Colombia

Bogota then Cartagena is the best Colombia version of the trip but costs about $7,458 for two against a firm USD 7,000 ceiling, and two gating questions (US visa validity above six months and a possible San Salvador transit tariff) are unanswered.

Advisor memo

Colombia works as Bogota then Cartagena, but only if your visa stamps and the San Salvador connection check out

My recommendation

I would go to Colombia as two bases, Bogota then Cartagena, but only if two questions come back clean first. The point estimate is about $7,458 for the two of you, with a plausible range of roughly $6,107 to $10,597. That means the low end fits under your USD 7,000 ceiling and the middle does not. Entry is visa-free for Indian passport holders only if each US visa stamp is valid for more than six months when you land. The flip condition is simple: if either stamp is short, or the San Salvador connection carries a transit fee for you, I would drop this trip.

Why this trip fits the two of you

You asked for food and culture first, beach second, winter scenery and nature after that, and value overall. Colombia serves the first two well. Bogota gives you La Candelaria, Plaza de Bolivar and the Monserrate view, at over 2,500 meters, where December evenings are cool, around 10 C, per the monthly averages. Cartagena gives you the Walled City, Getsemani and a dry, hot week at 30 to 32 C. It trades away winter scenery almost entirely, and value suffers because December 23 to January 5 is the peak of the year for rooms.

How the trip unfolds

Arrival and Bogota (Dec 23 to 27). The flight I would price is Avianca via San Salvador, leaving SFO at 1:15 PM and landing in Bogota about 2 AM on Dec 24. That is why I put the Dec 23 night on the booking. I would stay at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Zona G in Chapinero (8.7 on Booking.com from 961 reviews, $328 for four nights with breakfast). I have not verified its Chase Travel status, so check the Chase portal yourselves.

Christmas Eve is a walk in La Candelaria and an early dinner. Christmas Day is for a long lunch, because I could not verify museum or sight hours on the holiday. Dec 26 is Monserrate. The blogger at She Wanders Abroad found the cable car ran after noon while a funicular ran before, and paid about 23,500 COP round trip, which is about $6. She also says Bogota sits above 2,500 meters, so go slowly the first day.

Cartagena (Dec 27 to Jan 4). A JetSMART flight at 11:00 AM on Dec 27 takes about 1h37 and the pair of you pay about $680 round trip on the Skyscanner snapshot. For the stay I would book Hampton by Hilton in Bocagrande (8.7 from 1,371 reviews, $1,747 for eight nights with breakfast, 150 feet from the beach) if you want a beach and a pool, or Casa Pizarro in Getsemani ($2,387, 8.9 from 860 reviews) if you want atmosphere and can spend more.

The days that matter are the Walled City and Castillo San Felipe on Dec 28, a Rosario Islands boat day on Dec 29 and a quiet New Year's Eve with a reserved dinner. Our Escape Clause writes that the beaches within walking distance are not the Caribbean paradise people imagine, and that the better beaches need a boat. I agree: do not skip the island day. Blue Apple Beach, an island operator, says Christmas through New Year is the best weather of the year and the worst availability, and advises booking boats early.

Departure (Jan 4 to 5). The return flight leaves Bogota at 4:35 AM, so you fly back from Cartagena on Jan 4 at 5:29 PM and sleep one night in Bogota (priced at the Zona G hotel rate; a hotel nearer the airport was not searched). It is a rough exit and I would pay more to avoid it if a better schedule appears.

What it will really cost

Flights are $3,668 for two: Avianca $2,988 plus JetSMART $680, both aggregator snapshots, not airline-direct totals, because the Avianca and United direct pages failed. Hotels are $2,157: Bogota $328, Cartagena $1,747 and one derived airport-night at $82. Meals outside breakfast are $928, ground transport $172 and activities $178, all reference estimates. A 5% reserve of $355 brings it to $7,458.

Low case about $6,107 uses the cheapest Avianca schedule (14h15 outbound, two stops back) and a deal-priced Cartagena hotel; the high case of about $10,597 uses Copa via Panama and a boutique hotel. The swing factor is the flight. Google Flights showed the cheapest Avianca schedule at $2,429, about $290 under the Skyscanner $2,719 for the same carrier.

Against the alternative of flying straight to Cartagena for 13 nights, this is cheaper by about $736 and gives two cities. On experience per dollar it wins, though neither is cheap.

Where this can go wrong

The biggest unknown is the El Salvador connection. Dinero HN, quoting the port authority, reports a $1,000 plus 13% VAT tariff for transit passengers of 57 countries including India, paid through the airline. I could not confirm whether a US-visa holder is exempt. If it applies to both of you on both connections, the cost is roughly $4,520 and the trip is dead; Copa via Panama avoids San Salvador at about $3,797.

Other risks are the 2 AM arrival, the 4:35 AM departure, peak New Year crowds and heat. Allinmap says December crowd levels run high to very high, accommodation costs rise 30 to 70 percent over low season and flights 20 to 50 percent. Who should not choose this: anyone who dislikes humidity, crowds or very early flights.

The best alternative

Fly straight to Cartagena on American via Miami (about $3,485 for two) and stay 13 nights. It removes the domestic flight and the 4:35 AM exit and puts you at a hotel the same evening you land. The cost is about $8,194 against $7,458, and you lose Bogota. I would switch to it only if an airline-direct fare for SFO-CTG comes in below about $3,000 for two.

What to check next

1. Look at each US visa stamp and confirm it has more than six months' validity on Dec 24, 2026. If not, plan on a consular visa instead, because the first Colombian visa must be applied for abroad. 2. Ask the airline, not a blog, whether Indian passport holders with a US visa pay the El Salvador transit tariff on the Avianca routing. If yes, price Copa via Panama instead. 3. Re-quote Avianca and JetSMART on their own sites for two adults on the exact dates, with bags. 4. Re-check the two hotels on their own sites for cancellation terms and total price. 5. Check official hours for Monserrate and the Gold Museum on Dec 24, 25 and Jan 1.

The workings behind the memo

Entry And Visa Lead Time

For an Indian passport holder. US re-entry is user-attested, not verified.

Entry routeother: Indian nationals are exempt from the Colombian visitor visa only if they prove at arrival a US or Schengen visa valid for more than six months (or permanent residence); otherwise a consular visa applies. Whether an online Check-Mig pre-registration is also needed is unresolved: the foreign-ministry PDF says no prior electronic registration is needed, while Migracion Colombia references Check-Mig.
Lead timeUnknown
Last safe application dateNot applicable or unknown
Feasible before departureUnknown
US visa dependencyExemption depends on each traveler's US visa being valid for more than six months at arrival on Dec 24, 2026; the user-attested validity through Jan 5, 2027 does not prove this.
TransitAvianca routings connect in San Salvador, where a USD 1,000 plus 13% VAT airport tariff is reported for Indian transit passengers; exemption for US-visa holders was not established. Copa routings connect in Panama, which was not researched.
FeesNo fee for the visa exemption was found; the consular tourist visa page lists a USD 50 study fee and a visa cost with an India line item that extracted as USD 39 and must be re-read on the live page.
Application steps
  1. Confirm each US visa has more than six months of validity remaining on Dec 24, 2026.
  2. Ask the airline whether Indian passport holders pay the San Salvador transit tariff on the booked routing.
  3. If the stamp is short, apply for a consular tourist visa at a Colombian consulate abroad; the first visa must be processed abroad.
  4. Check Migracion Colombia's site for whether Check-Mig online pre-registration is required, and complete it within its stated window if so.
  5. Carry a passport with two blank pages, proof of onward travel and proof of funds.
Documents to prepare
  • Passport with at least two blank pages
  • US visa valid for more than six months at arrival
  • Onward ticket out of Colombia
  • Proof of sufficient funds
Next actionRead the expiry date on each US visa stamp, and ask the airline about the El Salvador tariff. If a consular visa is needed, no processing time is published, so ask the nearest Colombian consulate.

Options And Value

Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.

Option 1: Colombia

Value rating: Conditional

Two bases suit the food-and-culture priority: Bogota for museums, La Candelaria and a mountain view, then a Caribbean week in Cartagena with dry-season weather. Travel is 9h45 out and 10h20 back on the Avianca schedule priced, inside the 24-hour cap. The point estimate sits above the firm USD 7,000 ceiling and only the low case fits under it.

Compared with: Against Candidate B (fly straight to Cartagena for 13 nights) A costs less and adds a second city, but needs a 4:35 AM departure on Jan 5.

What changes this rating: Moves to Strong fit if an airline-direct total for the 1:15 PM Avianca schedule is at or below about $2,750 for two, the El Salvador tariff does not apply, and the US visa stamps are valid for more than six months at arrival. Moves to Weak fit if the tariff applies or the stamps are too short.

Price confidence: Partly observed

Flights and both hotel stays are aggregator snapshots for the exact dates and two travelers; meals, taxis and activities are reference estimates. None is an airline-direct or hotel-direct total.

Bogota first (altitude, cool evenings, museums) then a week on the Caribbean coast gives two different moods. The cheapest sensible routing, and a 4:35 AM exit is the price.

Early-morning arrival and departure, a connection through an airport that may charge Indian passengers a large tariff, and a New Year peak in Cartagena.

Party cost: USD 7,458.15. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-11T02:05:00Z.

Party cost lineUSDBasisCalculation, assumptions and sources
Flights3,668partly observedPer person: SFO-BOG Avianca via San Salvador $1,494 + JetSMART BOG-CTG return $340 = $1,834. Party: 2 x $1,834 = $3,668 (aggregator party totals $2,988 + $680).

Assumptions: Skyscanner totals include taxes and charges; checked-bag fees are not shown and none was invented. Not an airline-direct total (the direct pages failed). The El Salvador transit tariff reported for Indian passports is NOT included.

Planning range: USD 3,399 to 4,582. Low $3,399 = cheapest Avianca schedule ($2,719; 14h15 out, two stops back) + JetSMART $680. High $4,582 = Copa via Panama $3,797 + Avianca BOG-CTG $785. Separate risk: if the reported $1,000 + 13% VAT San Salvador tariff applies per passenger, a routing with one transit each way could add up to $1,130 x 2 travelers x 2 transits = $4,520; Copa via Panama is the hedge.

Hotels2,157partly observedBogota 4 nights Dec 23-27 at Holiday Inn Express & Suites Zona G $328 (breakfast) + Cartagena 8 nights Dec 27-Jan 4 at Hampton by Hilton $1,747 (breakfast) = $2,075, plus one Bogota night Jan 4 before the 4:35 AM flight: $328 / 4 = $82 (derived from the 4-night rate; Jan 4 was not searched). Total $2,157.

Assumptions: Booking.com rows with taxes and fees included, 2 adults, 1 room. The Dec 23 night is booked because arrival is about 2 AM. A holiday uplift cannot be measured: one date range per city was searched.

Planning range: USD 1,778 to 2,942. Low $1,778 = Bogota $328 + Hotel Rilux Cartagena $1,368 (limited-time deal, 3 left) + $82. High $2,942 = Four Points Tequendama $444 + Casa Pizarro boutique $2,387 + $111 (444/4). Rates are snapshots and moved between the 6-night and 8-night searches.

Meals928estimateMeals outside hotel breakfast: Bogota 16 meals x $14 = $224; Cartagena 32 meals x $22 = $704. Total $928.

Assumptions: Reference ranges: Bogota $4-8 menu del dia, $8-15 lunch, $15-25 dinner; Cartagena Walled City $18-30 per person for a sit-down dinner. $14 and $22 are mid-range blends, not menu quotes. Drinks and tips excluded.

Planning range: USD 608 to 1,520. Low $608 = 16 x $8 + 32 x $15. High $1,520 = 16 x $25 + 32 x $35 (more trendy Walled City dinners). New Year's Eve set menus were not priced.

Ground transport172estimate4 Bogota airport taxis (arrive, return, two domestic legs) x $10 (33,000-40,000 COP at about 3,850 COP per USD, rounded up) = $40; 2 Cartagena airport taxis x $6 (18,000-22,000 COP) = $12; plus 20 local rides x $6 = $120. Total $172.

Assumptions: The $6 local ride is an assumption; no ride-hail fare was sourced. The exchange rate is implied by a blog conversion, not a live rate. A 3 AM airport run on Jan 5 may carry a night surcharge.

Planning range: USD 112 to 292. Low $112 = $52 + 10 rides x $6. High $292 = $52 + 40 rides x $6.

Activities178derivedMonserrate round trip 23,500 COP (about $6, from one blog; a search summary instead quoted 25,000-38,000 COP each way, so this line is likely a floor) x 2 = $12 (Sunday rate lower); Castillo San Felipe 30,000-42,000 COP (about $10 each, midpoint) x 2 = $20; Rosario Islands group day trip $60 each (midpoint of $45-75) + $13 pier/park fees = $73 x 2 = $146. Total $178.

Assumptions: Figures come from a blog and a search summary, not official ticket offices (the Gold Museum and Monserrate official pages were blocked or unavailable). Walking-tour tips, Gold Museum, Zipaquira and street-food tours are not priced.

Planning range: USD 32 to 298. Low $32 = skip the island day. High $298 = premium Rosario tour $120 each + $13 fees ($266) + $12 + $20.

Insurance and contingency355.15estimateReserve = 5% of the other five lines ($7,103.00) = $355.15. It is a planning reserve, not an insurance quote.

Assumptions: Covers unpriced items: a checked-bag fee, tips, museum entries, a taxi surcharge, small currency losses. No travel-insurance premium was sourced.

Planning range: USD 177.87 to 963.4. Endpoints are labeled scenarios (3% of the low-case subtotal, 10% of the high-case subtotal), not evidence-based ranges. A bag fee on a low-cost carrier or a missed connection would land here.

Option 2: Colombia

Value rating: Weak fit

One base removes a flight and the 4:35 AM exit, but 13 nights in a hot, crowded Walled City trade away the museums and cooler mountain evenings that serve the food-and-culture priority. The point estimate is clearly above the USD 7,000 ceiling.

Decision summary

Conditional. Bogota then Cartagena is the best Colombia version of this trip, with a point estimate near $7,458 for two, above the USD 7,000 ceiling, and a low case near $6,107. It is not ready to book.

The best version of Colombia for a food-and-culture trip is two bases: four nights in Bogota and eight in Cartagena. The point estimate is $7,458 for two, and the low-to-high range runs from about $6,107 to $10,597. Only the low case sits under the firm USD 7,000 ceiling. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/bog/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

The verdict stays conditional because two gating facts are unconfirmed: whether both US visa stamps are valid for more than six months at arrival, and whether the San Salvador connection triggers a very large transit fee for Indian passport holders. https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/sites/default/files/FOTOS2024/ENTRY%20TO%20COLOMBIA%20AND%20COURTESY%20VISA%20INFORMATION.pdf · https://dinero.hn/pasajeros-de-57-paises-pagaran-1-000-por-transitar-en-aeropuerto-de-el-salvador/

Entry and transit

Visa-free entry applies to Indian nationals only with a US or Schengen visa valid for more than six months at arrival; otherwise a consular visa is required. The Avianca routings connect in San Salvador.

Colombia's foreign ministry says the visa exemption applies to Indian nationals who prove on arrival a permanent residence permit or a visa valid for more than six months issued by the United States or a Schengen country. Otherwise they must obtain a visa. A user-attested validity "through the return date" does not show that the stamp has more than six months left on Dec 24, 2026. https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/sites/default/files/FOTOS2024/ENTRY%20TO%20COLOMBIA%20AND%20COURTESY%20VISA%20INFORMATION.pdf

The foreign-ministry PDF (written for event participants) says no prior electronic registration is needed, but the Migracion Colombia site mentions an online Check-Mig pre-registration; the two were not reconciled, so confirm it on the immigration authority site before flying. If a consular visa is needed, the official tourist-visa page says the first visa must be processed at a Colombian consulate abroad; no processing time is published there. https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/sites/default/files/FOTOS2024/ENTRY%20TO%20COLOMBIA%20AND%20COURTESY%20VISA%20INFORMATION.pdf · https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/en/tourist-visa

Every Avianca itinerary priced connects through San Salvador. Reports say El Salvador charges a USD 1,000 plus 13% VAT airport tariff to transit passengers of listed nationalities including India, paid through the airline. Whether a US-visa holder is exempt was not established, so a Copa routing through Panama is the hedge. https://dinero.hn/pasajeros-de-57-paises-pagaran-1-000-por-transitar-en-aeropuerto-de-el-salvador/ · https://www.visahacks.in/need-visa/el-salvador · https://www.cepa.gob.sv/tarifa-de-mejoras-aeroportuarias-del-aeropuerto-internacional-de-el-salvador/

Climate and weather

Bogota is cool and showery at altitude; Cartagena is hot, humid and in its dry season. Both statements are seasonal averages, not forecasts.

Bogota sits above 2,500 meters. December averages about 19 C highs and 10 C lows with roughly 16 rain days and about 77 mm of rain, so a light jacket and a waterproof layer are needed on most days. https://www.weathermonth.com/en/bogota-weather-in-december · https://shewandersabroad.com/2-weeks-in-colombia-itinerary/

Cartagena in late December is in the dry season: highs of 30-32 C, lows near 24-25 C, humidity around 80% and little rain. The beaches within walking distance of the Walled City are not the postcard Caribbean; the better beaches are a boat ride away. https://allinmap.app/en/city-guides/visiting-december-cartagena/ · https://www.blueapplebeach.com/blog/cartagena-christmas-new-year · https://www.ourescapeclause.com/2-weeks-in-colombia-itinerary/

Experiences and closures

Bogota earns its time for La Candelaria, Monserrate and food; Cartagena for the walled city, Getsemani, Castillo San Felipe and a day on the water. Christmas Day and New Year's Day closures were not verified on official pages.

La Candelaria is Bogota's smallest and most historic neighborhood, with Plaza de Bolivar, museums and street art. The Monserrate cable car costs about 23,500 COP round trip, less on Sundays; one blogger notes a funicular runs until noon and the cable car after. https://shewandersabroad.com/2-weeks-in-colombia-itinerary/

In Cartagena the Walled City, Getsemani murals, the town walls at sunset and Castillo San Felipe de Barajas are the draws. San Felipe is roughly 30,000-42,000 COP for foreigners and normally open about 7 AM to 6 PM, per a search summary rather than an official page. https://www.ourescapeclause.com/2-weeks-in-colombia-itinerary/ · https://allinmap.app/en/city-guides/visiting-december-cartagena/

Most good beaches need a boat: Rosario Islands group tours run about $45-75 per person plus about $13 pier and park fees. The official Gold Museum page was behind a bot check, so its opening hours around Dec 24-25 and Jan 1 are unverified. https://www.machupicchu.org/rosario-islands-day-trip-from-cartagena-2026-beaches-snorkeling.htm · https://nauty360.com/blog/rosario-islands-colombia-complete-guide · https://www.ourescapeclause.com/2-weeks-in-colombia-itinerary/

Neighborhoods and lodging

Stay in Chapinero or Zona G in Bogota, and Bocagrande for beach access or Getsemani for atmosphere in Cartagena.

Bogota stays are Chapinero or Chico, around $82-111 a night for a 4-star-rated hotel with breakfast on the dates searched. Holiday Inn Express & Suites Zona G is the base-case pick (8.7 on Booking.com, 961 reviews). https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

In Cartagena, Bocagrande is a high-rise beach strip with chain hotels, such as Hampton by Hilton at $1,747 for 8 nights, while Getsemani boutiques such as Casa Pizarro run $2,387. A blog source says many travelers split time between the two. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://shewandersabroad.com/2-weeks-in-colombia-itinerary/

Transport and travel fatigue

Best-priced SFO-BOG routings are 9h45 to 14h15 one way via San Salvador; the schedule with a 2 AM Bogota arrival and a 4:35 AM return is the tiring part.

Avianca via San Salvador is 9h45 outbound and 10h20 back on the priced schedule, within the 24-hour cap. The cheaper 1:30 AM departure is 14h15 out and 13 hours back with two stops. Copa via Panama is 9h56-10h49 out but costs about $3,797 for two. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/bog/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.google.com/travel/flights

Bogota to Cartagena is about 1h37 direct on JetSMART at $680 for the pair round trip, which is why two bases cost little extra in transport. Airport taxis are quoted at roughly $5-10. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/bog/ctg/261227/270104/?currency=USD · https://www.airporttransferportal.com/airport-guides/bog/cost-to-city

Evidence observed: 2026-10-11T02:05:00Z

Budget and value

The point estimate is above the firm ceiling; only the low case passes. The swing factors are the flight (and the possible El Salvador fee) and Cartagena hotel choice.

Flights $3,668 (partly observed), hotels $2,157, meals $928 (estimate), ground transport $172, activities $178 and a 5% reserve make $7,458. The range runs about $6,107 to $10,597. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/bog/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://colombiavibe.com/cost-to-eat-out-in-colombia/

Neither airline-direct nor hotel-direct totals could be obtained, so every dollar is an aggregator snapshot or a reference estimate. Google Flights priced the cheapest Avianca schedule about $290 below the Skyscanner $2,719 for a comparable 1:30 AM Avianca schedule, which shows how wide the spread is. https://www.google.com/travel/flights · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/bog/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Evidence observed: 2026-10-11T02:05:00Z

Risks and cancellation

Main risks are visa validity, the transit tariff, the New Year peak, and non-refundable boat and tour terms.

Christmas through New Year is the peak: rooms go early, restaurants want reservations and island boats are fullest. One island operator refunds 50% of a stay only if cancelled more than 30 days before check-in, so cancellation terms need reading before any tour deposit. https://www.blueapplebeach.com/blog/cartagena-christmas-new-year · https://allinmap.app/en/city-guides/visiting-december-cartagena/

A missed Avianca connection into the 2 AM Bogota arrival is the biggest fatigue risk. A routing that arrives the afternoon before is safer but costs more. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/bog/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Evidence observed: 2026-10-11T02:05:00Z

Alternatives and pushback

The main alternative is flying straight to Cartagena for 13 nights; it avoids the 4:35 AM exit but costs more and offers less variety.

Candidate B (American via Miami, then one Cartagena hotel for 13 nights) comes to about $8,194, mostly because 13 hotel nights and four meals a day on the coast add up. It avoids the domestic flight but gives up Bogota. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/ctg/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Pushback on the whole trip: a hot, crowded Cartagena week at the busiest, most expensive time of year may be poor value compared with a calmer shoulder season, and the date window is fixed by the holiday. https://www.blueapplebeach.com/blog/cartagena-christmas-new-year · https://allinmap.app/en/city-guides/visiting-december-cartagena/

Provisional Itinerary

Itinerary follows Option 1: Colombia.

  1. Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · SFO to Bogota via San Salvador

Depart SFO 1:15 PM; connect in San Salvador; arrive Bogota about 2 AM Dec 24.

Long-haul day: the best-priced routing leaves SFO in the afternoon and lands in the small hours, so the day is only the journey and checking into a room already booked for this night.

Lodging: Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bogota Zona G (night 1, late arrival)

Transfer: Avianca SFO-SAL-BOG, 9h45; taxi to hotel after landing.

Weather alternative: Airport and hotel only; no weather exposure.

  2. Day 2 · 2026-12-24 · Bogota (La Candelaria)

Sleep in, late breakfast, then an easy afternoon walk in La Candelaria and Plaza de Bolivar; early dinner on Christmas Eve.

La Candelaria and Plaza de Bolivar

Why it matters: Bogota's smallest, most historic neighborhood; many of the city's best-known attractions sit here, per one travel blog.

Why this visit: It is the best low-effort introduction to the city after a night flight, and it is walkable.

Time: 2-3 hours. Flat walking at over 2,500 m; go slowly the first day. Christmas Eve hours for shops and museums were not verified.

Cost basis: Free to walk; tips for a guided walking tour are not priced.

Lodging: Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bogota Zona G (night 2)

Transfer: Taxi or ride-hail, about $6 each way (assumed).

Weather alternative: If it rains, swap the walk for a museum or covered market, after checking Christmas Eve hours.

  3. Day 3 · 2026-12-25 · Bogota

Christmas Day: a slow morning, then a taxi to a neighborhood restaurant that is open (reserve ahead).

Christmas Day lunch in Chapinero or Zona G

Why it matters: Dining is a draw of the area where the base hotel sits; closures on Dec 25 are the constraint.

Why this visit: Many sights are shut on public holidays, so the day is built around eating.

Time: 2 hours. Reserve ahead; hours and holiday menus were not verified.

Cost basis: Dinner for two $35-45 mid-range in Bogota (reference estimate).

Lodging: Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bogota Zona G (night 3)

    Transfer: Taxi, about $6.

Weather alternative: Indoor day: plan a long lunch and a museum only if verified open.

  4. Day 4 · 2026-12-26 · Bogota (Monserrate)

Morning ride up Monserrate; late-lunch in Chapinero.

    Monserrate cable car and sanctuary

Why it matters: A mountain above Bogota with a sanctuary and city views; a cable car and funicular run to the top.

Why this visit: Best single panorama of the city and a useful acclimatization view.

Time: 3 hours. Funicular runs until noon and cable car after, per one blog; Saturday hours differ from Sunday.

Cost basis: About 23,500 COP (about $6) round trip each (blog price).

Lodging: Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bogota Zona G (night 4)

Transfer: Taxi to the cable-car station, about $5.

Weather alternative: Skip Monserrate if cloud covers the summit; do the Gold Museum or a museum instead after confirming hours.

  5. Day 5 · 2026-12-27 · Bogota to Cartagena

Late-morning JetSMART flight to Cartagena; check in, evening walk in Getsemani.

    Getsemani evening walk

Why it matters: A mural-lined, lively neighborhood next to the walled city; one blog calls it best for culture and nightlife.

Why this visit: It is the easiest first look at the city and is walkable at night.

Time: 2 hours. Can be noisy at night.

Cost basis: Free; dinner for two $35-60 in the Walled City area (reference).

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 1)

Transfer: Taxi BOG airport; Cartagena airport taxi 18,000-22,000 COP (about $5).

Weather alternative: Indoor dinner if storms; the dry season makes rain unlikely.

  6. Day 6 · 2026-12-28 · Cartagena (Walled City)

Walk the Walled City in the morning, Castillo San Felipe in the afternoon, sunset on the town walls.

    Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

Why it matters: The Spanish colonial fortress above Cartagena; one itinerary writer calls it a must-see.

Why this visit: It anchors the historic story of the city and gives sweeping views.

Time: 2 hours. About 7 AM to 6 PM per a search summary (not an official page); exposed and hot.

Cost basis: About 30,000-42,000 COP (about $10) each (reference).

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 2)

Transfer: Taxi, about $6 each way.

Weather alternative: Hot midday: do the fortress early or late, take long lunch in air conditioning.

  7. Day 7 · 2026-12-29 · Cartagena to Rosario Islands

Full-day boat tour to the Rosario Islands.

    Rosario Islands day trip

Why it matters: Island beaches reached only by boat; many islands are privately owned, so a tour is the usual route.

Why this visit: The beaches walkable from the city are not the postcard Caribbean; the islands are the better beach day.

Time: 8 hours. Book ahead in the Christmas peak; boats are fullest at this time of year.

Cost basis: About $60 each plus $13 fees (reference).

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 3)

Transfer: Tour pickup; pier fees of about $13 each paid separately.

Weather alternative: If the sea is rough and boats do not run, switch to the pool or a cooking class.

  8. Day 8 · 2026-12-30 · Cartagena

Slow morning at the hotel; late-afternoon street-food and Getsemani walk.

Street food in the old town

Why it matters: Street food is a defining local pleasure; one blog suggests a guided street-food tour as an introduction.

Why this visit: Serves the food-and-culture priority and is cheap.

Time: 2 hours. Evenings are busy at the New Year peak.

Cost basis: About $3-15 per meal (reference).

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 4)

    Transfer: Walk or short taxi.

Weather alternative: Indoor restaurant if rain.

  9. Day 9 · 2026-12-31 · Cartagena

New Year's Eve: a quiet day, early reservation for a set-menu dinner, fireworks and music.

New Year's Eve in the old town

Why it matters: Streets are decorated and hotels and restaurants offer special menus.

Why this visit: The one night that makes this date window different.

Time: 4 hours. Restaurants want reservations; crowds are very high.

Cost basis: Set menus not priced; budget $80-120 for two in the Walled City (reference).

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 5)

Transfer: Walk or taxi; expect heavy traffic.

Weather alternative: Stay in the hotel rooftop pool area if it is crowded.

  10. Day 10 · 2027-01-01 · Cartagena

Recovery day: pool, beach strip and a late lunch.

    Bocagrande beach and hotel pool

Why it matters: A high-rise beach strip near the hotel; one blog calls the area modern and beach-oriented.

Why this visit: A rest day after New Year's Eve.

Time: 4 hours. Beaches near the city are good but not spectacular.

    Cost basis: Free.

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 6)

    Transfer: Walk.

Weather alternative: Pool or hotel gym.

  11. Day 11 · 2027-01-02 · Cartagena

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 7)

    Transfer: Tour pickup if booked.

Why this visit: Closes the Caribbean week with a proper meal.

Time: 2 hours. Reserve a table.

Cost basis: $35-60 for two (reference).

Lodging: Hampton by Hilton Cartagena (night 8)

    Transfer: Walk.

    Weather alternative: Indoor shopping.

  13. Day 13 · 2027-01-04 · Cartagena to Bogota

Afternoon JetSMART flight (5:29 PM) to Bogota; sleep in Bogota.

Travel day: the last domestic flight lands at 7:05 PM so the travelers are positioned for a 4:35 AM international departure.

Open Flags

  • US visa stamp validity above six months at arrival is not established.
  • Whether the San Salvador transit tariff applies to US-visa holders is unconfirmed.
  • No airline-direct or hotel-direct totals.
  • Dec 24-25 and Jan 1 hours for sights are unverified.
  • Panama connection rules were not researched.

Your Action Plan

Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.

  1. High priority: Confirm each US visa stamp has more than six months of validity on Dec 24, 2026.

Why: The visa exemption depends on it; a short stamp means a consular visa.

How to check: Read the expiry date on each physical stamp and compare with the six-month rule on the Colombian foreign ministry PDF.

Decision impact: If valid, entry is visa-free and the trip proceeds; if not, add consular-visa time and cost or drop Colombia.

  2. High priority: Ask Avianca whether Indian passport holders pay the San Salvador transit tariff.

Why: A reported USD 1,000 plus 13% VAT per transit could add about $4,520.

How to check: Contact Avianca support or the airline booking flow before buying; also read the CEPA page.

Decision impact: If it applies, switch to Copa via Panama (about $3,797) and re-check the total; if not, keep Avianca.

  3. Medium priority: Re-quote airline-direct for two adults with bags on Avianca and JetSMART.

Why: Aggregator totals for comparable Avianca schedules differed by about $290 and no direct total was obtained.

How to check: Use the airline booking forms for the exact dates and read back travelers and bags.

Decision impact: Below about $2,750 for the long-haul pair strengthens the value rating; above $3,200 weakens it.

  4. Medium priority: Re-check the two hotel stays on the hotels' own sites.

Why: Booking.com deal prices can change and direct pages failed.

How to check: Open the property booking page with the exact dates and read the total and cancellation terms.

Decision impact: A cancellation deadline before your decision date or a higher total moves the stay or dates.

  5. Low priority: Confirm Monserrate and Gold Museum hours for Dec 24-25 and Jan 1.

Why: Official pages were not reachable.

How to check: Check the Monserrate sanctuary and Banco de la Republica sites on the day you plan to visit.

Decision impact: If closed, move the visit to Dec 26 or swap it for a restaurant day.

Limitations And Freshness

Research expires after 30 days; price snapshots become historical after 24 hours. Always recheck current availability. Failed or incomplete checks are not confirmed facts.

  • Actual researcher model identity is unverified; configured model is not runtime proof.
  • Regular browser canvas used; cookie and login isolation are unknown.
  • No airline-direct or hotel-direct total was obtained; all flight and hotel figures are aggregator snapshots.
  • The Dec 23 night is booked because arrival is about 2 AM.
  • Only one price date range was searched per city, so holiday uplift is not measured.
