Costa Rica

A Liberia loop (La Fortuna then Playas del Coco) is the best version of Costa Rica for this window: about $6,756 for two in the middle case under the firm $7,000 ceiling, avoiding a San Salvador transit tariff risk, with entry conditional on both travelers' US visa stamps qualifying.

FreshnessHistorical; refresh needed
RecommendationConditional: Nature, beach and value all land: volcano and hot-spring days in La Fortuna, a rainforest river and canopy day, then Pacific beaches in the driest province, for about $6,756 against a firm $7,000 ceiling. Food is the weakest preference (soda casados and harbour seafood, not a food-led trip), and the Coco beach itself is plain. Fatigue is moderate: 10h29 out and 10h17 back, a night departure, then a 3h shuttle on arrival and a 3.5-4.5h shuttle on Dec 28.
Research confidenceModerate: Hotels are exact-date browser reads from today and entry rules come from an official embassy page and a government advisory, but flights are an aggregator quote (the direct recheck was blocked), the entry sources conflict, and several transport and activity prices are derived from guides.
Itinerary confidenceModerate: Every non-travel day names sourced places with hours and prices where published and a wet-weather fallback, and the 14 days reconcile to the cost lines; Guanacaste is thinner than La Fortuna (several beach days, optional Catalinas, Rincón hours unconfirmed).
Price evidencePartly observed: Hotels are exact-date, exact-party Booking.com totals read today; flights are an exact-date Skyscanner quote (not an airline-direct total); meals, local transport and activities are derived from published prices with explicit ranges; the contingency is a reserve.

Advisor memo

Costa Rica as a Liberia loop costs about $6,756 for two, under your ceiling, if your US visa stamps count for entry

My recommendation

I would take Costa Rica as a Liberia loop: fly San Francisco to Liberia on American via Dallas, spend five nights around La Fortuna for the volcano, the hot springs and the rainforest, then eight nights on the Guanacaste coast at Playas del Coco, and fly home from the same airport on Jan 5. Plan on about $6,756 for the two of you in the middle case, with a realistic range of roughly $5,000 to $8,900 depending on airfare after bag fees, hotel tax and how many paid extras you add. That is $244 under your firm $7,000 ceiling and $756 over the $6,000 target in the trip settings.

Entry is the one-line verdict you need first, and it is unresolved: Indian passports are in Costa Rica's consular-visa group, and the only way around a visa is a qualifying multiple-entry US visa. The Costa Rican embassy page says any multiple-entry US visa category counts with one day of validity left; the Indian embassy's advisory says only B1/B2, D or C1/D with six months left, and an H-1B is neither B1/B2 nor D. Your stamps are user-attested as valid through Jan 5, which proves neither reading, so a written answer from a Costa Rican consulate is required before any purchase.

What would flip my recommendation is the stamps. If the Costa Rican consulate says an H-1B stamp does not count, or one stamp expires before about June 23, 2027, this becomes a consular-visa trip with an unpublished timeline and I would pause it.

Why this trip fits the two of you

Your list is beach, food and culture, winter scenery, nature and value. This route serves nature and beach best: volcano and rainforest days in the first half, then the driest, sunniest, calmest-sea coast in Costa Rica in the second. It serves value well because both hotel stays I found are cheap for the holiday week. It trades away winter scenery entirely, which no tropical trip gives you, and it gives you less food and culture than Mexico City, Lisbon or Morocco would, because the food here is excellent but humble: casados at family sodas, fresh fish at a harbour.

The window matters. Dec 23 to Jan 5 is Costa Rica's busiest stretch. A Costa Rica Day Trip guide puts La Fortuna rooms at $200 to $280 a night over Christmas against $130 to $180 in early December, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica says peak crowds run Dec 20 to Jan 5 while most businesses stay open. The rates I saw are below those benchmarks but flagged "1 left", so the window shapes the risk more than the price.

How the trip unfolds

Arrival (Dec 23). The flight leaves San Francisco at 12:31 AM, so you are at the airport the night of Dec 22. After Dallas you land in Liberia at 1:00 PM and take a private minibus for about 3.5 hours to La Fortuna ($300; the shared shuttles listed run at 09:20 and 1:00 PM, which you cannot catch). Both flight legs are under 11 hours, well inside your 24-hour cap.

La Fortuna, five nights at Arenal Rústic Lodge. I would book the one-bedroom chalet with breakfast at $575 for the five nights, observed for the exact dates; Casa Macaw at $316 (9.0 from 271 reviews, free cancellation, no breakfast) is the cheaper fallback and Cabañas Sueños del Arenal at $456 the other. Christmas Eve is the waterfall in the afternoon, about 500 steps down and back up, and a soda dinner next to the park; an independent traveler on Nomadic Backpacker warns that the steps and the heat are no joke and the current is very strong. Christmas Day is the volcano. Arenal Volcano National Park opens at 8:00 AM every day including holidays, and I would walk the Las Coladas trail to the 1992 lava flows first, then Los Miradores on the lake side after the clouds come in. Dec 26 is the Mistico hanging bridges in the morning and the Ecotermales night pass at 7:00 PM, which Two Weeks in Costa Rica says sells out in December and should be booked at least two weeks ahead. Dec 27 is the Peñas Blancas safari float and the sodas. I left Río Celeste out on purpose: a local operator warns it turns brown for about 24 hours after heavy rain and has a 2:00 PM entry cutoff, and it is the swap for a rainy day, at $185 for a private shuttle plus $12 plus tax admission.

Guanacaste, eight nights at Hotel M&M Beach House in Playas del Coco. On Dec 28 a shared shuttle takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours to the coast. The room is beachfront, $800 for eight nights, with free cancellation. I will be honest about Coco: a beach guide on Costa Rica Spirit calls the town beach one of the country's most overrated and says the value is access, with the harbour, the dive shops and a road of about 35 minutes to the airport, per that one guide. That is why the plan uses Coco as a base for the better places: Playa Ocotal for snorkelling and Playa Hermosa for a cleaner bay, a day at Rincón de la Vieja (Las Pailas and the La Cangreja waterfall, $24.95 each), a sunset sail and snorkel from the harbour on New Year's Eve for about $95 each, and a New Year's Eve dinner with fireworks on the beach. If you want more beach variety, swap a spare day for Conchal and Flamingo, the white-sand beaches the same guide recommends.

Departure (Jan 5). A taxi to Liberia of about 35 minutes (one beach guide), a 2:00 PM flight via Dallas and a 10:17 PM landing in San Francisco, which means you are home the same day rather than at 12:37 AM on Jan 6.

None of the four stays I list appears on Chase's public Costa Rica Edit pages (I checked Chase's guide and a third-party list of all ten Edit properties today); the Chase Travel portal needs your login, so look there, but I would not let a card match outrank a room this good for the price.

What it will really cost

The middle case is $6,755.98. Flights $2,583.00: two travelers at $1,291.50, American via Dallas, read on Skyscanner for the exact dates, taxes included but no bag fee. Hotels $1,375.00: $575 plus $800, both exact-date Booking.com totals. Meals $928.00: eight breakfasts at $8, fourteen lunches at $10 and thirteen dinners at $20 per person, from published price ranges. Local transport $935.00: a private LIR minibus ($300), a shared shuttle ($190), airport taxi, La Fortuna taxis and a day driver to Rincón de la Vieja. Activities $634.98: waterfall $40, Arenal $33.90, Ecotermales $97.18, Mistico $56, safari float $168, sunset sail $190 and Rincón $49.90. A $300 reserve covers the first-bag fee and surprises; it is a reserve, not an insurance premium.

The swing factors are the airfare after the bag fee and whether Booking.com totals already include the 13 percent sales tax. The low case of about $5,004 uses the cheaper return that lands at 12:37 AM, cheaper rooms and no paid extras. The high case of about $8,876 stacks every upgrade and is not the plan. On value, the Liberia loop costs about $103 more than the Avianca route as priced and about $423 more if both travel carry-on only (Avianca's total includes a checked bag each way, about $320; American's quote excludes bags, so its bag fee widens the gap). It wins on risk, not price: it carries no known single-point price risk.

Where this can go wrong

The entry stamps are the biggest risk, as above. Next is the American fare: the airline's own site blocked me with a bot challenge, so the $2,583 is an aggregator quote until you recheck it on aa.com in a normal browser and see the first-bag fee. Hotel inventory is thin: both rooms showed "We have 1 left" and the platform said 80 to 95 percent of rated places were unavailable for these dates. The 12:31 AM departure is a real fatigue cost: about 17 hours door to door on arrival day, including the 3.5-hour drive. Rain is a small risk in La Fortuna (about 220 mm in December) and almost nothing in Guanacaste, but afternoon winds can cancel boats.

This trip is wrong for someone who wants a food- or culture-led holiday, who dislikes long shuttles on the second day, or who wants a postcard beach: Coco is a working harbour town, and the lovely beaches are a drive away.

The best alternative

The strongest competitor is the San José, La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio route on Avianca. Avianca's own checkout showed $2,377.50 for two with checked bags on the 13:15 Dec 23 and 15:10 Jan 5 flights through San Salvador, and with Vista del Pacifico at $969 in Manuel Antonio the total is $6,653, $103 less than the Liberia loop as priced (about $423 less if both travel carry-on only). It looks better on paper because Manuel Antonio has the more famous wildlife. I rejected it for three reasons. First, El Salvador's airport authority publishes a US$1,000 plus VAT per-passenger tariff for listed transit nationalities billed to airlines; a third-party guide says India is on the list and the official list was not readable, so the exposure is up to about $2,260 for two and would push the total to about $8,913. Second, Manuel Antonio National Park is closed every Tuesday, sells timed tickets online only and sells out three to four weeks ahead in December, and Dec 29 and Jan 5 are Tuesdays. Third, the shuttle from La Fortuna takes 4h43 to 7 hours.

The result that would make me switch is a written confirmation from Avianca that no El Salvador transit charge is billed to an Indian passport on that routing; then it becomes a close, fair call, and the extra Manuel Antonio wildlife could win it.

What to check next

1. US visa stamps. Photograph each stamp: type, "Entries" and expiry. Multiple entry and an expiry after about June 23, 2027 meets the validity part of both readings; ask the Costa Rican consulate to confirm in writing that an H-1B stamp counts, because the Indian advisory lists only B1/B2, D and C1/D. A no changes this to a consular-visa trip with no published timeline. 2. American fare. On aa.com search SFO to LIR, Dec 23 to Jan 5, two adults, and compare it to $2,583 including the first checked bag. If it is $3,000 or more, rerun the comparison. 3. The two hotel rooms. The La Fortuna chalet and the Coco room each had one unit left at the quoted price; check the tax line on the property pages and whether the Coco room includes breakfast. 4. Ecotermales and Mistico. Reserve the night pass and the timed bridge tickets as soon as the dates are fixed; if the night pass is sold out, the Tabacón alternative is about $124 to $180 each. 5. Rincón de la Vieja. Get a driver quote and the park's closing time; if the driver is above $300, drop the day and spend it at Playa Hermosa. 6. Chase Travel portal. Log in yourself and look up Arenal Rústic Lodge and Hotel M&M Beach House; a match is upside only.

The workings behind the memo

Entry And Visa Lead Time

For an Indian passport holder. US re-entry is user-attested, not verified.

Entry routeconsular-visa: Indian passport holders are in Costa Rica's consular-visa group (a visa is required) unless a qualifying multiple-entry US visa is accepted as a substitute; no consular processing time, fee or last safe application date was published on the pages read (keyword-filtered Chase page extract and third-party Edit list, read 2026-10-14), so the lead time and last safe date are unknown, not zero. The Costa Rican embassy page says any multiple-entry US visa category (plus type D and C1/D; C1, C2 and C3 transit visas are not accepted) with at least one calendar day of validity from the entry date; the Indian embassy advisory (updated Oct 7, 2026) says B1/B2, D or C1/D with at least six months of validity.
Lead timeUnknown
Last safe application dateNot applicable or unknown
Feasible before departureUnknown
US visa dependencyEntry to Costa Rica depends on the US visa stamp being a qualifying multiple-entry visa: both travelers' stamps must be checked for type (H-1B per the user, not recorded in the decision profile), the "Entries" field and expiry against the stricter six-month reading (on or after about June 23, 2027). US re-entry on Jan 5 is user-attested (valid stamps through the return date) and not independently verified.
TransitPreferred routing connects in Dallas-Fort Worth on American Airlines, so no third-country transit visa applies; the US arrival is covered by the user-attested US status. The cheaper Avianca routing connects in San Salvador, where CEPA's notice sets a US$1,000 + VAT per-passenger tariff billed to airlines for listed transit nationalities; whether India is listed is unresolved (third-party guides conflict and the official list was not readable).
FeesNo visa fee if the US-visa substitute is accepted. A consular visa fee and processing time were not published on any page I could read. The $1,000 + VAT per-passenger San Salvador tariff, if billed, would be about $2,260 for two and is not in the middle-case cost.
Where to applyNothing to file if both US stamps qualify. If either does not, apply through the consulate of Costa Rica that serves California (contact listed on the Costa Rican embassy visas page, https://www.embajadadecostarica.org/visas, and the Costa Rica consular network) before booking non-refundable travel.
Application steps
  1. Photograph the visa page and US stamp in each passport: visa type, "Entries" (must be multiple) and expiry date.
  2. Compare the expiry with the stricter reading: at least six months after Dec 23, 2026, meaning on or after about June 23, 2027; the embassy text says one calendar day is enough.
  3. Email the Costa Rican consulate or embassy that serves California to confirm in writing that an H-1B stamp counts as the substitute visa.
  4. If either stamp does not qualify, ask the same office for the consular-visa checklist, fee and timeline; none was published on the pages I could read.
  5. Carry the Jan 5 return ticket (LIR to SFO) and lodging confirmations: Costa Rica asks to see proof of return or onward travel at the border.
Documents to prepare
  • Both passports, valid for the whole stay (check the six-month rule against the Jan 5 return).
  • Original US visa stamps (type, multiple entries, expiry) as the Costa Rican visa substitute.
  • Return flight itinerary LIR to SFO on Jan 5 as proof of onward travel.
  • Lodging confirmations for La Fortuna and Playas del Coco, and a note of the traveler's funds if asked at the border.
Next actionLead time and last safe application date are unresolved, and booking recommendations stay blocked until the consulate answers. (Assumption, not a fact: if a consular visa took four to six weeks, an application for a Dec 23 departure would need to start by about mid-November.) No consular processing time is published on the pages read, so lead time and last safe date are unknown. Photograph both US visa stamps (type, Entries, expiry) and email the Costa Rican consulate serving California to confirm in writing that an H-1B stamp valid beyond about June 23, 2027 qualifies; if not, ask for the consular-visa checklist and timeline, which are not published on the pages read.

Options And Value

Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.

Option 1: Costa Rica

Value rating: Conditional

Nature, beach and value all land: volcano and hot-spring days in La Fortuna, a rainforest river and canopy day, then Pacific beaches in the driest province, for about $6,756 against a firm $7,000 ceiling.

Compared with: Against the SJO / Avianca / Manuel Antonio route (candidate 2): $6,756 here versus $6,653 there as priced, so the Liberia loop costs about $103 more, and about $423 more on a carry-on-only basis ($6,333 for Avianca Light fares; American's aggregator price excludes bags too, so any American bag fee widens the gap). The loop is preferred on risk, not price: the Avianca routing carries an unresolved San Salvador transit tariff of up to about $2,260. A Dec 19 start was priced only for SJO (about $912 more airfare for two on Skyscanner, $456 pp, plus about $400-$500 of extra hotel nights at the observed rates); no Dec 19 LIR fare was priced.

What changes this rating: Moves to Strong fit if the Costa Rican consulate accepts both US visa stamps, aa.com shows $2,583 or less with the first bag, and the two one-left rooms are still bookable at those prices; drops to Weak fit if the stamps do not qualify or the American fare plus bags exceeds about $3,000.

Price confidence: Partly observed

Hotels are exact-date, exact-party Booking.com totals read today; flights are an exact-date Skyscanner quote (not an airline-direct total); meals, local transport and activities are derived from published prices with explicit ranges; the contingency is a reserve.

A fly-in/fly-out Liberia loop: five nights of volcano, hot-spring and rainforest days around La Fortuna, then the driest, sunniest beach coast in the country, with the airport about 35 minutes (one beach guide) from the bed on the last night. It avoids San Salvador, where an Indian-passport transit tariff may apply, and it comes in at $6,756 in the middle case, $244 under the firm ceiling and about $103 above the Avianca route as priced.

Departure is 12:31 AM on Dec 23 (the night of Dec 22). Two hotel rooms are one-left inventory. Coco is a working harbour town with a grey-brown beach, not a postcard beach; Rincón de la Vieja and the sunset sail are the paid extras. Up to about $580 of the middle case is unconfirmed: about $400 of airfare tail (first bags and a fare move) and about $180 of hotel sales tax if the Booking.com totals exclude it; the $300 reserve covers part of this.

Party cost: USD 6,755.98. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T11:21:00Z.

2026-12-23 to 2027-01-05

Party cost lineUSDBasisCalculation, assumptions and sources
Flights2,583partly observedTwo travelers x $1,291.50 = $2,583.00 for American Airlines SFO-DFW-LIR, depart SFO 12:31 AM Wed Dec 23 (arrive LIR 1:00 PM, 10h29) and return LIR 2:00 PM Tue Jan 5 via DFW (arrive SFO 10:17 PM, 10h17). Skyscanner rendered "$1,292 per passenger, total $2,583" (per-person figure rounded; $2,583 / 2 = $1,291.50) for exactly these dates, 2 adults, economy, USD, taxes included.

Assumptions: Aggregator quote (price-ladder rung 2), read 2026-10-14 about 10:33Z. The airline-direct recheck was blocked by an aa.com bot challenge (not bypassed); United direct showed $879 per person one-way on a Dec 24 departure only. Baggage fees are not in the Skyscanner list price: the first checked bag is not priced here and sits inside the contingency reserve and the high case. Chosen over the $2,453 variant (12:37 AM Jan 6 arrival) so the Jan 5 return lands the same day.

Planning range: USD 2,453 to 2,983. Low $2,453 is the same outbound with the 3:15 PM return that lands at 12:37 AM on Jan 6; high $2,983 adds $400 for four first-bag fees and a fare move before booking (assumption, not a quote: check the bag fee on aa.com). Cheaper sensible alternatives do not exist: Skyscanner showed no nonstop and the self-transfer Frontier/jetBlue rows ($2,207-$2,503) are excluded.

Hotels1,375partly observedArenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna, 5 nights Dec 23-28, one-bedroom chalet with breakfast: $575 (Booking.com stay total, 2 adults). Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco, 8 nights Dec 28-Jan 5, beachfront double room: $800. Total $575 + $800 = $1,375.00 for 13 nights.

Assumptions: Booking.com rendered results for the exact dates and party (rung 2); the same Arenal property read $576 for Dec 24-29 the same morning. Taxes and the 13 percent sales tax are shown as included only on some Booking.com cards, so the high case adds 13 percent. Both rooms carried "We have 1 left" flags. No property-owned booking page was verified; only off-peak third-party snippets were found (hotel-direct attempt documented). Breakfast is included at Arenal Rústic Lodge only.

Planning range: USD 768 to 1,710. Low $768 swaps to Casa Macaw ($316) and Casitas de la Paz ($452); high $1,710 is Anika Boutique Suites ($938) plus Arenal Rústic Lodge ($575) = $1,513, plus 13 percent in case the displayed totals exclude sales tax (1,513 x 1.13 = 1,709.69, rounded to $1,710).

Meals928derivedBreakfast 8 mornings (Dec 29-Jan 5, not included at the beach hotel) x 2 people x $8 = $128; lunch 14 x 2 x $10 = $280; dinner 13 x 2 x $20 = $520; total $928.00. Breakfast on Dec 24-28 is included at Arenal Rústic Lodge.

Assumptions: Published ranges: casado $5-10 at a soda and $12-25 in a tourist zone, dinner $8-15 at a soda and $18-35 at a tourist restaurant, breakfast $3-6 at a soda and $8-15 at a restaurant (visitcostarica.es, USD, 1 USD about 500 CRC); La Fortuna sodas at $5-7 per plate (Can't Wait Travel). The $10 lunch / $20 dinner / $8 breakfast per person sits between the soda and tourist-restaurant ends. The guides do not say whether listed menu prices include sales tax and service charge.

Planning range: USD 544 to 1,416. Low $544 is soda-level eating ($4 breakfast, $6 lunch, $12 dinner per person); high $1,416 is tourist-restaurant pricing ($12 / $14 / $32) which also covers a New Year's Eve dinner and a possible tax and service add-on.

Ground transport935estimateLIR to La Fortuna private minibus $300 (3.5 hours; the listed shared departures are 09:20 and 1:00 PM, neither catchable after a 1:00 PM landing); La Fortuna to Playas del Coco shared shuttle 2 x $95 = $190; Coco to LIR taxi $20 per vehicle; La Fortuna local taxis and shuttle: waterfall round trip $25 + Arenal park and hot-spring evening rides 4 x $30 = $120 + Mistico shuttle 2 x 2 x $8 = $32 = $177; Coco-area taxis 4 x $12 (my estimate) = $48 plus a one-day driver to Rincón de la Vieja $200 (my estimate, no quote) = $248. Total 300 + 190 + 20 + 177 + 248 = $935.00.

Assumptions: Published quotes: $300 private minibus (Tropical Tours), $95 per person shared La Fortuna to Coco, $15-20 per vehicle for LIR to Coco (one beach guide). The $30 taxi ride is a proxy from the $25-35 taxi to Mistico; the $12 Coco taxi and the $200 Rincón driver day are my own estimates because no quote was retrievable.

Planning range: USD 720 to 1,167. Low $720 drops the Rincón driver day (-$200) and takes Uber at $4-6 each way to the waterfall (-$15); high $1,167 = $935 + $50 (a $250 driver day) + $32 (Coco taxis at $20) + $150 (one more driver day).

Activities634.98derivedLa Fortuna Waterfall 2 x $20 = $40.00; Arenal Volcano park 2 x ($15 + 13% tax = $16.95) = $33.90; Ecotermales 2 x ($43 + 13% = $48.59) = $97.18; Mistico Hanging Bridges 2 x $28 = $56.00; Peñas Blancas safari float 2 x $84 = $168.00; Playas del Coco sunset sail and snorkel 2 x $95 = $190.00; Rincón de la Vieja Las Pailas admission 2 x $24.95 = $49.90. Total $634.98.

Assumptions: Operator and guide pages read 2026-10-14; the 13 percent tax is added where the page says "plus tax". The sunset sail is a "from $95" price in a beach guide, not a dated quote. Rincón admission is a ticket-agent price; no official park fee page could be read (the SINAC page returned a certificate error).

Planning range: USD 369.08 to 1,000. Low $369.08 drops the sail ($190) and Rincón ($49.90) and books the $71 safari float; high $1,000 swaps Ecotermales for Tabacón at about $180 each and adds guides.

Insurance and contingency300estimateFlat reserve of $300.00 (about 4.6 percent of the other five lines). This is a reserve, not an insurance quote.

Assumptions: Covers first-bag fees on the American fare, a rate move at booking, price differences between Booking.com totals and property checkout (tax, resort fee) and small unplanned costs. No insurance premium was priced.

Planning range: USD 150 to 600. Low $150 assumes no bag fee and exact Booking.com totals; high $600 covers four checked bags at $60, a $150 fare move and a late-booking hotel premium.

Option 2: Costa Rica

Value rating: Weak fit

Nature and beach are strong (Arenal, Manuel Antonio wildlife) and the observed airline-direct fare is low, but the 4h43-7h shuttle on Dec 29, a Tuesday park closure, timed park tickets that sell out three to four weeks ahead in December, and a possible $2,260 transit pass-through make the high case about $8,913, over the firm ceiling.

Compared with: Versus the Liberia loop (candidate 1): $103 less as priced (about $423 less carry-on only) and a much bigger tail risk; the extra Manuel Antonio wildlife is real but not worth an unresolved four-figure risk.

What changes this rating: Rises to Conditional if Avianca confirms in writing that no El Salvador transit charge is billed to an Indian passport on SFO-SAL-SJO; falls to Not recommended if the charge is confirmed.

Price confidence: Partly observed

Flights are an airline-direct total read today; hotels are Booking.com totals for exact dates except one derived night; everything else is derived or a reserve; the El Salvador charge is not priced.

The classic San José, La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio route with the cheapest Classic (checked-bag) airfare I could observe on the airline's own site, a wildlife-and-beach second half in Manuel Antonio, and an airport-area night at each end.

The routing goes through San Salvador, where CEPA publishes a US$1,000 + VAT per-passenger tariff for listed transit nationalities that a third-party guide says includes India; if it is passed to the traveler it adds about $2,260 and the total becomes about $8,913. Manuel Antonio National Park is closed Tuesdays and sells out three to four weeks ahead. The La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio shuttle takes 4h43 to 7h on Dec 29.

Party cost: USD 6,652.74. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T11:21:00Z.

Party cost lineUSDBasisCalculation, assumptions and sources
Flights2,377.5observedTwo travelers x $1,188.75 = $2,377.50: Avianca Classic (carry-on plus one 23 kg checked bag) SFO 13:15 Wed Dec 23 to SJO 23:40 via San Salvador ($527.08 per person) and SJO 15:10 Tue Jan 5 to SFO 22:55 ($661.67 per person). Avianca's Trip summary read "All taxes are included in the total price. Your total booking: USD 2.377,50".

Assumptions: Airline-direct total, exact dates, 2 adults, USD, read 2026-10-14 about 10:45Z; I stopped before passenger details. This is the Classic fare (carry-on plus one 23 kg checked bag each way, about $320 of the total for four bags); the Light fares are $447.08 + $581.67 = $2,057.50 for two without checked bags, and a 01:30 AM Dec 23 outbound is $408.08 per person. It excludes any El Salvador airport transit charge for Indian passports. CEPA (the El Salvador airport authority) publishes a US$1,000 + VAT per-passenger tariff billed to airlines for listed transit nationalities, and a third-party guide says India is listed (the official list was not readable), so a pass-through of up to about $2,260 for two is a live risk that Avianca's checkout did not show.

Hotels1,739partly observedAlajuela airport-area hotel Dec 23 (Hotel SJO Airport Cars4Rent Edward y Familia Inn) $97; Arenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna, Dec 24-29 (5 nights) $576; Vista del Pacifico Boutique Hotel, Manuel Antonio, Dec 29-Jan 4 (6 nights) $969; second airport-area night Jan 4 derived at $97. Total 97 + 576 + 969 + 97 = $1,739.00.

Assumptions: Booking.com stay totals for 2 adults (rung 2); Jan 4 was blocked by an AWS WAF challenge and is derived from the Dec 23 airport list. Bongo - Adults Only (8.7, breakfast, free cancellation) is the upgrade at $1,350 for the same six nights (+$381).

Planning range: USD 1,600 to 2,396. Low $1,600 uses $63 airport nights ($63 is the cheapest rated airport-area card; the observed span is $63-$185), Cabañas Sueños at $505 and Vista del Pacifico; high $2,396 is the Bongo upgrade to a $2,120 total stay plus 13 percent in case displayed totals exclude sales tax.

Meals772derivedBreakfast 2 days x 2 x $8 = $32 (Dec 24 after the airport hotel and Jan 5; breakfast is stated as included on the Booking.com cards for Arenal Rústic Lodge and Vista del Pacifico; the two airport-hotel mornings are bought separately); lunch 13 x 2 x $10 = $260; dinner 12 x 2 x $20 = $480; total $772.00.

Assumptions: Same published ranges as the preferred option (soda to tourist-restaurant) with the midpoint the plan uses; sales tax and service charge are not confirmed as included.

Planning range: USD 480 to 1,200. Low is soda-level eating; high prices tourist restaurants at $14 / $32.

Ground transport761estimateShared shuttles: SJO area to La Fortuna 2 x $74.50 = $149; La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio 2 x $78.50 = $157; Manuel Antonio to the airport area 2 x $61 = $122; La Fortuna local $177 (as the preferred option); airport hotel transfers $60; Manuel Antonio taxis 8 x $12 = $96. Total $761.00.

Assumptions: Midpoints of published ranges ($54-$95 and $62-$95 per person; the $54 figure appears only in a search snippet, the fetched SJO page showed $95); airport transfers and Manuel Antonio taxis are my estimates.

Planning range: USD 560 to 1,200. Low uses the cheapest quotes; high adds a private van for one leg.

Activities753.24derivedLa Fortuna Waterfall $40.00; Arenal park $33.90; Ecotermales $97.18; Mistico $56.00; safari float $168.00; Manuel Antonio guided group tour 2 x $65 = $130.00 (permit included); Damas Island boat 2 x $65 = $130.00; self-guided park ticket 2 x $18.08 = $36.16; Doka coffee tour 2 x $31 = $62.00. Total $753.24.

Assumptions: Operator pages read 2026-10-14. Manuel Antonio National Park is closed every Tuesday, sells timed tickets online only and sells out three to four weeks ahead in December.

Planning range: USD 429.4 to 1,120. Low $429.40 drops the safari float ($168) and the coffee tour ($62) and replaces the $130 guided park tour with the $36.16 self-guided ticket already in the basket (753.24 - 168 - 62 - 93.84); high swaps in Tabacón and adds Río Celeste and a Nauyaca-Uvita day.

Insurance and contingency250estimateFlat reserve of $250.00; a reserve, not an insurance quote.

Assumptions: Covers rate moves and small extras; it does NOT cover the possible El Salvador transit pass-through.

Planning range: USD 100 to 450. Low assumes no extras; high covers a fare move and a late-booking hotel premium.

Decision summary

Costa Rica works for this December as a fly-in and fly-out Liberia loop: five nights around La Fortuna for the volcano, hot springs and rainforest, then eight nights on the Guanacaste coast for dry-season beaches. The middle case is $6,756 for two, $244 under the firm ceiling, but entry rests on a US-visa substitute that must be verified and up to about $580 of the total (bag fees, fare move, hotel sales tax) is unconfirmed.

The preferred plan flies American Airlines via Dallas-Fort Worth (Skyscanner $2,583 for two) and avoids San Salvador, the cheaper Avianca route, because El Salvador's airport authority publishes a US$1,000 + VAT per-passenger tariff for listed transit nationalities that a third-party guide says includes India. That single issue is why the Liberia loop, at $6,756, is preferred to the Avianca route at $6,653 even though it costs about $103 more as priced (about $423 more carry-on only) and Avianca's own checkout showed only $2,377.50; the choice is about risk, not price. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lir/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://booking.avianca.com/av/booking/avail?departureDate=2026-12-23&from=SFO&to=SJO · https://www.cepa.gob.sv/tarifa-de-mejoras-aeroportuarias-del-aeropuerto-internacional-de-el-salvador/ · https://www.visahacks.in/need-visa/el-salvador

Hotels are the cheap half of the budget: $575 for five nights in La Fortuna and $800 for eight nights in Playas del Coco, both observed for the exact dates on Booking.com. Both carry a "We have 1 left" flag, and the platform reports that 80 to 95 percent of rated places are unavailable for these dates, so inventory is the real constraint, not price. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2026-12-28&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-28&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

The verdict is conditional, not a purchase recommendation. Entry for an Indian passport holder works only if a valid multiple-entry US visa counts as a Costa Rican visa, and two official sources disagree on how much remaining validity and which visa types qualify; the H-1B stamps the user reports may or may not count. https://www.embajadadecostarica.org/visas · https://indianembassypanama.gov.in/eoipa_pages/MzEz

Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T11:22:00Z

Entry and transit

Indian passports are in Costa Rica's consular-visa group, but a valid multiple-entry US visa works as a substitute; the validity and visa-type conditions conflict across official pages, so both US stamps must be checked before anything is booked.

The Costa Rican embassy page (Spanish) says nationals who need a consular visa may enter without one if they hold a multiple-entry visa or residence in any category from the United States or Canada (plus type D and C1/D), with at least one calendar day of validity counted from the entry date; US transit visas C1, C2 and C3 are not accepted. The Indian embassy in Panama (accredited to Costa Rica, page updated Oct 7, 2026) states B1/B2, D or C1/D with at least six months of validity. https://www.embajadadecostarica.org/visas · https://indianembassypanama.gov.in/eoipa_pages/MzEz

A user-attested H-1B stamp valid through the Jan 5 return does not prove either reading: six months from Dec 23 is about June 23, 2027. This is a purchase-blocking check, not an assumption. Costa Rica also requires proof of return or onward travel, which the Jan 5 ticket satisfies. https://www.visitcostarica.com/en/costa-rica/planning-your-trip/entry-requirements · https://indianembassypanama.gov.in/eoipa_pages/MzEz

The preferred route connects in Dallas-Fort Worth, so no third-country transit visa is involved. The Avianca alternative connects in San Salvador: CEPA's notice (Oct 20, 2023) sets a tariff of US$1,000 + VAT per transit passenger of listed nationalities billed to airlines; a third-party guide says India is listed and another says visa-free, and the nationality list on the official page is not machine-readable, so this is unresolved rather than confirmed. https://www.cepa.gob.sv/tarifa-de-mejoras-aeroportuarias-del-aeropuerto-internacional-de-el-salvador/ · https://www.visahacks.in/need-visa/el-salvador · https://canivisit.com/from/in/to/sv/

Climate and weather

December is the start of the dry season: La Fortuna still sees about 220 mm of rain and La Fortuna volcano views are good, while Guanacaste is the driest, sunniest and calmest-sea part of the country. These are regional climatology figures, not forecasts.

La Fortuna in December: rainfall around 220 mm (down from about 250 mm in November), days near 29 C (85 F) and a volcano-view score of about 9 out of 10 after months of cloud; the Arenal park guide recommends arriving at the 8:00 AM opening because clouds build around the 1,670 m peak later in the day, and calls December through April the clearest period. https://www.costaricadaytrip.com/guides/la-fortuna-in-december · https://arenal-volcano.com/hours-and-fees/

Guanacaste's dry season runs December through April; the transition is gradual, with a brief late-afternoon shower still possible in the first two weeks of December and fully dry conditions by weeks three and four, which covers this trip. The same source warns that Guanacaste is the most in-demand destination for the holidays and fills for Christmas and New Year, and says Caribbean-slope destinations are at their wettest. https://www.costarica-spirit.com/guides/december-weather-guide/

The Manuel Antonio alternative is wetter: the Quepos station averages about 501 mm over roughly 14 rainy days in December, mostly afternoon rain after dry mornings, with the last two weeks drier than the first. https://www.costaricawakootours.com/manuel-antonio-december-weather-crowds/ · https://www.costaricadaytrip.com/guides/manuel-antonio-in-december

Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T11:22:00Z

Experiences and closures

La Fortuna and Guanacaste are open through Christmas and New Year, but several of the best experiences need advance tickets or reservations in this peak window.

A SINAC announcement (for the 2025-26 holidays; 2026-27 holiday hours are unverified) says national parks stay open on Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan 1, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica says tour operators, attractions, parks and restaurants stay open with peak crowds from Dec 20 to Jan 5. The Arenal Volcano park is open 8:00 to 16:00 (peninsula sector to 17:00) every day including public holidays per a visitor guide (the official page lists daily hours without a holiday statement). https://ticosland.com/costa-rica-invites-public-to-explore-national-parks-during-holidays/ · https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/christmas-new-years-costa-rica/ · https://puravidajr.com/costa-rica-for-christmas-ultimate-family-holiday-guide/ · https://www.hallo-costarica.com/en/arenal-volcano-in-costa-rica-a-complete-guide-to-visiting-this-legendary-volcano/

Ecotermales caps daily entries and "does sell out" in December to April, so the operator advises booking at least two weeks ahead; its Night Pass runs 7:00 to 9:30 PM at the same $43 adult price plus 13 percent. Mistico Park tickets are timed and must be reserved ahead; open 6:00 AM with last entry at 3:50 PM. Rincón de la Vieja's ticket agent lists admission at $24.95 per adult for the Las Pailas or Santa María ranger stations. https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/product/ecotermales-hot-springs-entrance/ · https://misticopark.com/frequently-asked-questions/ · https://theunknownenthusiast.com/mistico-hanging-bridges/ · https://rincondelaviejapark.com/rincon-de-la-vieja-national-park-tickets/

Manuel Antonio National Park (the alternative route) is closed every Tuesday, sells timed tickets only online through SINAC, caps entry at 600 people a day and, in December to April, sells out three to four weeks ahead; Dec 29 and Jan 5 are Tuesdays. https://manuelantonionationalpark.org/learn/tickets-and-hours · https://www.costaricatravelplanner.com/blog/manuel-antonio-national-park-tickets-hours/

Neighborhoods and lodging

The base choices are a mid-range cabin near La Fortuna with breakfast and a beachfront room in the walkable harbour town of Playas del Coco; both are one-left inventory.

Arenal Rústic Lodge (8.6 from 460 reviews, 1.8 miles from the waterfall, breakfast included, one-bedroom chalet) was $575 for Dec 23 to 28; Cabañas Sueños del Arenal (8.9, 97 reviews) was $456 and Casa Macaw (9.0, 271 reviews, free cancellation) $316. The tour guide's Christmas-window benchmark for La Fortuna is $200 to $280 a night, so these rates are well below it. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2026-12-28&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.costaricadaytrip.com/guides/la-fortuna-in-december

In Playas del Coco, Hotel M&M Beach House (beachfront, 250 feet from downtown, 8.3 from 868 reviews) was $800 for eight nights with free cancellation and pay-at-property; Anika Boutique Suites (8.4, 700 feet from the beach) was $938. A beach guide calls the Coco beach grey-brown and one of the country's most overrated, and says the town's value is access: dive shops, restaurants, a supermarket, a small-boat harbour and a paved road of about 35 minutes to Liberia airport (one beach guide). Playa Hermosa, 5 km south, has the cleaner sheltered bay. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-28&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.costarica-spirit.com/guides/guanacaste-beach-guide/

Transport and travel fatigue

Each flight leg is under 11 hours with one stop in Dallas, but the schedule is hard: a 12:31 AM departure, then a private 3.5-hour transfer on arrival and a 3.5 to 4.5 hour shuttle on Dec 28.

Outbound is SFO 12:31 AM Dec 23 to LIR 1:00 PM (10h29 with a DFW connection) and the return is LIR 2:00 PM Jan 5 to SFO 10:17 PM (10h17); both are under the 24-hour cap. The 12:31 AM departure means being at SFO the night of Dec 22. The 3:15 PM Jan 5 return lands at 12:37 AM on Jan 6 and is $130 cheaper. Door to door the outbound is about 17 hours: a 12:31 AM departure, a 1:00 PM arrival, about an hour to clear and meet the driver, and 3.5 hours on the road. The listed shared LIR shuttles (09:20 at $95 per person and a 1:00 PM departure with no fare read) cannot be caught after a 1:00 PM landing, so a private minibus at $300 is the plan. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lir/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Ground legs mix private and shared transfers: LIR to La Fortuna by private minibus at $300 (3.5 hours; the shared options listed are 09:20 at $95 per person and a 1:00 PM departure with no fare read), La Fortuna to Playas del Coco $95 per person for 3.5 to 4.5 hours, and a Coco taxi to LIR quoted at $15 to $20 per vehicle for about 35 minutes (single beach-guide source). Hotels with the airport nearby make the last night low-risk. https://tropicaltourshuttles.com/routes/liberia-airport-shuttles/liberia-to-la-fortuna/ · https://volcanotravelcostarica.com/shuttle-from-liberia-airport-guanacaste-to-la-fortuna/ · https://www.costaricashuttlesbus.com/routes/la-fortuna-to-playas-del-coco-shared-shuttle · https://www.costarica-spirit.com/guides/guanacaste-beach-guide/

For comparison, the Manuel Antonio route needs a 4h43 to 7 hour shuttle on Dec 29 ($62 to $95 per person) and a 2h48 to 5 hour shuttle back to the airport, which is a heavier fatigue load than the Liberia loop's final hop. https://www.costaricashuttlesbus.com/routes/la-fortuna-to-manuel-antonio-shared-shuttle · https://www.transportationincostarica.com/shared-shuttles/la-fortuna-arenal-to-manuel-antonio-quepos · https://www.transportationincostarica.com/shared-shuttles/manuel-antonio-quepos-to-san-jose-airport-sjo

Budget and value

The middle case is $6,755.98 for two, with a range of about $5,004 to $8,876; the firm ceiling is $7,000 and the target $6,000.

Line totals: flights $2,583.00; hotels $1,375.00; meals $928.00; local transport $935.00; activities $634.98; contingency $300.00. Hotels are observed for exact dates; flights are an aggregator quote; meals, transport and activities are derived from published prices with ranges; the contingency is a reserve, not a premium. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lir/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2026-12-28&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-28&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://visitcostarica.es/blog/precios-comida-costa-rica-2026/

The swing factors are the airfare after the first-bag fee (about $400 of tail in the high case) and whether Booking.com totals already include 13 percent sales tax (about $180 on the $1,375 hotel line). The low case of $5,004 requires the cheaper return, cheaper rooms and no paid extras; the high case of $8,876 stacks every upgrade and is not the plan. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lir/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-28&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Value is experience per dollar against the Avianca route: $6,756 versus $6,653 as priced, so the Liberia loop costs about $103 more, or about $423 more if both travel carry-on only (Avianca Classic includes a checked bag each way, about $320; American's aggregator price excludes bags, so an American bag fee widens the gap). The Liberia loop carries no known single-point price risk; the Avianca route carries an unresolved transit tariff of up to about $2,260 for two, which would make it about $8,913. https://booking.avianca.com/av/booking/avail?departureDate=2026-12-23&from=SFO&to=SJO · https://www.cepa.gob.sv/tarifa-de-mejoras-aeroportuarias-del-aeropuerto-internacional-de-el-salvador/

Risks and cancellation

The risks are entry documents, the San Salvador tariff on the cheaper route, one-left inventory, sold-out tickets, wind-cancelled boats and holiday traffic.

The consular-visa substitute is unverified for both travelers; if a stamp does not qualify, a Costa Rican visa would be needed and no processing time was published on the pages read. The aa.com recheck was blocked by a bot challenge, so the American fare and first-bag fee are unconfirmed until checked in a normal browser. https://www.embajadadecostarica.org/visas · https://indianembassypanama.gov.in/eoipa_pages/MzEz · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lir/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Hotel M&M Beach House offers free cancellation with pay-at-property, which keeps the beach half flexible; the La Fortuna chalet card did not state a cancellation rule. Avianca Classic fares allow no refunds, and the booking page warns itinerary changes may incur fees; shuttle operators cited refund 100 percent at 48 hours and 50 percent at 24 to 48 hours. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-28&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://booking.avianca.com/av/booking/avail?departureDate=2026-12-23&from=SFO&to=SJO · https://www.transportationincostarica.com/shared-shuttles/manuel-antonio-quepos-to-san-jose-airport-sjo

Travelers' experience reports describe holiday-week demand: Two Weeks in Costa Rica puts peak crowds at Dec 20 to Jan 5, and the local operator guide for Manuel Antonio calls December the busiest month and says park slots sell out three to four weeks ahead; Río Celeste turns brown for about 24 hours after heavy rain, which is why it is not in the plan. https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/christmas-new-years-costa-rica/ · https://www.costaricawakootours.com/manuel-antonio-december-weather-crowds/ · https://junglelifecr.com/blog/rio-celeste-tickets-hours-visitor-guide

Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T11:22:00Z

Alternatives and pushback

The strongest alternative is the San José, La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio route on Avianca; it loses on the unresolved San Salvador tariff, the Tuesday park closure and the longer shuttles. A Dec 19 start was priced only for SJO: about $912 more airfare for two on Skyscanner ($456 pp) plus about $400-$500 of extra hotel nights at the observed rates; no Dec 19 LIR fare was priced.

SJO round trips from SFO: Avianca via San Salvador $920 to $1,077 per person on Skyscanner and $1,188.75 per person on Avianca's own site with a checked bag; United nonstop is $1,208 per person one-way on the 12:08 AM flight; Dec 19 raises the cheapest one-stop Avianca fare to $1,376 per person (+$456 pp; a $1,326 two-plus-stop option averages 15h57). From OAK the fares are $1,378 per person and up with two stops, and from SJC $1,303 (22h05 return) to $1,579 via Dallas, with $1,462 to $1,579 the sensible range; both lose to SFO. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjo/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://booking.avianca.com/av/booking/avail?departureDate=2026-12-23&from=SFO&to=SJO · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjo/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjo/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/sjo/261223/270105/?currency=USD

The best argument against my recommendation: Coco's beach is not Costa Rica's best, Guanacaste fills completely for Christmas, and eight beach nights is a lot of the trip for a traveler who also wants food and culture. The honest answer is that this route buys low cost and dry weather, not a food-led trip; Conchal and Flamingo day trips (white sand, calm mornings) are the upgrade for beach variety. https://www.costarica-spirit.com/guides/guanacaste-beach-guide/ · https://www.costarica-spirit.com/guides/december-weather-guide/

Guanacaste-only (LIR round trip, no La Fortuna) was not priced beyond lodging, and an LIR-in, SJO-out open-jaw could not be priced on Skyscanner round-trip search; both stay as checks. Río Celeste is the swap for a rainy La Fortuna day: private shuttle $185 per vehicle, $12 plus tax admission and a 2 PM entry cutoff. https://rio-celeste.org/hours-and-fees/ · https://cantwaittravelcr.com/private-shuttle/la-fortuna-to-rio-celeste

Provisional Itinerary

Itinerary follows Option 1: Costa Rica.

  1. Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · San Francisco (SFO) to Liberia (LIR) to La Fortuna

The American flight leaves SFO at 12:31 AM on Dec 23, so the real start is the night of Dec 22. After the Dallas connection it lands in Liberia at 1:00 PM, then a private minibus runs about 3.5 hours to La Fortuna and the first night is a hot shower, a soda dinner and sleep.

Travel day: SFO 12:31 AM, DFW connection, LIR 1:00 PM, then a 3.5-hour private transfer to La Fortuna; there is no daylight left for a visit.

Lodging: Arenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna (Dec 23-28, breakfast included)

Transfer: Home to SFO the evening of Dec 22; LIR arrival 1:00 PM; private minibus LIR to La Fortuna about $300 (3.5 hours); shared departures listed are 09:20 ($95 pp) and 1:00 PM (fare not read), neither catchable; about 17 hours door to door.

Weather alternative: Not weather dependent; if the driver is late, a Liberia hotel night is the fallback (unpriced, not in the totals).

  2. Day 2 · 2026-12-24 · La Fortuna

Morning is slow: breakfast at the lodge, a walk to see how the town decorates for Christmas Eve and a look at the volcano if it is clear. The afternoon is the waterfall, the one big sight within taxi range, and the evening is a soda dinner next to the central park.

    La Fortuna Waterfall

Why it matters: A 70-75 m cascade into an emerald pool inside a 210-acre biological reserve, the best-known sight in the area.

Why this visit: It is the easy first-afternoon win: about 500 concrete steps, a swim if the current allows, and no guide needed. I would go after lunch when the tour buses have thinned.

Time: 10 minutes down, 20+ back up; allow 2 to 3 hours with a swim. Open daily 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Swimsuit underneath; one independent traveler warns the current is very strong, so stay near the shore. No public bus; use a taxi or Uber.

Cost basis: $20 per person ($40 for two); operator page says $18-20

La Fortuna town and Christmas Eve dinner

Why it matters: Costa Rican towns decorate the central park with lights and nativity scenes, and La Fortuna's decorations are shown in a Christmas guide; most tourism businesses stay open.

Why this visit: I would eat at the soda on the park's southeast corner, where plates run $5-7 from a menu of more than 100 items, for a local Christmas Eve rather than a resort buffet.

Time: 1.5 to 2 hours. Walkable from town hotels; sodas open early. Some small businesses may close on Dec 25 and Jan 1 (not confirmed in the saved sources), so buy anything you need on Dec 24.

Cost basis: About $14-20 for two at a soda (inside the meals line)

Lodging: Arenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna (Dec 23-28, breakfast included)

Transfer: Taxi to the waterfall $10-15 one way or Uber $4-6; town is walkable from most hotels.

Weather alternative: In rain, move the waterfall to the next dry morning (swimming is unsafe in high water) and spend the afternoon at a hot spring or a covered soda.

  3. Day 3 · 2026-12-25 · La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano National Park)

Christmas morning is the volcano: be at the gate for the 8:00 AM opening, walk the Las Coladas lava-flow trail in the clear air, and spend the afternoon on the Los Miradores lake-view walk in the peninsula sector, which stays open an hour later.

Arenal Volcano National Park: Las Coladas trail (volcano sector)

Why it matters: Arenal woke on 29 July 1968, destroyed nearby villages and killed more than 80 people, then erupted for decades before resting; Las Coladas (1.7 km) crosses the 1992 lava flows.

Why this visit: It is the one place where the volcano explains itself: bare black flows in a rainforest, best seen in morning clear air, which December through April offers.

Time: 2 to 3 hours. Open 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry 2:30 PM), every day including public holidays per a visitor guide (the official page lists daily hours without a holiday statement); foreign adults $15 plus tax, same-day access to both sectors; summit is closed to all.

Cost basis: $15 + tax per adult = $16.95; $33.90 for two (both parks sectors)

Arenal park: Los Miradores trail (peninsula sector)

Why it matters: A 1.2 km trail on the lake side of the park with views over Lake Arenal and the volcano cone.

Why this visit: It uses the same ticket for a second, easier walk when afternoon cloud has covered the peak, and the sector stays open until 5:00 PM (last entry 4:00 PM).

Time: 1 to 1.5 hours. Same-day ticket covers both sectors; confirm the sector hours at the gate.

Cost basis: Included in the same ticket

Lodging: Arenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna (Dec 23-28, breakfast included)

Transfer: Taxi about 15 km from town (proxy $30 one way, from the $25-35 taxi quote to Mistico); the ticket is credit-card only at the gate.

Weather alternative: If the peak is in cloud by 9:00 AM, swap in the Heliconias flat walk and a long soda lunch, and soak in the evening instead.

  4. Day 4 · 2026-12-26 · La Fortuna (Mistico and Ecotermales)

A rainforest morning at canopy level on the Mistico bridges, a quiet afternoon, and the Ecotermales night pass from 7:00 PM when the springs are calm and the day-trippers have gone.

    Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges

Why it matters: A 3.2 km rainforest trail with a string of suspension bridges about 20 m above the ground and a side trail to a waterfall; a Christmas guide describes 16 bridges.

Why this visit: Canopy-level birds and monkeys are the best nature value in town per dollar, and an early start beats the tour groups.

Time: 2 to 3 hours. Open 6:00 AM, last entry 3:50 PM; tickets are timed and must be reserved in advance.

    Cost basis: $28 per person = $56

    Ecotermales Night Pass

Why it matters: Arenal's geothermal springs are heated by the volcano; Ecotermales caps daily entries and keeps a quieter atmosphere than the large resorts.

Why this visit: After a day on trails it is the low-effort evening, and the night session (7:00-9:30 PM) is calmer and cooler.

Time: 2.5 hours. Reserve at least two weeks ahead in December to April because it sells out; no transportation provided; cancellation refund depends on notice (at least 5 days for a 100 percent refund less $20).

    Cost basis: $43 per adult + 13% tax = $48.59; $97.18 for two

Lodging: Arenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna (Dec 23-28, breakfast included)

Transfer: Mistico shared shuttle $8 per person one way every 2 hours or taxi $25-35; Ecotermales has no transport, take a taxi (proxy $30 each way).

Weather alternative: Mistico runs in light rain with a poncho; if a storm closes the bridges, move the hot spring earlier and book the safari float for Dec 27.

  5. Day 5 · 2026-12-27 · La Fortuna (safari float and soda food crawl)

A gentle two-hour float on the Peñas Blancas river looking for sloths, monkeys and crocodiles, then a long lunch and dinner at the local sodas and one volcano-view dinner if the budget allows.

    Peñas Blancas river safari float

Why it matters: A motor-free inflatable-raft drift on the Peñas Blancas river where guides point out sloths, howler monkeys, crocodiles and birds.

Why this visit: It is the best way to see wildlife without hiking, which suits a day after the volcano and hot springs.

Time: About 2 hours plus pickup. Hotel pickup; free cancellation up to 48 hours on one operator and 24 hours on another; both list kids prices.

Cost basis: $84 per person taxes included = $168 (cheapest operator from $71)

La Fortuna sodas: La Hormiga, La Parada, Los Rodriguez

Why it matters: A soda is a small family restaurant serving the casado (rice, black beans, salad, plantains and a protein), the national lunch plate.

Why this visit: This is the food chapter of the La Fortuna half: a $5-7 plate is the cheapest good meal in the country, and Don Rufino offers volcano-view dining for a splurge.

Time: 1 hour per meal. La Hormiga opens at 6 AM beside the bus terminal; La Parada faces the park; Los Rodriguez is usually packed.

Cost basis: About $5-7 per plate; inside the meals line

Lodging: Arenal Rústic Lodge, La Fortuna (Dec 23-28, breakfast included)

Transfer: Hotel pickup is included with the float; the sodas are in town.

Weather alternative: The float runs in light rain; if it pours, drop it and spend the day at the sodas and an extra hot-spring soak. The operators refund only if cancelled 24 to 48 hours ahead, so a same-day storm can cost the $168; the Dec 28 morning transfer is unaffected.

  6. Day 6 · 2026-12-28 · La Fortuna to Playas del Coco

A shuttle day: leave La Fortuna in the morning on the shared van, ride 3.5 to 4.5 hours to Playas del Coco, check in at the beachfront hotel and walk the beach at sunset.

Travel day: a 3.5 to 4.5 hour shared shuttle from La Fortuna to Coco leaves no room for a scheduled visit; the sunset walk on the beachfront is a free bonus, not a plan.

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

Transfer: Shared shuttle La Fortuna to Playas del Coco $95 per person, 3.5 to 4.5 hours, no ferry; Coco is about 35 minutes from Liberia airport (one beach guide).

Weather alternative: Not weather dependent; a delayed shuttle only shortens the sunset walk.

  7. Day 7 · 2026-12-29 · Playas del Coco

A day to settle in: breakfast near the hotel, a swim at the town beach, a stroll through the shops and a long dinner of fresh fish; this is the base-building day before the Rincón de la Vieja trip.

Playas del Coco beach and town

Why it matters: The most accessible beach town in Guanacaste from Liberia airport (about 35 minutes, per one beach guide) with the province's biggest cluster of dive shops, restaurants, a supermarket and a small-boat harbour; the beach itself is grey-brown.

Why this visit: It is a base, not a postcard: I would use it for access to the Gulf of Papagayo beaches and sunset boats, and the town beach for easy swims.

Time: 2 to 3 hours. Walk from the beachfront hotel; the nearest ATM and supermarket are in town.

    Cost basis: Free

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

Transfer: Walk from the hotel (250 feet from downtown).

Weather alternative: Afternoon sea breezes pick up in the dry season; swim in the morning, and if it is windy, walk the main street instead.

  8. Day 8 · 2026-12-30 · Rincón de la Vieja National Park

A nature day at a volcano park: hire a driver for the day, walk the Las Pailas trail through volcanic features in the morning and the La Cangreja waterfall trail in the afternoon, and be back for dinner at the harbour.

Rincón de la Vieja: Las Pailas trail

Why it matters: Las Pailas is one of two sectors of the park (the other is Santa María); SINAC describes volcanic manifestations along the Las Pailas trail.

Why this visit: It is the nature day of the Guanacaste half and a different landscape from La Fortuna: dry forest and active volcanic features.

Time: 2 to 3 hours. Admission covers one ranger station; hot springs, mud baths, zip lines and river tubing are extra and not budgeted.

Cost basis: $24.95 per adult = $49.90 for two (covers both trails)

Rincón de la Vieja: La Cangreja waterfall trail

Why it matters: A waterfall trail from the Las Pailas ranger station (with the Escondida waterfall).

Why this visit: It gives a swim-and-view finish; I would take the waterfall in the afternoon when the morning has cooled the trail.

Time: 2 to 3 hours. Same Las Pailas ranger-station admission; hours were not readable from the official page, so confirm closing time before planning the drive back.

Cost basis: Included in the same admission

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

Transfer: One-day private driver, my estimate $200 (no quote retrieved); drive time not sourced, so confirm it with the driver; park admission is bought on the day or online.

Weather alternative: The Pacific side is dry; if the volcano is clouded, the waterfalls and trails still work, and the fallback is a beach day at Ocotal.

  9. Day 9 · 2026-12-31 · Playas del Coco (New Year's Eve)

A lazy beach morning, an afternoon sunset sail and snorkel from the harbour, and a New Year's Eve dinner in town with fireworks on the beach.

Sunset sail and snorkel from Playas del Coco

Why it matters: Playas del Coco is the departure point for sunset sailing and snorkelling trips; a beach guide lists a sunset sail-and-snorkel from $95.

Why this visit: It is the one paid extra that gives the Pacific at its best on a dry-season evening, and December has the calmest seas of the year.

Time: About 3 to 4 hours. Book ahead for the holiday week; ask about the wind cancellation policy; the "from" price is not a dated quote.

    Cost basis: $95 per person = $190

New Year's Eve in Playas del Coco

Why it matters: Many Costa Rican towns hold a fireworks display for New Year, and locals set off smaller ones on the beach.

Why this visit: A night at the beach with families and fireworks is the local way to see it and needs no booking.

Time: 2 to 3 hours. Walk from the hotel; expect holiday crowds from Dec 20 to Jan 5; some small businesses may close on Jan 1 (unconfirmed).

Cost basis: Free; dinner in the meals line

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

Transfer: Walk to the harbour; book the boat ahead.

Weather alternative: If afternoon winds cancel the boat, hope for the refund policy; the fallback is the town beach and a dinner reservation.

  10. Day 10 · 2027-01-01 · Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal

A slow New Year's Day: sleep in, then a short taxi to Playa Ocotal for snorkelling in the rocky coves, and a quiet dinner at the hotel.

    Playa Ocotal

Why it matters: A small black-sand beach at the entrance to the Gulf of Papagayo, about 30 minutes from Liberia airport, where rocky formations flanking the beach are good for snorkelling.

Why this visit: It is the calmer, quieter swim and snorkel alternative to the town beach, and a good use of a day when everything else is closed.

Time: 3 to 4 hours. Free public beach; bring your own mask; taxi from Coco; Gulf of Papagayo waters are tranquil.

Cost basis: Free; taxi in the transport line

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

Transfer: Taxi about 3 km north (my estimate $12 each way).

Weather alternative: If the water is murky or windy, stay at the hotel's beachfront and swim off the town beach.

  11. Day 11 · 2027-01-02 · Playas del Coco

A rest-and-explore day on the harbour: late breakfast, an optional snorkel trip or fishing charter, and a seafood dinner.

    Playa Hermosa

Why it matters: A bay 5 km south of Coco with a sheltered sandy bottom and cleaner water, with several resort hotels directly on the beach.

Why this visit: It is the better swim than the town beach and the logical beach day from Coco.

Time: 3 to 4 hours. Taxi or shuttle from Coco (roughly $12 each way, my estimate); free public beach.

Cost basis: Free; taxi in the transport line

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

    Transfer: Walk to the harbour.

Weather alternative: If it rains or the boats do not run, spend the day at the beach and in the shops.

  12. Day 12 · 2027-01-03 · Playas del Coco

A last full beach day: swim, read, and book the Jan 4 farewell dinner; if either traveler dives, the Catalina Islands manta season runs November to April.

Catalina Islands (optional dive or snorkel day)

Why it matters: A chain of volcanic pinnacles 45 minutes from Playas del Coco where oceanic manta rays visit from November to April.

Why this visit: It is the marine wildlife highlight of the Guanacaste half for divers, and I would skip it otherwise because it needs a local dive first and is not budgeted.

Time: 6:00 AM to about 1:00 PM. Minimum four divers, a prior local dive with the operator, dive insurance about $19-20 a day and $35 gear rental; price not published on the page.

Cost basis: Not budgeted; optional extra

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

    Transfer: Walk.

Weather alternative: If it is windy, a hotel-pool and town day.

  13. Day 13 · 2027-01-04 · Playas del Coco

A final day of packing and a farewell dinner by the harbour; an early night before the Jan 5 flight, with the airport about 35 minutes away (one beach guide).

Playas del Coco harbour and farewell dinner

Why it matters: The town's small-boat harbour is the base for sport fishing, tour boats and the dive shops that run to the Catalina Islands.

Why this visit: It is the working side of Coco, and fresh fish at the harbour is the food finale.

Time: 2 hours. Walk from the hotel; reserve for the holiday week.

Cost basis: About $40-70 for two (meals line)

Lodging: Hotel M&M Beach House, Playas del Coco (Dec 28 - Jan 5, beachfront)

Transfer: Walk; book the airport taxi for 11:00 AM on Jan 5 ($15-20 per vehicle).

    Weather alternative: Not weather dependent.

  14. Day 14 · 2027-01-05 · Playas del Coco to Liberia (LIR) to San Francisco (SFO)

Check out in the morning, take a taxi to LIR (about 35 minutes per one beach guide), fly at 2:00 PM via Dallas and land in San Francisco at 10:17 PM.

Travel day: LIR 2:00 PM, DFW connection, SFO 10:17 PM.

    Lodging: None; flying home

Transfer: Taxi Coco to LIR $15-20 per vehicle (about 35 minutes, one beach guide); arrive about three hours before the 2:00 PM flight.

Weather alternative: Not weather dependent; a missed DFW connection is the American rebooking policy risk.

What Travelers Say

“most businesses staying open, with peak tourist crowds from December 20-January 5” Christmas and New Year in Costa Rica means warm weather, festive beach gatherings and most businesses staying open, with peak tourist crowds from Dec 20 to Jan 5; many towns hold a fireworks display for New Year and locals set off smaller ones on the beach. Confirms that holiday travel works if booked early.

Two Weeks in Costa Rica (editorial travel blog), travel blog, Christmas and New Year in Costa Rica guide · source

Calls December two trips in one month: the weeks before Dec 18 are cheap and quiet, while from about Dec 20 the area becomes the busiest and priciest of the year (rooms about $200-280 a night); volcano views score about 9 of 10. Confirms the peak-window pricing and why the rates I found are good.

“There are 500 steps to go down (and then back up), and it's typically 30 degrees with 90% humidity.” Complicates the waterfall: it is the most popular thing you can do without a guided tour, but there are 500 steps down and back up in heat, and a lifeguard quote says the current is very strong. Supports taking it after lunch and swimming only near the shore.

Nomadic Backpacker (independent traveler), travel blog, La Fortuna Waterfall guide, 2026 · source

“frequently cited as one of the country's most overrated beaches” Contradicts any picture of Coco as a beach town: the beach is grey-brown and the town is its access to Papagayo beaches, dive shops and boats; Playa Hermosa has the cleaner sheltered bay, and Conchal and Flamingo are the white-sand upgrade.

Costa Rica Spirit (guide), Guanacaste beach guide, 2026 · source

“It takes roughly 24 hours without rain for the color to come back.” Explains why Río Celeste is a rainy-day swap rather than a fixed plan: the colour fades for about a day after heavy rain, entry is online only and closes at 2:00 PM, and the trail takes about three hours. Complicates the Tenorio option.

Open Flags

  • Whether both travelers' US visa stamps (H-1B per the user, not recorded in the decision profile) qualify as the Costa Rican visa substitute: the embassy and Indian advisory disagree on validity (one day versus six months) and on visa types.
  • Whether the American SFO-DFW-LIR fare of $2,583 holds, and the first-checked-bag fee: the aa.com recheck was blocked by a bot challenge.
  • Whether the Booking.com stay totals for Arenal Rústic Lodge and Hotel M&M Beach House include 13 percent sales tax (about $180 on $1,375); both rooms showed "We have 1 left".
  • SINAC holiday opening for Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan 1 comes from a 2025-26 announcement; 2026-27 holiday hours are unverified.
  • Whether the San Salvador transit tariff (US$1,000 + VAT per passenger) applies to Indian passports on the Avianca routing; the official nationality list was not readable.
  • Rincón de la Vieja park hours and a driver quote: the SINAC page returned a certificate error and the driver day is an estimate.
  • Remote-work permission abroad and US re-entry are user-attested, not verified (decision profile, Oct 10, 2026).
  • The Jan 4 airport-area hotel night for the Avianca alternative was blocked by a WAF challenge and priced by derivation.
  • [source] The draft attributes an H-1B stamp to the user as user-attested, but [private artifact omitted] only attests that both travelers hold valid US visa stamps through the return date (usReentry). It does not record stamp type. The H-1B detail comes from conversation, not from the attested profile.
  • [source] The Coco-to-LIR 'about 35 minutes' figure is repeated in several places (cost, transfer, day plan, and the final-day plan). Each is labelled 'one beach guide', but the wording is sometimes stated without the qualifier, and the 24-hour travel-time cap depends on it.
  • [consistency] Ground-high sensitivity wording does not match its own components. Line 227 says '$50 (a $250 driver day)' and '$32 (Coco taxis at $20)'. The stated labels do not explain the amounts: a $250 driver day is not a $50 increment, and $20 of Coco taxis is not $32. The arithmetic 935+50+32+150=1,167 ties, but the explanation does not.
  • [consistency] Candidate 2 hotel high sensitivity mislabels the figure. Line 526 says high $2,396 is 'the Bongo upgrade to a $2,120 total stay'. Per line 505, the Bongo upgrade is +$381 (Bongo $1,350 total for six nights, versus Vista del Pacifico $969). $2,120 is not the Bongo stay total and is not reconciled to any line in the draft.
  • [consistency] Unverified comparative figures in the Dec 19 start sentence (about $912 more airfare for two, $456 pp, and about $400-$500 extra hotel nights) are not tied to a draft line item or an evidence path in the reviewed text.
  • [coverage] Dec 26 itinerary weatherAlternative says to book the safari float for Dec 27, but Dec 27 is already the safari float day. The fallback is internally inconsistent, which contradicts the round-4 claim that the Dec 27 fallback is single and consistent.
  • [coverage] Arenal Dec 25 logistics attributes 'every day including public holidays' to a visitor guide. The official Arenal page (arenal-volcano.com) gives Monday to Sunday 08:00 to 16:00 hours and says nothing about holidays. The only holiday wording is from hallo-costarica, a secondary guide. The round-3 holiday finding is only partly fixed: the claim is attributed, but the official page does not confirm it.
  • [coverage] Dec 23 Liberia fallback is unpriced. The draft says it is not in the totals, which is disclosed, but the fallback is still a decision-relevant cost and time item.
  • [coverage] Casa Macaw breakfast price is not sourced in the evidence files reviewed. The round-4 wording is improved, but the price basis should be explicit.
  • [coverage] Open-jaw (LIR in, SJO out) and Guanacaste-only alternatives are unpriced beyond lodging, so the alternatives section does not give a like-for-like total.
  • [coverage] Entry block: Costa Rican embassy and Indian embassy sources conflict on which US visa types and validity periods qualify for visa-free entry. The user-attested H-1B stamp does not clearly qualify on the strictest reading. Lead time and last safe date are null, which is defensible because the consular timeline is unpublished, but the conflict must be explicit in the purchase-blocking check.
  • [opportunities] The Dec 26 and Dec 27 weather fallbacks contradict the itinerary. The Dec 26 fallback (draft ~line 1589) says to book the safari float for Dec 27, but the float is already on Dec 27. The Dec 27 fallback (~line 1634) says the Dec 28 morning transfer is unaffected, which is not a valid fallback for the float day and leaves the float reschedule path unstated.
  • [opportunities] Candidate 2 (Avianca) rationale labels the high case as about $8,913, but its rangeUsd.high is 8,743.5. The $8,913 figure is the transit-tariff scenario (6,652.74 + 2,260). The labels are inconsistent and a reader cannot tell which high-end figure is the decision number.
  • [opportunities] Entry-document realism remains unresolved and is correctly flagged as purchase-blocking, but the draft's entry block still shows leadTimeDays and lastSafeApplyDate as null. entry-costa-rica.txt shows the Costa Rican embassy requires one calendar day of US multiple-entry validity, while the Indian embassy advisory requires B1/B2, D or C1/D with six months validity. An H-1B stamp is neither. The unresolved state should appear in the entry block, not only in the narrative.
  • [opportunities] Holiday-closure support is weaker than the draft's framing. The SINAC source cited covers the 2025 and 2026 holidays (Dec 24, 25, 31 2025 and Jan 1 2026), not the Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 dates this trip uses. Any statement that parks or banks are open or closed on the trip dates must be marked as prior-year guidance and checked again.
  • [opportunities] The airline-direct check is still unverified. The aa.com page returned a bot challenge, so the $2,583 fare is an aggregator figure and must not be presented as airline-direct.
  • source: The draft attributes an H-1B stamp to the user as user-attested, but [private artifact omitted] only attests that both travelers hold valid US visa stamps through the return date (usReentry). Your Action Plan

Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.

  1. High priority: Confirm the US visa stamps qualify for entry to Costa Rica

Why: Costa Rica's embassy says any multiple-entry US visa works with one day left; India's advisory says B1/B2, D or C1/D with six months left; an H-1B is neither B1/B2 nor D.

How to check: Photograph each stamp (type, Entries, expiry) and email the Costa Rican consulate that serves California, citing both texts, asking for a written answer on H-1B stamps.

Decision impact: A yes (and expiry on or after about June 23, 2027) clears entry; a no turns this into a consular-visa trip with an unpublished timeline and pauses the plan.

  2. High priority: Recheck the American SFO-DFW-LIR fare and first-bag fee on aa.com

Why: Skyscanner showed $1,291.50 per person for the 12:31 AM / 2:00 PM pair but the airline site blocked me and bag fees are not in the aggregator price.

How to check: In a normal browser open aa.com, search SFO to LIR, Dec 23 to Jan 5, two adults, economy; note the total and the first checked bag fee at checkout without buying.

Decision impact: A flight total at or below about $2,827 with bags keeps the middle case under $7,000; above that, rerun the comparison, including the Avianca route.

  3. High priority: Read the tax line and breakfast status on the two Booking.com property pages

Why: Booking.com's stay total states taxes only on some cards, and both rooms showed one left; the high case adds 13 percent.

How to check: Open Arenal Rústic Lodge (Dec 23-28) and Hotel M&M Beach House (Dec 28 - Jan 5), choose the quoted room and read the price breakdown and cancellation terms.

Decision impact: If taxes are included the hotel line stays at $1,375; if not, add about $179 and keep or drop the sail.

  4. Medium priority: Ask Avianca whether an El Salvador transit charge applies to an Indian passport on SFO-SAL-SJO

Why: CEPA publishes a US$1,000 + VAT per-passenger transit tariff for listed nationalities billed to airlines and a third-party guide says India is listed.

How to check: Contact Avianca (chat or phone) with the exact itinerary and ask in writing whether the tariff is passed to the passenger; the official nationality list is on CEPA's notice (not readable as text).

Decision impact: A written no raises the Avianca route to a fair competitor; a yes confirms the Liberia loop and removes the Avianca route.

  5. Medium priority: Reserve Ecotermales (night pass) and Mistico timed tickets

Why: Ecotermales caps entries and sells out Dec-Apr; Mistico tickets are timed and reserved in advance.

How to check: Use the operator reservation pages (ecotermalesfortuna.cr reservation, Mistico Park booking) and compare cancellation terms.

Decision impact: Sold out on Dec 26 means swapping to Tabacón ($124-$180 each) or moving the day, which changes the activity line by up to $260.

  6. Medium priority: Get a Rincón de la Vieja driver quote and the park closing time

Why: The drive time and fee are not in any source I could read, and the day driver is my $200 estimate.

How to check: Ask the hotel or a Coco tour desk for a one-day driver price to the Las Pailas ranger station and read the SINAC page in a normal browser.

Decision impact: A quote above about $300 means dropping Rincón and swapping a beach day; below $200 saves money.

  7. Low priority: Look up the stays in the Chase Travel portal

Why: Chase's public pages do not list these properties; the portal needs the user's login.

How to check: Log in yourself and search the property names for Dec 23-28 and Dec 28 - Jan 5.

Decision impact: A portal match is upside only and never changes the choice of room; do not rely on benefits for the budget.

Limitations And Freshness

Research expires after 30 days; price snapshots become historical after 24 hours. Always recheck current availability. Failed or incomplete checks are not confirmed facts.

  • Actual researcher model identity is unverified; configured model is not runtime proof.
  • Regular browser canvas used; cookie and login isolation are unknown.
  • American Airlines direct pricing was blocked by a bot challenge and was not bypassed; the SFO-LIR fare is an aggregator quote.
  • Booking.com served an AWS WAF challenge to scripted requests for the Manuel Antonio and Jan 4 Alajuela searches; I stopped scripted fetching, read the Manuel Antonio page through the browser and priced the Jan 4 night by derivation.
  • The official El Salvador transit nationality list was not machine-readable, so whether India is covered by the transit tariff is unresolved.
  • The SINAC pages for Rincón de la Vieja and Tenorio returned certificate or access errors; park hours for Rincón are unconfirmed.
  • Costs for meals, local transport and several activities are derived from published guides, not dated quotes; ranges are shown.
  • US re-entry and remote-work permission are user-attested (decision profile, Oct 10, 2026), not verified.
  • During hotel research one click saved a property to Booking.com's signed-out wishlist heart; it was removed immediately. No sign-in or account data was used.
