Assessment And Lifecycle
| Dimension | This report |
|---|---|
| Research progress | Incomplete |
| Independent review | Provisional research: independent review evidence is incomplete or not cleared for this draft. |
| Freshness | Historical; refresh needed |
| Recommendation | Conditional: Quiet beach, gallery town and whale season fit the food-and-culture and beach priorities and the cost is about USD 6,976 for two (range USD 4,172 to 9,454); it is only about USD 24 under the firm USD 7,000 ceiling and rests on a Southwest fare that could not be reproduced on the airline site. There is no winter scenery and one stop each way. |
| Research confidence | Moderate: Exact-date two-traveler fares were read on Skyscanner, United and Alaska and the hotel on Booking.com and Hilton.com within hours, and entry comes from the Mexican consulate page, but Southwest.com and Hyatt.com failed, bag fees and taxes use stated schedules, and meals, taxis and activities rely on Numbeo and guides. |
| Itinerary confidence | Moderate: The 14-day plan keeps one base, uses swimmable coves, schedules whales in January and includes weather swaps, but holiday opening hours, the Art Walk on Dec 24 and Dec 31, and the New Year menu were not confirmed. |
| Price evidence | Partly observed: Exact-date two-traveler fares were read on Skyscanner, United and Alaska and the Hyatt Place price on Booking.com on 2026-10-14, but the Southwest fare was not reproduced airline-direct, bag fees and taxes use stated schedules, and meals, taxis and activities are estimates. |
| Booking readiness | Checks outstanding: no automated booking clearance or purchase authorization |

Advisor memo
Los Cabos is a conditional yes at about USD 6,976 for two, on a Southwest fare seen only on Skyscanner.
My recommendation
Go to San Jose del Cabo, fly out of Oakland on Southwest with one stop each way, and stay thirteen nights at Hyatt Place Los Cabos. I priced that trip at about USD 6,976 for the two of you, only about USD 24 under your firm USD 7,000 ceiling, using a Southwest fare I could see only on Skyscanner, not on Southwest's own site. A realistic range is USD 4,172 to 9,454, and the airfare is what moves it. This is a conditional yes, not a confident one.
Entry should be simple if your US stamps are valid. The Mexican consulate in San Francisco says a valid, unexpired US visa replaces a Mexican visa for tourism or transit, as long as passport and visa both cover the whole stay; the page states this generally and does not name Indian passports. There is no lead time and no last safe application date, but it rests on your own statement that both US stamps are valid through January 5, which I could not verify. Read the expiry date on each stamp first.
The one thing that flips this is the Southwest fare. Skyscanner lists it at USD 634 per person, USD 1,267 for two. Southwest.com would not show me a fare list after two tries, so I could not confirm it on the airline's own site. Alaska's site shows Oakland to San Jose del Cabo from USD 995 per person, and at that price the trip costs about USD 7,735, well over your ceiling.
Why this trip fits the two of you
You asked for beach, food and culture, winter scenery, nature and value. Los Cabos serves beach, food and a bit of culture, and the whale season serves nature. It trades away winter scenery completely: the tourism board describes December through February as pleasantly cool, around 75 degrees, with about 300 sunny days a year. That is climatology, not a forecast, but I would not pretend there is any snow to find.
San Jose del Cabo is the right base for your preferences. Three independent guides describe it the same way: quieter and older than Cabo San Lucas, with a colonial center, a gallery district and farm-to-table dinners, and little going on after 10 PM. If you want nightlife, this is the wrong town. If you want a long dinner and a gallery walk, it is the right one.
Thirteen nights on one base is long. That is the point of the window, and I built in several days with almost nothing planned, because a beach town with one hotel gets repetitive if you try to fill every day.
How the trip unfolds
Arrival, December 23. The Southwest flight leaves Oakland at 7:05 AM, stops in Santa Ana, and lands at 12:50 PM. Take the airport taxi at the official kiosk, about USD 75, check in and eat at the hotel. I would do nothing else.
The first week in San Jose. On Christmas Eve, a Thursday, walk the plaza and the 1730 mission, then the gallery district. The Thursday Art Walk runs from November through June, but whether it runs on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve is unconfirmed, so ask. On Christmas Day take a taxi to Chileno Bay, one of the calm coves the tourism board names for swimming. The same board warns that some beaches have rip currents and undertows, so check the flag color every time: green is safe, red or black means stay out.
The hotel is Hyatt Place. I picked it because it is the one stay I could price with taxes spelled out, it includes a breakfast buffet that guests call better than most hotel breakfasts, the rate cancels free until December 21, and it is about 984 feet from a beach. The Stay guide notes a car is essentially required here, which is why I budgeted taxis. If you would rather spend about USD 710 less before any tax, Hampton Inn & Suites shows USD 128 a night on Hilton's own site with breakfast and parking, but it sits at Km 24.8 on the Transpeninsular highway in Cerro Colorado (I did not read its distance from the old town) and its tax treatment is unstated. I could not tell you whether Hyatt Place carries Chase Travel benefits; no public Chase page lists it.
Food, and a day in Todos Santos. One day is a long lunch at Flora Farms, a 25-acre organic farm in the foothills that the tourism board credits with defining farm-to-table dining here. Another is a private-driver day to Todos Santos, a Pueblo Magico founded in 1723 and about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas. It is the best culture day of the trip. Its Pacific beaches are for surfers, not for swimming. I assumed USD 250 for the driver because the airport rate card lists Todos Santos as quote on request.
New Year. December 31 is a Thursday. The tourism page says restaurants prepare special menus, but that page is dated 2019, so I would not trust a venue or a price until a restaurant confirms it. Book a set-menu table and the taxi home ahead of time. January 1 is a recovery day.
The whale day, January 2. This is the nature highlight. Whale season runs December to April, with January and February the highest-encounter months, and the LivingInCabo guide puts shared tours at USD 80 to 120 per person. Nearly all of them leave from the Cabo San Lucas marina, as the Baja Pass guide points out, so I made it a Cabo San Lucas day: morning tour, then the water taxi to El Arco and Lover's Beach, then lunch on Medano. January 3 is the backup if the sea is rough.
Departure, January 5. The 3:45 PM flight via San Diego lands in Oakland at 8:25 PM.
What it will really cost
Here is the arithmetic. Flights are USD 1,447: USD 1,267 for two Southwest fares plus USD 180 for four checked bags at USD 45, which is Southwest's posted US mainland fee because I could not read a Mexico schedule. The room is USD 2,374: USD 1,935 listed for 13 nights plus 20 percent for VAT and tax plus USD 52 in environmental fees, breakfast included. Meals are USD 1,570, taxis USD 921, whale tour and water taxi USD 218, and I added USD 446.49 for an insurance placeholder and a 5 percent reserve. The total is USD 6,976.29.
Only the flight price and the room price are read from pages, and neither was confirmed on the airline's or hotel's own site. Meals, taxis and tours are estimates built from Numbeo, guide ranges and the airport taxi rate card, each with a range in the dossier. The low case is about USD 4,172; the high case is about USD 9,454, which is over your ceiling.
On value, I rate this conditional. It costs about USD 896 less than the nonstop version out of San Francisco for about four extra hours of travel in total (about 1.5 hours out and 2.3 back). That is a good trade if the fare holds.
Where this can go wrong
First, the fare. Southwest-direct did not load, so the cheap fare is unconfirmed, and the bag fee is borrowed from the mainland schedule. Second, taxes: I computed them for Hyatt Place from the exclusions the page states, not from a final total. Third, the surf. Beach flags decide your beach days, and a hotel near the water does not make the water safe.
Fourth, the holiday week. Closures, set menus, the Art Walk and taxi prices around Christmas and New Year are unconfirmed. Fifth, the pace: this is not a trip for people who need nightlife or snow, and the Baja Pass guide says activity-heavy visitors are happier in Cabo San Lucas.
Cancellation exposure is low for the room, free until December 21 and paid at the property, and unknown for the airfare because I did not read the fare rules.
The best alternative
The strongest alternative is the same room with United nonstop out of San Francisco: USD 1,060 per person from United's site, a total of about USD 7,872. It saves about four hours of flying in total (about 1.5 hours out and 2.3 back) and costs about USD 896 more, which puts it USD 872 over your ceiling, so I rate it a weak fit unless a nonstop round trip for two with bags turns up near USD 1,470. The early December 19 departure is possible, but Oakland fares for it start at USD 720 per person on a two-stop outbound and USD 1,011 on a nonstop one, plus four more hotel nights.
What to check next
1. Price Oakland to San Jose del Cabo on southwest.com for two, with bags. A total near USD 1,447 keeps the trip near USD 6,976; a price near Alaska's USD 995 per person makes it a weak fit. 2. Read both US visa stamp expiry dates. An expired stamp means a consular visa appointment before booking. 3. Confirm the Hyatt Place total and cancellation on the Booking.com checkout page or hyatt.com. 4. Ask for January 2 whale tour prices and pickup, and for New Year's Eve menus. 5. Get one rental-car quote with Mexican insurance; if five days costs under about USD 350 it beats my taxi budget.
The workings behind the memo
Entry And Visa Lead Time
For an Indian passport holder. US re-entry is user-attested, not verified.
| Entry route | other: Mexican consulate in San Francisco: a valid, unexpired US visa waives the Mexican tourist and transit visa; present the visa with the passport, and both must be valid for the entire stay. Nationality-specific eligibility for an Indian passport holder rests on valid US visa stamps (user-attested valid through Jan 5, not verified). An expired stamp with only status papers (EAD, I-797A, Advance Parole, I-20, DS-2019) is not accepted. Admission is never guaranteed. |
|---|---|
| Lead time | 0 days |
| Last safe application date | Not applicable or unknown |
| Feasible before departure | Yes |
| US visa dependency | Depends entirely on the US visa: valid unexpired US visa stamps for both travelers through the stay (user-attested valid through Jan 5, not verified). Without them a Mexican visa application is needed and its lead time was not researched. |
| Transit | The Southwest itinerary connects in Santa Ana and San Diego (and the nonstop alternative has no connection), so no foreign transit rules apply. |
| Fees | No Mexican visa fee for this route on the consular page; a Mexican airport use fee (TUA) may appear separately on some tickets, as Skyscanner notes. |
| Where to apply | Not needed for this route. If a US stamp turns out expired: Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco, appointment through MiConsulado at citas.sre.gob.mx. |
| Application steps |
|
| Documents to prepare |
|
| Next action | Verify each US stamp's expiry date; travel.state.gov would not load for re-entry confirmation (HTTP 403), so the user must check US re-entry sources. |
Options And Value
Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.
Option 1: Los Cabos, Mexico
A slow, one-base beach and gallery-town holiday: San Jose del Cabo for colonial plaza, galleries, farm-to-table dinners and swimmable coves, with day trips to Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos and a whale-watching morning in peak season. This build takes the cheapest sourced airfare.
Total about USD 6,976 leaves about USD 24 under the firm USD 7,000 ceiling only if the Southwest fare and the assumed bag and tax figures hold; one stop each way (about 6.5 hours door to door out, 8 to 9 back); no winter scenery; quiet nightlife.
Party cost: USD 6,976.29. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T17:02:05Z.

Assumptions: The USD 1,267 is the Skyscanner page total for two with taxes and charges; Southwest.com direct would not load a fare list, so it is not reproduced airline-direct; the USD 45 first-bag fee is the posted US mainland schedule (tickets on or after April 9, 2026) because no Mexico-specific schedule was read; one carry-on and one personal item are free; Mexican airport use fee may be shown separately by some providers; return Jan 5 arrives 8:25 PM. Planning range: USD 1,242 to 2,170. Low is the Alaska-branded listing of the same Southwest flights at USD 621 pp with carry-on only (USD 1,242). High is Alaska airline-direct OAK to SJD at USD 995 pp (about USD 1,990) plus USD 180 bags (USD 2,170) if the Southwest fare cannot be booked. Fares move daily; the Southwest listing at USD 634 against 995 on the airline-direct alternative is the biggest unknown in the trip. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/travel-fees.html · https://www.southwest.com/air/booking/select-depart.html?departureDate=2026-12-23 · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.alaskaair.com/search/results |
| Hotels | 2,374 | partly observed | Booking.com Hyatt Place Los Cabos, King Room with Sofa Bed, Dec 23 to Jan 5 (13 nights), 2 adults: USD 1,935 listed price, breakfast included, free cancellation before Dec 21. The page states 16% VAT, 4% tax and a USD 4 per night environmental fee are excluded: 1,935 x 0.20 = 387.00 tax, 13 x 4 = 52.00 fee, adjustments USD 439.00, total USD 2,374.00 for 13 nights (about USD 182.62 a night). Assumptions: Taxes are computed from the exclusions the property page states, not read as a final total; rate shown for a free-cancellation, pay-later booking (cancel before Dec 21, pay from Dec 19); the Hyatt.com direct page returned an error so the rate is not reproduced on the hotel site; the Hampton Inn direct page showed USD 128 a night average with breakfast, tax treatment not stated. Planning range: USD 924.4 to 2,783.2. Low is Santa Maria del Cabo (8.0) at USD 727 on the Booking search card plus the same 20% tax and USD 52 fee assumed (USD 924.40); high is the Hyatt flexible pay-at-property rate USD 2,276 plus 20% and USD 52 (USD 2,783.20). | Meals | 1,570 | estimate | Dec 23 arrival dinner at the hotel, USD 60 assumed = USD 60.00 + 9 ordinary dinners for two at USD 80 (Numbeo mid-range three-course meal for two MXN 900 = USD 49 plus drinks; the Baja Pass guide puts mains at USD 15-35) = USD 720.00 + Dec 24 Christmas Eve dinner, USD 120 assumed = USD 120.00 + Dec 28 light downtown evening, USD 40 assumed (the Flora Farms lunch is the big meal that day) = USD 40.00 + Dec 31 New Year set-menu dinner, USD 180 assumed (no dated menu found; the tourism page is dated 2019) = USD 180.00 + Dec 28 Flora Farms lunch, USD 70 assumed = USD 70.00 + 11 other lunches for two at USD 30 (inexpensive meal MXN 190 = USD 10.35 each, beach-cove lunches higher) = USD 330.00 + water, snacks and market food, USD 50 = USD 50.00 = USD 1570.00. Breakfast is included in the hotel rate, so it is not budgeted. Assumptions: Numbeo crowd-sourced Cabo San Lucas prices converted at MXN 18.3614 per USD (open.er-api, 2026-10-14) with a destination-restaurant uplift; no dated menu was read for any named restaurant; Christmas Eve and New Year prices are assumptions; tip and service not itemized. Planning range: USD 1,055 to 2,270. Low = arrival dinner 40 + 9 dinners x 55 (495) + Dec 24 80 + Dec 28 evening 30 + Dec 31 120 + Flora lunch 60 + 11 lunches x 20 (220) + 10 water = USD 1,055; high = arrival 80 + 9 dinners x 120 (1,080) + Dec 24 170 + Dec 28 evening 60 + Dec 31 250 + Flora 90 + 11 lunches x 40 (440) + 100 snacks = USD 2,270. Los Cabos is not cheap by Mexican standards; this is the line most affected by personal taste. |
| Ground transport | 920.8 | estimate | SJD airport to San Jose del Cabo hotel and back, 2 taxi rides at USD 75 (official kiosk Zone 1 USD 65-85) = USD 150.00 + three beach days (Chileno Bay / Acapulquito / Palmilla corridor), 3 round trips at USD 50 assumed (Zone 3 airport rate USD 75-95 scaled to the shorter hop) = USD 150.00 + Jan 2 Cabo San Lucas round trip, 2 x USD 80 assumed (Zone 4 airport rate USD 90-115 scaled to the downtown hop) = USD 160.00 + Dec 29 Todos Santos private driver, USD 250 assumed (the rate card lists Todos Santos as "quote on request") = USD 250.00 + 14 short San Jose del Cabo taxi rides (downtown, estuary, dinners, New Year) at USD 12.20 (Numbeo taxi start MXN 80 plus about 1.6 miles at MXN 90 = MXN 224 at MXN 18.3614 per USD) = USD 170.80 + Flora Farms lunch round trip, 2 x USD 20 assumed = USD 40.00 = USD 920.80. Assumptions: The Mexican airport use fee (TUA) and any extra bag fees are not itemized and are left to the reserve line. No rental car priced: the Skyscanner car cards (USD 9-15 a day) exclude Mexican mandatory insurance and were not read at dated rates; airport taxi bands come from a private operator page quoting the official sindicato zones; the other taxi fares are assumptions scaled from those bands; Uber and DiDi availability at the airport and in town was not verified; holiday surcharges not priced. Planning range: USD 670.8 to 1,200. Low = USD 920.80 less the Todos Santos driver (250) = USD 670.80; high = the USD 920.80 basket x 1.3 for holiday demand = USD 1,197, rounded up to USD 1,200. The Stay guide says a car is essentially required for the beaches, so a rental car could beat this taxi basket; that was not priced. |
| Activities | 218 | estimate | Shared whale-watching tour for two at USD 100 each (livingincabo guide range USD 80-120) = USD 200.00, plus El Arco water taxi at USD 9 each (guide range USD 8-10 or MXN 150-200) = USD 18.00; total USD 218.00. Free: Mission San Jose del Cabo, gallery district, Estero San Jose, public beaches. Assumptions: Operator prices are guide ranges, not dated quotes; no whale tour was found on a booking page; the sunset cruise and snorkel rentals are not budgeted because no source was read; whale sightings are not guaranteed. Planning range: USD 160 to 258. Low is a USD 80 per person whale tour with no water taxi; high is USD 120 per person plus the water taxi (USD 258). A private charter (guide range USD 150-250 per boat is quoted for private charters) or a Magdalena Bay day (USD 300-600 per person) would add materially and is excluded. |
| Insurance and contingency | 446.49 | estimate | Travel-insurance reference USD 120 (assumed placeholder, no quote read) + 5% reserve on the base of the other five lines. Base USD 6,529.80 x 0.05 = USD 326.49; total USD 446.49. Assumptions: No insurance quote was read; the reserve covers fare movement, bag fees and tax differences and is not an observed premium. Planning range: USD 120 to 772.98. Low is the USD 120 placeholder alone; high is 10% of the point-estimate base plus the placeholder (not recomputed on the high-case lines). If Southwest direct bag fees or the hotel tax differ from the assumptions, this line absorbs it. |

Option 2: Los Cabos, Mexico
A slow, one-base beach and gallery-town holiday: San Jose del Cabo for colonial plaza, galleries, farm-to-table dinners and swimmable coves, with day trips to Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos and a whale-watching morning in peak season. This build pays for the nonstop flight from San Francisco.
Total about USD 7,872 is about USD 872 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling; saves about 4 hours of flying in total (about 1.5 hours out, 2.3 back).
Party cost: USD 7,871.94. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T17:02:05Z.

| Flights | 2,300 | partly observed | United airline-direct SFO to SJD Dec 23 to Jan 5: nonstop UA 1881 (SFO 11:00 AM to SJD 3:12 PM, 3h12) from USD 1,060 pp round trip x 2 = USD 2,120.00 + 4 checked bags assumed at USD 45 = USD 180.00 adjustment; total USD 2,300.00. The same nonstop trip is USD 1,076 pp (USD 2,152 for two) on Alaska via Skyscanner. Assumptions: United "from" fare for the lowest fare family; the return leg, fare brand and bag terms were not opened; the USD 45 bag fee is Southwest's posted mainland rate used as a stand-in because no United or Alaska bag page rendered; Alaska direct for SFO was not read. Planning range: USD 2,052 to 2,550. Low is United one-stop via LAX at USD 1,026 pp with carry-on only (USD 2,052); high is the United 8:54 AM nonstop at USD 1,185 pp plus bags (USD 2,550). The nonstop saves about 1.5 hours outbound (3h12 versus 4h45) and 2.3 hours on the return (3h22 versus 5h40), about 4 hours in total. Skyscanner lists the United 8:54 AM nonstop at USD 1,231 pp versus USD 1,185 pp on united.com, so the high case could be about USD 92 higher. https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/travel-fees.html · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.alaskaair.com/search/results · https://www.southwest.com/air/booking/select-depart.html?departureDate=2026-12-23 |
Other properties inherit the Hyatt tax structure only by assumption. |
| Insurance and contingency | 489.14 | estimate | Travel-insurance reference USD 120 (assumed placeholder, no quote read) + 5% reserve on the base of the other five lines. Base USD 7,382.80 x 0.05 = USD 369.14; total USD 489.14. Assumptions: No insurance quote was read; the reserve covers fare movement, bag fees and tax differences and is not an observed premium. Planning range: USD 120 to 858.28. Low is the USD 120 placeholder alone; high is 10% of the point-estimate base plus the placeholder (not recomputed on the high-case lines). If Southwest direct bag fees or the hotel tax differ from the assumptions, this line absorbs it. |
Flight Choice

Decision summary
The preferred build flies Oakland to San Jose del Cabo on Southwest with one stop each way (USD 634 per person on Skyscanner, USD 1,267 for two), stays 13 nights at Hyatt Place Los Cabos (USD 1,935 plus 20% VAT and tax plus USD 52 in environmental fees, USD 2,374, breakfast included) and prices meals, taxis and tours from guides and Numbeo. That totals USD 6,976.29; the realistic range is USD 4,172 to 9,454, and airfare and hotel tax are the swing items. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/hotel/mx/hyatt-place-san-jose-del-cabo.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.alaskaair.com/search/results
The same stay with United nonstop from San Francisco (USD 1,060 per person from the airline site) totals USD 7,871.94, about USD 872 over the ceiling, so I rate it weak on cost. No Mexican visa is needed if each traveler holds a valid, unexpired US visa, per the San Francisco consulate general rule (it does not name Indian passports); that rests on your own statement that both stamps are valid through Jan 5. https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/sanfrancisco/index.php/servicios-para-extranjeros · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Entry and transit
The Mexican consulate in San Francisco says holders of a valid and unexpired US visa do not need a visa to enter Mexico for tourism, business or transit, and must carry the visa with the passport; both must be valid for the entire stay. The consulate states the rule for foreign nationals generally and does not name Indian passports, and the INM list of nationalities that need a visa was not read for India, so I treat Indian-passport eligibility as following the general US-visa rule, not as separately confirmed. An expired US visa with only status papers (EAD, I-797A, Advance Parole, I-20, DS-2019) is not accepted and needs a Mexican visa from the consulate. https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/sanfrancisco/index.php/servicios-para-extranjeros
Mexico also requires a Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) at entry; the INM page describes the form and its passport and unexpired-visa conditions. Entry is never guaranteed even with a valid visa, and the airline may check documents before boarding. Both Southwest legs connect through San Diego or Santa Ana, so there is no foreign transit. https://www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud.html · https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/sanfrancisco/index.php/servicios-para-extranjeros · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Mexico

Climate and weather
Visit Los Cabos says December through February bring days around 75 F, about 300 sunny days a year, and the whale season; swimwear and a light sweater for evenings is the packing advice. The same board warns that some beaches have rough surf, rip currents and undertows, and that green flags mean safe water while red or black mean stay out, so sea state, not air temperature, decides beach days. https://www.visitloscabos.travel/plan/useful-information/weather/ · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/things-to-do/beaches/swimming-and-safety/
The Sea of Cortez side concentrates humpbacks, and the Pacific side (Todos Santos, Magdalena Bay) is rougher; Todos Santos beaches are described as better for experienced surfers than casual swimmers. This is why the plan uses the Chileno and Acapulquito coves and a pool-and-beach hotel rather than Pacific beaches. https://livingincabo.com/blog/whale-watching-cabo-guide · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/places-to-visit/todos-santos/ · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/things-to-do/beaches/swimming-and-safety/

Experiences and closures
San Jose del Cabo grew around a mission founded in 1730 on the west bank of the Rio San Jose beside an estuary; the tourism board calls it a cultural oasis with a gallery district, Thursday Art Walks from November through June, and restaurants such as Don Sanchez, Humo and Flora Farms. Dec 24 and Dec 31 are Thursdays, but whether the Art Walk runs on those holiday nights was not confirmed. https://www.visitloscabos.travel/places-to-visit/san-jose-del-cabo/ · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jos%C3%A9_del_Cabo · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/events/annual-events/san-jose-del-cabo-art-walk/
Whale watching runs December to April, with January and February the highest-encounter months and shared tours at USD 80 to 120 per person; the board warns tours fill quickly. The New Year page says hotels and restaurants prepare special menus, but the page is dated 2019, so I would not trust a venue, price or event until a restaurant confirms it. https://www.visitloscabos.travel/things-to-do/tours-and-activities/whale-watching/ · https://livingincabo.com/blog/whale-watching-cabo-guide · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/events/annual-events/new-years/
Todos Santos is a Pueblo Magico founded in 1723 by Jesuit missionaries, about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, and Cabo Pulmo is a protected marine park about two hours from San Jose del Cabo and part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing. https://www.visitloscabos.travel/places-to-visit/todos-santos/ · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todos_Santos,_Baja_California_Sur · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/places-to-visit/cabo-pulmo/ · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabo_Pulmo_National_Park

Neighborhoods and lodging
Three independent guides agree: Cabo San Lucas is loud and marina-centered, San Jose del Cabo is slower with a colonial center, galleries and farm-to-table dining, and nightlife there is limited and quiet after 10 PM. One guide says first-timers who plan to do many boat activities are happier in Cabo San Lucas, because nearly all tours depart from its marina; another says a car is essentially required in San Jose because the best beaches and restaurants are outside the walkable core. https://staywithstay.com/blog/cabo-san-lucas-vs-san-jose-del-cabo/ · https://cabo.la/blog/cabo-san-lucas-vs-san-josa-del-cabo-which-to-stay · https://www.bajapass.com/blog/cabo-san-lucas-vs-san-jose-del-cabo

Transport and travel fatigue
Skyscanner lists Southwest from Oakland at 7:05 AM to San Jose del Cabo at 12:50 PM via Santa Ana and back at 3:45 PM via San Diego landing in Oakland at 8:25 PM, well inside the user-attested 24-hour cap. The cheaper tiles (USD 804 to 812 per person) return overnight with 18 to 20 hour trips and are rejected on fatigue. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD
The official airport taxi zones for 2026 are USD 65-85 to San Jose del Cabo, USD 75-95 to the Tourist Corridor and USD 90-115 to Cabo San Lucas, paid at the kiosk. The tourism board lists authorized taxis, rental cars and an urban bus (Ruta del Desierto) between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas. I priced taxis; a rental car was not priced. https://caboairportstransportation.com/en/cabo-airport-taxi-rates-comparison · https://www.visitloscabos.travel/plan/transportation/

Budget and value
Cost lines: flights USD 1,447 (two Southwest fares plus four estimated bag fees), hotel USD 2,374, meals USD 1,570, ground transport USD 921, activities USD 218, insurance reference plus 5% reserve USD 446.49. Only flights and the hotel are read from pages; the rest are estimates built from Numbeo, guide ranges and the airport taxi rate card. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/hotel/mx/hyatt-place-san-jose-del-cabo.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Cabo-San-Lucas · https://caboairportstransportation.com/en/cabo-airport-taxi-rates-comparison · https://livingincabo.com/blog/whale-watching-cabo-guide
Southwest.com would not return a fare list after two attempts, so the USD 634 per person Skyscanner listing is not reproduced airline-direct; Alaska direct shows OAK to SJD from USD 995 per person, which would push the total to about USD 7,735. Southwest charges USD 45 for a first checked bag on its posted mainland schedule; no Mexico-specific schedule was read. https://www.alaskaair.com/search/results · https://www.southwest.com/air/booking/select-depart.html?departureDate=2026-12-23 · https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/travel-fees.html

Risks and cancellation
The Hyatt Place rate shows free cancellation before December 21, 2026 with nothing to pay until December 19; the flexible pay-at-property rate (USD 2,276 before tax) cancels before December 22. Airfare cancellation terms depend on the fare brand and were not read, and Southwest Basic and Choice fares charge for checked bags. https://www.booking.com/hotel/mx/hyatt-place-san-jose-del-cabo.html?checkin=2026-12-23&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/travel-fees.html
Beach safety follows flag colors, and the Pacific-side beaches are for experienced swimmers. Whale sightings are not guaranteed and tours fill quickly in season. Alternatives and pushback
Candidate 2 flies United UA 1881 nonstop (from USD 1,060 per person on United) and totals USD 7,871.94. The Dec 19 early window on Skyscanner is USD 720 per person on a two-stop outbound and USD 1,011 on a nonstop outbound; adding it to the base case is a derived estimate of about USD 1,466 more (2 x USD 86 more airfare, 4 more Hyatt nights at USD 182.62, 4 more days of meals at USD 121 a day and an assumed USD 80 of taxis), which would put the trip about USD 1,442 over the ceiling, so I would only use it if the extra days are wanted. San Jose airport (SJC) fares were USD 947 per person at best with a one-stop return. https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/sjd/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/sjd/261223/270105/?currency=USD
The strongest case against Los Cabos is that it offers no winter scenery, is quiet at night, and the Bajapass guide says activity-heavy first-timers are happier based in Cabo San Lucas; a Cabo San Lucas base would be louder and tours depart from its marina. Staying in San Jose is a deliberate choice for slow evenings. https://www.bajapass.com/blog/cabo-san-lucas-vs-san-jose-del-cabo · https://staywithstay.com/blog/cabo-san-lucas-vs-san-jose-del-cabo/

Provisional Itinerary
Itinerary follows Option 1: Los Cabos, Mexico.
Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · Oakland to San Jose del Cabo
Southwest 7:05 AM from Oakland via Santa Ana to San Jose del Cabo at 12:50 PM; taxi to the hotel, check in and have a quiet first evening.
Outbound travel day: an estimated 6.5 hours door to door (about 1.5 hours of airport margin, a 4h45 flight and a roughly 20-minute taxi) with a stop, arriving mid-afternoon with time only for a taxi, check-in and dinner.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 1 of 13)
Transfer: Airport kiosk taxi, 15 to 20 minutes, about USD 75 (official zone USD 65 to 85).
Weather alternative: Travel day; if the flight is late take dinner at the hotel.

Morning at the hotel breakfast and beach, a late afternoon walk through the plaza and mission, then the gallery district before a Christmas Eve dinner downtown (a Thursday, so ask about the Art Walk).
Mision San Jose del Cabo and Plaza Mijares
Why it matters: The mission was founded in 1730 beside the Rio San Jose estuary and anchors a downtown the tourism board calls a cultural oasis of whitewashed colonial buildings and cobblestone streets.
Why this visit: It is the quickest way to feel why San Jose is the older, slower sister of Cabo San Lucas, and it sits a short walk from the galleries.
Time: 1 hour. Walk the plaza and the church exterior; holiday church hours were not found, so treat going inside as a bonus.
Cost basis: Free.
Gallery District and Thursday Art Walk
Why it matters: A four-block run of galleries, boutiques and restaurants that the tourism board calls an Art District, with a weekly Thursday evening Art Walk from November through June.
Why this visit: Food and culture is a stated priority and this is the densest concentration of it; Dec 24 and Dec 31 fall on Thursdays.
Time: 2 to 3 hours. Go from late afternoon; whether the Art Walk runs on Dec 24 and Dec 31 is unconfirmed, so ask a gallery or the hotel first.
Cost basis: Free to browse; purchases extra.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 2 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi to downtown, about 10 to 15 minutes, USD 12; walkable once there.
Weather alternative: If venues are closed take a long indoor lunch and pool time; confirm hours first.
Day 3 · 2026-12-25 · Chileno Bay and Playa Acapulquito
A cove day: late morning to Chileno Bay for a swim and snorkel, a beach lunch and an hour at Acapulquito before a quiet Christmas dinner.
Chileno Bay beach
Why it matters: A calm cove in the Tourist Corridor at km 14.5 that the tourism board names among beaches with generally placid, swimmable water.
Why this visit: You asked for a beach; this is where swimming and snorkeling are safest, unlike the surf-battered Pacific beaches.
Time: 3 to 4 hours. Taxi from San Jose about USD 50 round trip assumed; check the beach flag color on arrival and ask the driver for a pickup time.
Cost basis: About USD 50 in taxis for two.
Playa Acapulquito
Why it matters: A beach at the Cabo Surf Hotel that the tourism board lists with Chileno as an inviting, generally calm stretch up the corridor.
Why this visit: It gives a second cove option if Chileno is crowded on a holiday and a place to watch surfers.
Time: 1 to 2 hours. Same taxi as Chileno; surf can be stronger here, so check flags.
Cost basis: Included in the taxi fare.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 3 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi 15 to 20 minutes, about USD 50 round trip.
Weather alternative: If flags are red or black, stay at the hotel pool and walk only the nearest beach.

A slow morning at the estuary, an afternoon at the pool and an early dinner.
Estero San Jose and Rio San Jose
Why it matters: The estuary is the largest body of fresh water in Baja California Sur, fed by a river that runs largely underground for about 24 miles from the Sierra de la Laguna; the 1730 mission was founded on its bank.
Why this visit: It is a quiet, free morning walk that explains why the town grew here and gives a bird-and-mangrove contrast to the beaches.
Time: 2 hours. Taxi from the hotel about USD 12; go early before the sun is strong.
Cost basis: Free.
Hotel pool and breakfast buffet
Why it matters: The Hyatt Place rate includes a buffet breakfast that guests call better than similar hotels, plus an outdoor pool.
Why this visit: A deliberate rest day is part of a 13-night single-base trip; most of the cost is the room, so use it.
Time: Half a day. No booking; breakfast is included in the rate.
Cost basis: Included in the room rate.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 4 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi to the estuary about USD 12 each way.
Weather alternative: Rain is unlikely; if the estuary is wet, stay at the hotel.

A second cove day or rest: beach morning near the hotel, a long lunch and an afternoon off.
Hyatt Place beach and sunrise walk
Why it matters: The hotel is about 984 feet (property page) from a beach that guest reviews describe as good for sunrise and sunset walks.
Why this visit: A no-transport morning keeps the pace slow on a day without plans.
Time: 1 to 2 hours. Walk from the hotel; flags still apply.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 5 of 13)
Transfer: No taxi needed.
Weather alternative: Pool and hotel restaurant if the surf is up.

A food day: a long lunch at Flora Farms in the foothills and a quiet dinner downtown.
Flora Farms lunch
Why it matters: Flora Farms is a 25-acre organic working farm in the Sierra de la Laguna foothills slightly north of San Jose del Cabo whose restaurant defined farm-to-table dining locally, per the tourism board.
Why this visit: It is the clearest food-and-culture stop for a quiet-town trip and works as a long lunch.
Time: 2 to 3 hours. Taxi from the hotel; book through the restaurant site and confirm holiday hours.
Cost basis: About USD 70 for two at lunch; Dec 28 is budgeted as one USD 30 lunch plus a light evening, so about USD 40 of this comes out of the USD 80 dinner allowance for that day.
Light downtown evening (Don Sanchez bar or a taqueria)
Why it matters: Don Sanchez is the tourism board's example of refined regional cuisine in the historic downtown.
Why this visit: After a big farm lunch a light evening keeps the food day affordable.
Time: 1 to 2 hours. Taxi about USD 12 each way; no booking for a light bite.
Cost basis: About USD 40 for two, within the meals line.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 6 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi to Flora Farms about USD 20 each way (assumed).
Weather alternative: Flora Farms has covered seating; if it is closed use a downtown restaurant.
Day 7 · 2026-12-29 · Todos Santos day trip
A private driver takes you north to the Pueblo Magico: stroll the main plaza, mission and galleries, lunch and a stop at the Hotel California before returning for dinner.
Todos Santos historic center and Hotel California
Why it matters: Todos Santos is a Pueblo Magico founded in 1723 by Jesuit missionaries, about an hour north of Cabo San Lucas, known for its art, microclimate and the Hotel California on its main street.
Why this visit: It is the best culture day trip and a contrast to the resort corridor.
Time: 4 to 5 hours on site. A private driver about USD 250 is assumed; the airport rate card lists Todos Santos as quote on request; Pacific beaches there are for experienced swimmers only.
Cost basis: About USD 250 for the driver; entries and meals extra.
Todos Santos beaches viewpoint stop
Why it matters: Todos Santos beaches such as Los Cerritos are known for powerful Pacific swells and are better for surfers than casual swimmers.
Why this visit: A short look at the Pacific side shows why you swim in the cove instead.
Time: 30 minutes. Look only; do not swim without a local guide.
Cost basis: Free.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 7 of 13)
Transfer: Private driver about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, about USD 250 assumed.
Weather alternative: Mostly indoors and in shade; if it rains, spend the day in galleries and cafes.

A beach morning, an afternoon rest, and a set-menu New Year dinner downtown (also a Thursday, so check the Art Walk) with the taxi home booked in advance.
New Year's Eve set-menu dinner
Why it matters: The tourism board says hotels and restaurants in San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas prepare special menus for the night, though its page is dated 2019.
Why this visit: A single long dinner is the right way to see in the new year in a quiet town.
Time: 2 hours. Book ahead for holiday dates; confirm hours and any set menu.
Cost basis: About USD 80 to 180 for two, within the meals line.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 9 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi to the beach about USD 50 round trip; taxi to dinner and back about USD 24.
Weather alternative: Hotel dinner if no table can be found.

The whale day: a morning shared whale tour from the marina, then a water taxi to El Arco and Lover's Beach and a lunch on Medano before the taxi home.
Shared whale-watching tour from Cabo San Lucas
Why it matters: Humpbacks and gray whales migrate to the warm waters off Los Cabos from December to April, and January and February have the highest encounter rates.
Why this visit: Nature is a stated preference and this is the best nature experience of the trip; the first days of January are early peak.
Time: 2 to 3 hours. Book a morning departure from the marina; tours fill quickly in season and most leave from Cabo San Lucas; taxi about USD 160 round trip assumed.
Cost basis: About USD 200 for two (guide range USD 80 to 120 each).
El Arco and Lover's Beach by water taxi
Why it matters: The Arch is a granite formation at the southern tip of the peninsula where the Pacific meets the Gulf of California; the tourism board names Lover's Beach near it among the protected swimming spots.
Why this visit: It is the postcard sight of Los Cabos and is worth one afternoon after the whale tour since the boats leave the same marina.
Time: 2 hours. Water taxi from the marina pier at about MXN 150 to 200 (USD 8 to 10) each per the Stay guide; the sea can be rough on windy days.
Cost basis: About USD 18 for two.
Medano Beach and marina lunch
Why it matters: Medano Beach inside Cabo San Lucas bay is the tourism board's example of a protected swimmable beach, with the marina strip beside it.
Why this visit: It is the louder side of Los Cabos; one lunch there shows what you chose not to base in.
Time: 2 hours. Walk from the water taxi pier; expect crowds and loud music at weekends.
Cost basis: About USD 40 for two, assumed within the meals line.
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 11 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi about 30 to 45 minutes each way, about USD 160 round trip assumed.
Weather alternative: If the sea is rough and tours are cancelled use Jan 3 as the backup.

A backup day for the whale tour; otherwise a last cove swim or a long lunch.
Cabo Pulmo reef (backup day)
Why it matters: A protected national marine park about two hours from San Jose del Cabo with the only hard coral reef in the Gulf of California, estimated at about 20,000 years old and part of a UNESCO listing.
Why this visit: If whales do not appear on Jan 2, a snorkel day here is the strongest nature alternative.
Time: Full day. No price was found for a tour or transfer, so it is not budgeted; it is a backup only and the roughly USD 24 of headroom under the ceiling would not cover it.
Cost basis: Not in the USD 6,976 total (no source).
Lodging: Hyatt Place Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo (night 12 of 13)
Transfer: Taxi about USD 50 for a cove day.
Weather alternative: Pool day if tours or the sea are cancelled.

Last day: a late breakfast, a final beach hour, packing and a farewell dinner downtown.

Where To Stay
Mid-range and well-reviewed local picks. Card-benefit status is a lead to check on the Chase Travel portal, which needs your own login; nightly prices here come from public pages and may differ there. Card benefits are upside, never subtracted from cost.
Hyatt Place Los Cabos San Jose del Cabo, Paseo Malecon, 1.6 miles from downtown, about 984 feet from the beach (property page; the search card says 900 feet)
mid range · guest rating 8.7 / 10 (Booking.com, 532 reviews, read 2026-10-14) · about USD 182.62 a night (Booking.com Dec 23 to Jan 5, 2 adults, King Room with Sofa Bed: USD 1,935 + 20% VAT/tax + USD 52 environmental fees = USD 2,374 for 13 nights, read 2026-10-14.)
The only property I could price with taxes spelled out: breakfast buffet included, free cancellation before Dec 21, pool, airport shuttle and a short walk to a beach; guests praise beds and breakfast.
Chase Travel status unverified. The public Chase Edit page features no Los Cabos property in its visible featured list (it showed a sign-in prompt and I did not sign in), and the third-party Edit list names only luxury Los Cabos resorts; check the Chase Travel portal yourself.
MariaMar Suites San Jose del Cabo, 2.6 miles from downtown, about 1,700 feet from the beach
mid range · guest rating 8.7 / 10 (Booking.com, 510 reviews, read 2026-10-14) · about USD 115.78 a night (Booking.com 13-night card price USD 1,211 for the Standard Suite with Balcony and Sea View; 20% VAT/tax and USD 4 a night added by assumption from the Hyatt Place exclusions: 1,211 x 1.2 + 52 = USD 1,505.20.)
A king-bed suite with balcony and sea view and breakfast included at about USD 869 less than Hyatt Place for 13 nights on the same assumed-tax basis (USD 724 less before tax and fees); the trade is 2.6 miles from downtown and "1 left at this price".

Marisol Hotel Boutique San Jose del Cabo, 1.5 miles from downtown, about 650 feet from the beach
local boutique · guest rating 9.2 / 10 (Booking.com, 397 reviews, read 2026-10-14) · about USD 222.4 a night (Booking.com 13-night card price USD 2,366 for the Deluxe Studio; 20% VAT/tax and USD 4 a night added by assumption from the Hyatt Place exclusions: 2,366 x 1.2 + 52 = USD 2,891.20.)
The best-rated stay on the Booking search (9.2) and an independent property with a 1,076 sq ft studio suite, free cancellation and pay-at-property; the price is about USD 520 above Hyatt Place for 13 nights after the same assumed tax.
Chase Travel status unverified. No public Chase page lists this property; check the Chase Travel portal yourself.
Santa Maria del Cabo San Jose del Cabo, 1.4 miles from downtown, about 1,650 feet from the beach
mid range · guest rating 8 / 10 (Booking.com, 578 reviews, read 2026-10-14) · about USD 71.11 a night (Booking.com 13-night card price USD 727 (original 790); 20% VAT/tax and USD 4 a night added by assumption: 727 x 1.2 + 52 = USD 924.40.)
The cheapest 8+ stay on the Booking search with a balcony queen room and free cancellation; the 8.0 score and "6 left" mean it is the lean-budget fallback rather than the pick.

What Travelers Say
Paraphrase: San Jose del Cabo is quieter, older and anchored by a colonial downtown, galleries and farm-to-table dining, with limited nightlife after 10 PM. The same guide says a car is essentially required because the swimmable beaches and many restaurants are outside the walkable core. This confirms the base choice and complicates the no-rental-car taxi budget.
Paraphrase: San Jose del Cabo is the more authentic, local-feeling town with historic charm, galleries and a slower pace, and more secluded beaches; Cabo San Lucas is the lively resort hub. This supports choosing San Jose for slow evenings.
Paraphrase: nearly all paid activities, such as boat trips, snorkeling and whale watching, run out of Cabo San Lucas, so activity-heavy first-timers are happier based there, and mid-range dinner mains run about USD 15 to 35. This complicates the San Jose choice and is why whale watching is a day trip.
Paraphrase: whale season is December to April with January and February highest, shared tours cost USD 80 to 120 per person, and the Pacific side and Magdalena Bay host gray whale calving. This sets the tour price and the January timing.
Open Flags
- Whether the USD 634-per-person Southwest fare is bookable on southwest.com with the assumed USD 45 first-bag fee (the Southwest page returned no fares).
- Expiry dates of both US visa stamps against Jan 5 2027 (user-attested only).
- The Mexican airport use fee (TUA) and any extra checked-bag fees are not itemized on the Skyscanner fare and are left to the 5% reserve; the Jan 3 Cabo Pulmo backup day is not budgeted.
- Final Hyatt Place taxes and cancellation terms on the hotel site (Hyatt.com returned an error).
- Whale tour prices and availability for Jan 2 or Jan 3, and any holiday closures or New Year menus (the tourism page is dated 2019).
- Whether a rental car would be cheaper than the USD 921 taxi basket.
- source: Flora Farms / Dec 28 meal budget contradicts the meals arithmetic. The Flora Farms visit entry (draft ~line 1591) says Dec 28 is budgeted as one USD 30 lunch plus a light evening, so about USD 40 comes out of an USD 80 dinner allowance, and it also says Flora lunch is about USD 70 for two. The meals calculation (draft line 195 and 532) budgets Flora lunch at USD 70 plus a separate Dec 28 evening at USD 40, with no USD 80 allowance and no USD 30 lunch. Both cannot be true, and the meals total of USD 1,570 is built on the line 195 version.
- source: The headline 'Alaska direct would make the trip about USD 7,735' is not reproducible from the stated inputs. Replacing the flight line (USD 1,447) with Alaska at USD 995 pp x 2 = 1,990 gives 6,976.29 - 1,447 + 1,990 = 7,519.29 before any bags. Adding the same USD 180 bag stand-in gives about 7,699.29. Neither reaches 7,735, and the draft does not show how it got there. The same figure appears in the recommendation (line 766), changeCondition (line 133), decisionImpact (line 915) and the Southwest-direct caveat (line 1272). The conclusion that the trip goes well over the ceiling still holds, but the stated number is wrong.
- coverage: The Flora Farms meal cost is double-described. The meals basket (draft lines 195 and 532) budgets a USD 70 Flora Farms lunch as its own line and separately budgets a USD 40 Dec 28 light downtown evening. The itinerary (line 1591) says Dec 28 is one USD 30 lunch plus a light evening, and that about USD 40 of the Flora lunch 'comes out of the USD 80 dinner allowance'. The dinner allowance is not a separate line in the basket, so the text and the arithmetic disagree about whether the Flora lunch is inside or outside the USD 1,570 meals total. The USD 6,976 preferred total is not changed by a different reading, but the stated basis for the Dec 28 day is inconsistent.
- coverage: The Hyatt Place beach distance appears as 984 feet (property page) in the memo and lodging text, while the Booking.com search card (evidence/booking-sjd-13n.txt line 11) states 900 feet. The draft notes the property-page figure as the source, but the memo does not say the search card gives a different number.
- opportunities: Ground-cost support is weak. The taxi-airport-rates.txt source is a commercial private-transfer seller's marketing page, not an official sindicato tariff, yet it is the basis for the ground-transport line (920.80 USD in the preferred total). The page's own sindicato figures (65-115 USD) are seller-reported and should be checked against an official or airport source before the number is treated as observed.
- opportunities: The preferred itinerary is only about 23.71 USD under the firm 7,000 USD ceiling (6,976.29). Any increase in ground, activity, or meal estimates, or a tax or fee correction, breaches the ceiling. The draft should state this margin and the sensitivity explicitly.
- opportunities: The Hyatt 2,374 USD figure is a derived estimate. The Booking.com page lists 1,935 USD before 16% VAT, 4% tax, and 4 USD per night environmental fee. Breakfast is included on that rate. The flexible rate (2,276) has a different cancellation window. The draft should say which rate and cancellation terms the estimate assumes.
Your Action Plan
Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.
- High priority: Price OAK to SJD on southwest.com for Dec 23 to Jan 5 for two travelers and read the checked-bag fee for Mexico.
Why: The USD 634 per person fare is a Skyscanner listing; the Southwest page did not load a fare list for me and the bag fee I used is the mainland schedule.
How to check: Open southwest.com, select Round-trip OAK to Los Cabos (SJD), Dec 23 to Jan 5, set Passengers to 2 and read the total and "Baggage & optional fees".
Decision impact: If the real total with four bags is near USD 1,447 the trip stays near USD 6,976; if the direct price is closer to Alaska at USD 995 per person the total reaches about USD 7,735 and the verdict becomes weak.
- High priority: Check the expiry date of both US visa stamps and both passports against Jan 5 2027.
Why: Mexico accepts a valid unexpired US visa instead of a Mexican visa only for the whole stay; the dossier relies on user-attested validity.
How to check: Read the "Expiration date" on each US visa foil and the passport validity page.
Decision impact: A stamp expiring before Jan 5 requires a Mexican consular visa appointment at citas.sre.gob.mx before any booking.
- Medium priority: Confirm the Hyatt Place all-in price and cancellation on hyatt.com or the Booking.com checkout screen.
Why: Taxes (16% VAT, 4% tax, USD 4 a night) were computed from stated exclusions and Hyatt.com returned an error.
How to check: Reopen the Booking.com property page for Dec 23 to Jan 5, select the King Room with Sofa Bed and read the final total before payment; try hyatt.com in another session.
Decision impact: A total more than about USD 200 above USD 2,374 pushes the base case toward the ceiling and favors Santa Maria del Cabo or Hampton Inn.
- Medium priority: Request a rate and booking for a shared whale-watching tour for Jan 2 and ask if a hotel pickup in San Jose is included.
Why: Tour prices are guide ranges, whale sightings are not guaranteed and tours fill quickly; most tours leave from the Cabo San Lucas marina.
How to check: Ask Cabo San Lucas marina operators or the Hyatt tour desk for Jan 2 and Jan 3 departures and prices for two.
Decision impact: A tour above about USD 120 per person, or one without pickup, adds to the taxi line and may move the whale day to a Cabo San Lucas overnight.
- Medium priority: Confirm New Year's Eve set menus and the Dec 24 and Dec 31 Art Walk nights with two restaurants and one gallery.
Why: The only tourism page on New Year is dated 2019 and holiday hours were not found.
How to check: Message Don Sanchez, Flora Farms or a downtown gallery for Dec 24 and Dec 31 hours and menu prices.
Decision impact: A set menu above about USD 250 for two raises the meals line; closures shift the dinner plan to hotel restaurants.
- Low priority: Check the Chase Travel portal for Hyatt Place, MariaMar Suites and Marisol Hotel Boutique.
Why: No public Chase page lists mid-range Los Cabos properties and I must not sign in.
How to check: Sign in to your own Chase Travel portal and search San Jose del Cabo for the dates.
Decision impact: Card eligibility is upside only; it changes the choice only if a clearly comparable property is listed.
- Low priority: Get a rental-car quote with Mexican mandatory insurance for 5 days.
Why: A guide says a car is essentially required for beaches; I priced taxis only.
How to check: Request a quote including Mexican third-party liability from an airport rental agency listed by the tourism board.
Decision impact: A 5-day all-in quote under about USD 350 would beat the USD 921 taxi basket and loosen the ceiling.
Limitations And Freshness
Research expires after 30 days; price snapshots become historical after 24 hours. Always recheck current availability. Failed or incomplete checks are not confirmed facts.
- Actual researcher model identity is unverified; configured model is not runtime proof.
- Regular browser canvas used; cookie and login isolation are unknown.
- Southwest.com (the only source of the USD 634 per person Oakland fare) and Hyatt.com returned no rates, so neither was reproduced airline- or hotel-direct; United and Alaska direct pages were read only for outbound-led round-trip per-person fares, without fare brand, bags or the return leg.
- Checked-bag fees use the Southwest US mainland schedule (USD 45 first bag) as a stand-in; Hyatt Place taxes are computed from the exclusions stated on Booking.com (16% VAT, 4% tax, USD 4 a night) and the same structure is assumed for other properties.
- The Skyscanner SJC search was read with the provider check incomplete (5 of 31); Booking.com cards for other properties do not itemize taxes; Hampton Inn direct rates are nightly averages with tax treatment unstated.
- Meals, taxis, Todos Santos driver, whale tour and water taxi prices come from Numbeo, guides and a private airport-transfer rate card, not dated booking pages; no rental car, sunset cruise or snorkel rental was priced.
- The only tourism page on New Year events is dated 2019; Dec 24 and Dec 31 Art Walk operation and holiday opening hours were not confirmed; travel.state.gov returned HTTP 403, so US re-entry was not independently checked.
- Most pages (guides, Wikipedia, Numbeo, tourism board) were read as static HTTP text, not rendered captures; Wikipedia excerpts include raw template text; page text is untrusted data.
