to 30 C, and recent Decembers with flooding in the south.

Bali Untold reports December averaging 16 of 31 rainy days on the coast and about 20 in the highlands, 210 mm of rain and about 28 C, with humidity that can make afternoons feel like 33 C. It also says short periods of heavy rain flooded South Bali and closed roads in December 2024 and December 2025, but not in 2022 or 2023. https://baliuntold.com/visit/best-time-to-visit/bali-in-december/

Bali Holiday Secrets calls December hot, humid and full of short tropical downpours, usually in the afternoon or evening. The east-coast sea near Sanur stays swimmable while the west turns rougher and murkier, according to Travjoy. https://www.baliholidaysecrets.com/bali-in-december/ · https://travjoy.com/blog/bali-in-december-a-guide-to-the-christmas-and-new-year-rush

Experiences and closures

The best-value experiences are free or cheap: Campuhan Ridge Walk, Ubud Palace and Art Market are free, and the paid sights (Monkey Forest, Tirta Empul, Goa Gajah, Tegenungan) cost IDR 50,000 to 130,000 each.

A July 2026 Ubud fee list shows Monkey Forest at IDR 130,000, Tirta Empul at IDR 75,000, Tegallalang Rice Terrace at IDR 50,000, Goa Gajah at IDR 50,000, Tegenungan Waterfall at IDR 30,000, and the Barong and Kris dance at Batubulan at IDR 150,000; Campuhan Ridge Walk, Ubud Palace and Ubud Art Market are free. Another operator lists Tegenungan at IDR 50,000, so I used the higher figure. https://ubudadventures.com/blog/ubud-entrance-fees · https://baligoat.com/ubud-day-trip

Tirta Empul is open daily 7 AM to 6 PM per the temple site; the standard ticket is visit-only and does not include bathing in the holy spring pools. Sarongs are required at active temples. I found no Christmas or New Year closure notice for these sights; that is not a confirmation that they are open, and temple ceremonies can restrict access. https://tirtaempul.com/ · https://baligoat.com/ubud-day-trip

EasyTripAI says December is post-harvest so rice terraces are less photogenic and a 67% chance of rain by 7 AM was reported for the terraces; one writer says popular yoga studios book out two to three days ahead in December. https://easytripai.com/blog/bali-december-reality-check

Neighborhoods and lodging

Ubud is the culture base; Sanur on the east coast is the calm beach base; the south (Seminyak, Canggu) is where December traffic is worst.

In Ubud I chose Bliss Ubud Spa Resort (9.1 from 2,812 reviews, rice-field-view suite, breakfast, free cancellation, $620 for 7 nights). Dewangga Ubud sits 0.2 miles from downtown at 9.0 from 1,691 reviews and $629 for the same nights, a walkable alternative to a stay 1.5 miles out. Prices on that page showed deep strike-through discounts. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

In Sanur I chose Prama Sanur Beach Bali (beachfront, 8.3 from 4,020 reviews, breakfast, $435 for 4 nights). Sumitra Luxury Villas and Resort scored 9.5 at $708 for the same four nights, and Hyatt Regency Bali 9.1 at $1,117. Prama is the value pick; Sumitra is the better-reviewed upgrade. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Transport and travel fatigue

No nonstop exists: the outbound is 22h55 and the return 19h, both with a Taipei connection; on the ground a driver day is about IDR 650,000 and Ubud to Sanur is about 45 minutes.

The China Airlines itinerary leaves SFO at 11:40 PM December 23 and reaches Denpasar at 2:35 PM December 25; the return leaves at 3:45 PM January 5 and lands in San Francisco at 6:45 PM the same day. Because of the date line, December 24 passes entirely in transit. Cheaper 2-stop fares of $4,015 and $4,277 have outbound durations above 24 hours or 25h55, so they break the cap. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/dps/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Sanur is about 45 minutes from Ubud and about 20 km from the airport; ride-hail is IDR 400,000 to 500,000 one way. EasyTripAI reports a 4 hour 12 minute drive from Ubud to Seminyak on December 27, and Travjoy says Sunset Road slows to a crawl on New Year's Eve, so avoid cross-island moves on peak days. https://baligoat.com/ubud-day-trip · https://easytripai.com/blog/bali-december-reality-check · https://travjoy.com/blog/bali-in-december-a-guide-to-the-christmas-and-new-year-rush

Budget and value

About $6,886 in the middle case, $6,280 low and $10,609 high; flights are 67% of the middle case and the main swing.

Flights $4,592 (observed aggregator), hotels $1,055 (observed Booking.com snapshots), meals $525, ground transport $184, activities and mandatory fees $129, reserve $400. Meals, transport and activities are derived from published prices at IDR 17,889 per USD; the reserve is a labeled estimate, not an insurance quote. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/dps/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://unfoldbali.com/cost-of-food-in-bali/ · https://baligoat.com/ubud-day-trip · https://open.er-api.com/v6/latest/USD

Travjoy says hotel rates rise 40 to 80 percent over Christmas and New Year and that villas need 3 to 7 night minimums with long lead times. The Booking.com snapshots carry strike-through list prices two to five times higher than the shown price, so I treat the shown price as a promotional snapshot and the high case as the list price. https://travjoy.com/blog/bali-in-december-a-guide-to-the-christmas-and-new-year-rush · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Evidence observed: 2026-10-11T03:58:00Z

Risks and cancellation

Main risks are flight fare movement before booking, December flooding or road closures, New Year crowding and the thin margin under a firm ceiling; the hotels shown have free cancellation on the rates observed.

Bliss Ubud and Prama Sanur both showed free cancellation on the Booking.com rates captured; conditions can differ by rate and are not guaranteed for December. The airfare has no cancellation terms in the evidence I captured, so treat the fare as non-refundable until the fare rules are read on the airline site. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

China Airlines posted ticketing-handling notices for typhoon and Anak Krakatoa events on its public booking page in September and October 2026, a reminder that Taipei connections can be disrupted in the wet and typhoon season. https://www.china-airlines.com/us/en/booking/book-flights

Alternatives and pushback

Strongest alternatives: a single Sanur base for 11 nights (about $600 more in hotels at Prama, or about $223 less at Prime Plaza) and a December 19 departure ($5,956 flights, about $8,811 all in); neither beats Candidate A on value.

An 11-night Sanur stay priced at $1,655 for Prama, $1,088 for Katala Suites and Villas, $1,669 for The Alantara and $832 for Prime Plaza Hotel Sanur on Booking.com. It removes a hotel move but loses Ubud mornings, which are the main reason to go. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

The December 19 departure on EVA via Taipei is $5,956 for two against $4,592 on December 23, $1,364 more for two extra Bali days, and the all-in estimate reaches about $8,811, above the ceiling. San Jose was also searched: no 1-stop options exist and the cheapest in-cap-free fares have 37 to 50 hour outbounds. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/dps/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/dps/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Provisional Itinerary

Itinerary follows Option 1: Bali, Indonesia.

  1. Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · San Francisco (SFO)

Pack, eat early, check in for the 11:40 PM China Airlines departure to Taipei.

Departure day: the overnight flight leaves SFO at 11:40 PM and no sightseeing fits.

Lodging: No Bali night; overnight flight.

Transfer: Airport transfer from the Bay Area is not priced; depart SFO 11:40 PM.

Weather alternative: Not applicable; departure day.

  2. Day 2 · 2026-12-24 · In transit via Taipei (TPE)

Connect airside at Taipei Taoyuan; the date line means December 24 passes in the air and at the airport.

The date line swallows December 24: the itinerary is a single 22h55 journey landing December 25.

Lodging: No Bali night; in transit.

Transfer: Airside connection at TPE; no Taiwan entry planned.

Weather alternative: Not applicable; in transit.

  3. Day 3 · 2026-12-25 · Denpasar to Ubud

Land 2:35 PM, clear immigration (e-VOA, arrival card, levy voucher), ride to Ubud and check in at Bliss Ubud Spa Resort. Simple dinner and sleep.

Arrival day: the flight lands at 2:35 PM after almost 23 hours of travel; the evening is for check-in and rest.

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 1 of 7 ($620 for 7 nights).

Transfer: Ride-hail or taxi about IDR 450,000 (about $25), 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic.

Weather alternative: If rain or delays hit, stay in; Christmas Day traffic is the main risk.

  4. Day 4 · 2026-12-26 · Ubud

Walk the Campuhan Ridge in the cool morning, then Ubud Palace and Art Market, warung lunch, Monkey Forest in the afternoon.

    Campuhan Ridge Walk

Why it matters: A free, easy paved trail above the river valley outside central Ubud.

Why this visit: It is the cheapest high-value hour in Ubud and an easy first day after a long flight.

Time: 1.5 hours. Best in the cool of the morning; go before 9 AM.

    Cost basis: Free.

    Ubud Palace and Art Market

Why it matters: Free-entry palace and market in the centre of Ubud.

Why this visit: It gives the town centre in one loop and costs nothing; skip the market if you dislike bargaining.

Time: 1 hour. Free entry; bargain with a smile at 20 to 30% counter-offers.

Cost basis: Free entry; purchases not budgeted.

    Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Why it matters: A protected jungle temple complex full of long-tailed macaques.

Why this visit: It is the one wildlife-and-temple stop in town; skip it if monkeys at close range make you uneasy.

Time: 1.5 hours. Hold nothing loose: sunglasses, phones and earrings are targets. Adult entry IDR 130,000 on the July 2026 fee list.

Cost basis: IDR 130,000 per person (about $7.27 each).

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 2 of 7.

Transfer: On foot or short ride-hail within Ubud; not priced beyond the transport reserve.

Weather alternative: If it pours, shift to the Monkey Forest under cover and a long lunch; the ridge walk is a morning-only plan.

  5. Day 5 · 2026-12-27 · Ubud and surroundings (driver day)

Hired driver: Tegallalang terraces at sunrise, Tirta Empul mid-morning, babi guling lunch, Goa Gajah.

    Tegallalang Rice Terrace

Why it matters: Bali's stepped green fields above a valley with cafes hanging over the edge.

Why this visit: It is the classic landscape; December is post-harvest so it is less photogenic, but the valley shape is still worth an early morning.

Time: 1.5 hours. Go at 7 to 8 AM before tour buses; the swing is optional at IDR 150,000 to 300,000 and I would skip it.

Cost basis: IDR 50,000 per person (about $2.80 each).

    Tirta Empul

Why it matters: A holy spring temple; legend says Indra pierced the earth to create the water of immortality.

Why this visit: It is the most important water temple near Ubud and the best window into Balinese ritual.

Time: 1.5 hours. Open 7 AM to 6 PM; the standard ticket is visit-only; sarong provided or rented; bathing in the spring pools needs a separate arrangement.

Cost basis: IDR 75,000 per person (about $4.19 each).

    Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave)

Why it matters: An 11th-century meditation cave carved into rock and guarded by a stone demon mouth.

Why this visit: It is a short, atmospheric stop between the other two sights.

Time: 45 minutes. Entry about IDR 50,000 with sarong included; temple etiquette applies.

Cost basis: IDR 50,000 per person (about $2.80 each).

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 3 of 7.

Transfer: Private driver about IDR 650,000 (about $36) for 10 to 12 hours.

Weather alternative: If the terraces are rained out, swap to Goa Gajah and Tirta Empul and skip the swing.

  6. Day 6 · 2026-12-28 · Ubud

Late start, Tegenungan Waterfall in the afternoon only if rain allows, otherwise cooking-class-free rest day and a spa afternoon at the hotel.

    Tegenungan Waterfall

Why it matters: A powerful waterfall in a jungle gorge about 20 minutes south of Ubud.

Why this visit: It is the easiest waterfall to reach and a cheap half day; the wet season makes it more dramatic and also more dangerous to swim.

Time: 2 hours. Entry IDR 30,000 to 50,000 depending on the list; bring swim gear and check the flow.

Cost basis: IDR 50,000 per person (about $2.80 each), higher figure used.

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 4 of 7.

Transfer: Short ride-hail; Tegenungan is about 20 minutes south of town.

Weather alternative: Waterfalls run powerful and muddy after rain; skip swimming if flows are high.

  7. Day 7 · 2026-12-29 · Ubud and Batubulan

Morning Ibu Oka babi guling at 11:30, afternoon Barong and Kris dance at Batubulan.

    Barong and Kris Dance, Batubulan

Why it matters: A cultural performance listed at Batubulan in Gianyar.

Why this visit: It is the one organized performance on the plan; skip it if you prefer to wander.

Time: 1.5 hours. The fee list shows IDR 150,000 for adults; show times were not retrieved, so confirm them before going.

Cost basis: IDR 150,000 per person (about $8.38 each); show time unverified.

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 5 of 7.

Transfer: Short ride-hail or driver half day within the transport reserve.

Weather alternative: If rain closes the afternoon, move the dance to the next dry slot.

  8. Day 8 · 2026-12-30 · Ubud

Free day: long breakfast, a slow second ridge walk or a warung crawl, spa treatment, book nothing.

    Warung lunch circuit

Why it matters: Ubud's local eating houses serving nasi campur and babi guling at local prices.

Why this visit: It is the cheapest great meal in Ubud; Kai reports about Rp 50,000 a day over a month of warung eating.

Time: 2 hours. Cash only at most; best at midday; expect cold drinks to cost extra in humid weather.

Cost basis: IDR 25,000 to 80,000 per person per meal, within the meals line.

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 6 of 7.

    Transfer: On foot.

Weather alternative: Wet day: stay at the hotel; this is the slack day built in for December rain.

  9. Day 9 · 2026-12-31 · Ubud

New Year's Eve: stay in Ubud, early reservation at a restaurant booked weeks ahead, avoid cross-island traffic.

Lodging: Bliss Ubud Spa Resort, night 7 of 7.

Transfer: None needed; stay on foot or a short ride.

Why this visit: It is the reason for the second base: calmer and clearer water than the west coast.

Time: Most of the day. Check conditions each morning; Travjoy says the east coast stays swimmable while the west turns rough.

    Cost basis: Free.

Lodging: Prama Sanur Beach Bali, night 2 of 4.

Transfer: On foot along the beach path.

Weather alternative: If it rains, use the hotel spa or an indoor lunch.

Slow day: late breakfast, café lunch and an optional spa session.

Lodging: Prama Sanur Beach Bali, night 3 of 4.

What Travelers Say

Reports December rainfall on about 16 of 31 days on the coast and 20 in the highlands, flooding and road closures across South Bali in December 2024 and 2025, and quiet conditions until about the 20th before it gets very busy. This confirms the official rain picture and adds that the risk is a gamble year to year.

Kieren Windsor (Bali Untold), travel blog, updated October 2026 · source

Describes December as monsoon plus peak holiday crowds: post-harvest rice terraces, rain by early morning, and a 4 hour 12 minute Ubud to Seminyak drive on December 27. This contradicts the postcard version of Bali and is why I avoid cross-island moves.

EasyTripAI editor, travel blog, 2026 · source

Says December splits into a quiet first half and a December 23 to January 6 rush, with hotel rates up 40 to 80 percent and NYE tickets selling out 2 to 4 weeks ahead. This complicates the low hotel prices I saw on Booking.com.

Raj Varma (Travjoy), travel blog, 2026 · source

Averaged about Rp 50,000 a day eating only at Ubud warungs for thirty days and warns that the famous babi guling at Ibu Oka declines after about 1 PM. This confirms that local food is cheap and shapes my lunch plan.

Kai (Bali Deeper), travel blog, July 2026 · source

Says Bali in December is a yes early in the month for quiet and a maybe over the Christmas and New Year window, with mornings for outdoor plans and wet afternoons for indoor ones. This reinforces keeping a slack day.

  • No airline-direct total for China Airlines or EVA Air; bag fees unknown.
  • Booking.com prices are promotional snapshots; tax and service charge not itemized; no property-direct total for Dec 25 to Jan 5.
  • India eligibility and the 48-hour advice for the e-VOA were read through visa-guide pages and a minimal official homepage, not the official eligibility page.
  • Chase Travel status of the stays is unverified.
  • Barong dance show times and New Year opening hours for the sights were not retrieved.

Your Action Plan

Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.

  1. High priority: Recheck the airline-direct total for China Airlines and EVA Air, SFO to DPS, December 23 to January 5, two adults.

Why: The $4,592 flight line is an aggregator snapshot, bag fees are unknown, and flights are 67% of the total.

How to check: Open china-airlines.com/us or evaair.com/en-us, set SFO to DPS, round trip, exact dates, 2 adults, USD, read the total and the bag fees without buying.

Decision impact: A direct total near $4,600 keeps the trip Conditional; above about $5,200 breaks the ceiling margin and moves it to Weak fit.

  2. High priority: Read the full price at checkout for Bliss Ubud Spa Resort (Dec 25 to Jan 1) and Prama Sanur Beach Bali (Jan 1 to Jan 5), including tax and service charge.

Why: The results pages show deep strike-through discounts and do not itemize tax; Travjoy says December rates run 40 to 80 percent higher.

How to check: Open Booking.com or the property sites, enter the exact dates and two adults, open the price details, and note the checkout total and cancellation deadline.

Decision impact: If the 11 nights exceed about $2,000, the trip no longer fits the ceiling with the other costs; below $1,100 keeps it as priced.

  3. Medium priority: Confirm the e-VOA requirement and the arrival-card timing on the official Indonesian immigration sites.

Why: The 48-hour advice came through a visa guide citing the official page, and one guide page shows conflicting template text.

How to check: Open evisa.imigrasi.go.id and its eligibility information for Indian citizens, and the All Indonesia arrival-card portal, and note fee, validity and timing.

Decision impact: If India is not eligible or processing is slower, the application date moves earlier; otherwise apply around December 21 at the latest.

  4. Medium priority: Confirm the Taipei connection is a single ticket with an airside, same-airport transfer in both directions.

Why: Taiwan transit rules depend on staying airside and on TPE not TSA; the transit source is a guide summarizing consular guidance.

How to check: Read the fare rules on the airline page and the Taiwan consular transit page; ask the airline about through-checked bags.

Decision impact: A forced Taiwan entry or a separate ticket would add a document question and risk and would move the verdict to Not recommended.

  5. Low priority: Look for both Bliss Ubud and Prama Sanur on the Chase Travel portal.

Why: Chase status could not be verified from a public page and the portal needs your login.

How to check: Sign in to your own Chase Travel account and search the exact dates.

Decision impact: A Chase listing is upside only and never outweighs a clearly better stay.
