Peru

Peru is conditional on the airfare: the trip costs about USD 6,862 for two only if the agency fare with unknown baggage is real (USD 138 under the firm USD 7,000 ceiling); at the bag-inclusive airline-listed fares it costs about USD 8,670 to 9,170 and does not fit.

Independent reviewProvisional research: independent review evidence is incomplete or not cleared for this draft.
FreshnessHistorical; refresh needed
RecommendationConditional: Food is the strongest fit (Lima has multiple top-ranked restaurants and cheap daily eating) and Machu Picchu is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime sight, at about USD 6,862 for two on the agency fare, but the airline-listed fares push it to about USD 8,700 (United) or 9,200 (LATAM-listed with bags), the highlands are in their rainy season, there is no beach or winter scenery, and altitude and a 13h52 return cost days of energy.
Research confidenceModerate: Exact-date two-traveler flight and hotel snapshots were read on Skyscanner, United and Booking.com within 24 hours and the entry rule comes from a Peruvian consulate page, but LATAM and Alaska direct pages failed, the lowest fare has unknown baggage and many cost lines rely on guides and Numbeo.
Itinerary confidenceModerate: The 14-day plan respects the Dec 25 and Jan 1 holidays, the 5,600-visitor cap on Dec 30-31 and the afternoon-rain pattern and has weather swap days, but holiday opening hours, market days and dated train times were not confirmed.
Price evidencePartly observed: Exact-date two-traveler flight and hotel snapshots were read on Skyscanner, United and Booking.com on 2026-10-14, but the lowest fare is an agency headline with unknown baggage and the LATAM and Alaska direct pages failed; meals, ground, activities and insurance are derived or estimated from guides and Numbeo.

Advisor memo

Peru is a conditional yes at about USD 6,862 for two on the cheap fare, but about USD 8,670 or more with bags.

My recommendation

I would call Peru a conditional yes. A two-base trip, Lima for food and Cusco with one night at Machu Picchu, costs about USD 6,862 for the two of you on the lowest airfare I could read, which is only about USD 138 under your firm USD 7,000 ceiling. That number rests on an agency fare whose baggage terms are unknown and excludes checked bags, so read it as a best case, not a quote. If the fare that is actually bookable is the airline-listed one, the same trip is about USD 8,670 to 9,170, and I would drop it. Entry is simple if both US visa stamps are valid at least six months on arrival (a Peruvian consulate page says Indian passport holders then need no Peruvian visa), so there is no application lead time on that route, but the expiry on each stamp, which I have not seen, decides it. The one thing that would flip my answer is the airfare: if you can find an exact-date fare with a checked bag each at or under about USD 1,414 per person (USD 2,828 for two), the preferred build stays under your ceiling; if the best bag-inclusive fare is USD 2,200 or more per person, choose another destination.

Why this trip fits the two of you

Food and culture carry the most weight in your preferences, and this is where Peru is strongest. Lima eats at every level: the food guide I read says menu del dia lunches run S/12-20 and huariques S/25-45, while tasting menus at Central, Maido and Kjolle are S/700-1,295 per person. Cusco and the Sacred Valley add Inca stone, markets and a December that is green rather than dry. Machu Picchu is the one sight on the list that you cannot get anywhere else.

What it trades away is just as plain. There is no beach and no winter scenery, the highlands are in their rainy season, and Cusco sits at about 3,400 m. Ease of travel is middling: the flights are long, though both directions are under your 24-hour cap (11h50 out, 13h52 back).

How the trip unfolds

Lima, Dec 24-27. You land at 8:10 AM on Christmas Eve, so I keep the first day flat: a coffee and a clifftop walk in Miraflores, then Huaca Pucllana, an adobe pyramid in the middle of the district that costs S/15 each and shows that Lima is older than its Spanish centre. I would stay at Hotel Antigua Miraflores, a 9.3 from 2,144 guests at USD 352 for three nights with breakfast and free cancellation; it is not listed on the public Chase pages I read, so check the portal yourself. Christmas Day is a national holiday, so I plan plazas, the Historic Centre (UNESCO since 1988) and a ceviche lunch rather than interiors; ceviche is a lunch dish and UNESCO recognises it as part of Peru's cuisine. Dec 26 is the food day: a menu del dia lunch and dinner in Barranco, at Kjolle if you can book it. Maido's own site says it opens bookings two months ahead on the first of each month and is closed Sundays, so a December table is unlikely.

Cusco, Dec 27-Jan 4. The 8:00 AM Sky Airline flight lands at 9:25 AM, which gives a full light day at altitude. I would stay at Hostal Corihuasi (9.1 from 1,363 guests, USD 593 for the eight-night block, breakfast and free cancellation) and keep the room through the Aguas Calientes night so the big bag can stay behind; that means one night, about USD 74, is paid and unused. The Tourist Ticket (S/130 each, 10 days) covers the ruins above the city on Dec 28, then Chinchero, Moray and the Maras salt ponds by private taxi on Dec 29: Moray's terraced circles can differ by as much as 15 C from top to bottom, and the salt ponds have been worked since Inca times. LorenziGo, who has been to Cusco in December several times, says the rhythm is bright mornings and heavy afternoons, so I start every outdoor day before 8 AM.

Machu Picchu, Dec 30-31. I would take a taxi to Ollantaytambo on the 30th, see the ruins there (it was Pachacuti's royal estate), then take the train to Aguas Calientes and sleep at Casa Andina Standard (8.8, USD 145). On Dec 31 take the first buses up for an early entry. Tickets are sold on the Ministry of Culture platform; PeruRail says direct purchase started in September 2026 and recommends buying before you travel, and Dec 30-31 are capped at 5,600 visitors. I would then be back in Cusco for New Year's Eve; kimkim says the late-December weeks pull in Peruvian families and tighten bookings, so reserve dinner early.

New Year to departure. Jan 1 is a holiday and a rest day with Tourist Ticket museums if they are open. Jan 2 is Pisac, Jan 3 is a flex day for the South Valley or the Cathedral, and Jan 4 is the 7:55 PM flight to Lima and a night at Wyndham Costa del Sol (USD 125) before the 12:05 PM flight home.

What it will really cost

For two travellers on the preferred build: flights USD 3,301 (the agency fare for the international leg, USD 2,697, plus USD 604 on Sky Airline to Cusco and back), thirteen paid nights (twelve distinct beds) USD 1,215, meals about USD 927, ground transport about USD 790 (mostly the train at about USD 300 and taxis), activities about USD 188 (the Machu Picchu entry is S/163 each) and USD 441 for insurance and a 5 percent reserve. That adds to USD 6,862. The total is a lower bound for the Maras salt ponds, Cusco Cathedral and San Blas, whose entry fees I could not find (allow about S/60 each as an assumption). The ranges matter more than the point: every line at its low end is about USD 4,630 (using a 20h51 outbound that skips Christmas Eve), every line at its high end about USD 10,820.

Which numbers are real: the hotel totals and the Skyscanner and United results are exact-date snapshots from today. Meals, taxis, the train and activities are derived from guides and Numbeo, not from dated booking pages. The one number I distrust is the USD 1,349 flight. The same itinerary listed by LATAM on Skyscanner is USD 2,448 each with bags, United's own page starts at USD 2,210 each, and the LATAM and Alaska direct pages failed on me, so I could not prove the cheap fare is real or what bags it carries. On the lean build at the United fare, with the cheapest decent beds, the total is still USD 7,581.

Value: against Portugal (conditional at about USD 6,977, taken from the earlier Portugal dossier) this costs about the same and gives you Machu Picchu and a better food scene, but it also gives you altitude, rain and a longer flight.

Where this can go wrong

The weather is the most predictable risk. In Cusco's WMO normals December has 114.9 mm of rain and January 145.8 mm, against 5.2 mm in August, and Exploor describes Machu Picchu as often foggy in December. Altitude is the second risk: Cusco is at 3,400 m and the Sacred Valley plateau at 3,300-3,500 m, so the first days are light and you should talk to a clinician about altitude before leaving. The third is holiday friction: Dec 25 and Jan 1 are national holidays and I could not confirm any museum or church hours for them. The fourth is documents: if either US visa stamp expires before about June 24, 2027 you do not qualify for the visa-free route. Who should not choose this trip: anyone who wants a beach, snow, or a short flight.

The best alternative

The strongest competitor is Portugal: about the same cost, one base, a nonstop out and none of the altitude. It loses on Machu Picchu and on how deep the food scene goes. I would switch to Portugal if the only bookable Peru fare is USD 2,200 or more per person, or if either of your US visas fails the six-month test.

What to check next

  • Read the expiry date on both US visa stamps; it must be about June 24, 2027 or later. If either is earlier, the visa-free route is gone and the trip needs a consular visa.
  • Price SFO-LIM, Dec 23-Jan 5, two adults, on the airline websites (LATAM, Delta, Alaska), with the bags included. If the international total with bags is at or under about USD 2,828 for two the preferred build stays under the ceiling; at USD 4,420 (the United floor) it is about USD 8,670.
  • Open tuboleto.cultura.pe and check which Machu Picchu routes and morning slots exist for Dec 31.
  • Look at the PeruRail and IncaRail Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes schedule and fare for Dec 30 and Dec 31 and confirm that a train arrives at least 90 minutes before your entry hour.
  • Ask the hotels to confirm Dec 25 and Jan 1 hours for the museums and restaurants you want, and book dinner on Dec 24 and Dec 31.

The workings behind the memo

Entry And Visa Lead Time

For an Indian passport holder. US re-entry is user-attested, not verified.

Entry routevisa-free: A Peruvian consulate page states that Indian nationals may enter Peru without a visa if they hold a UK, Canada, Australia, Schengen or US visa valid for a minimum of 6 months at the moment of entry. BAL Immigration (2017) and Wikipedia describe the same rule with a stay of up to 180 days in a year; the Peru Travel page says the maximum granted stay is 90 days. For a Dec 24, 2026 arrival the six-month point is 2027-06-24. The Peru Travel page says "The maximum length of stay that the authorities grant is 90 days, which cannot be extended", which differs from the 180-day wording elsewhere; either covers this 12-day stay.
Lead time0 days
Last safe application dateNot applicable or unknown
Feasible before departureUnknown
US visa dependencyThe exemption depends on each traveler holding a US visa valid at least six months on arrival (expiry on or after about 2027-06-24). The user attested valid US visa stamps through the 2027-01-05 return (attested 2026-10-10, not verified), which is a shorter test than the six-month rule, so the stamp expiry dates must be read.
TransitThe priced routings connect only in the United States (Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Houston, Newark); no third-country transit visa applies.
FeesNo visa fee on the exemption route and no Peruvian entry fee found in the sources read; a consular tourist visa fee was not read.
Where to applyNo application is needed on the visa-free route. If a US visa stamp is under six months from the arrival date, apply for a tourist visa at a Peruvian consular section; the gob.pe procedure page lists a Consulado General del Peru in San Francisco and says each application is judged individually.
Application steps
  1. Read the expiry date printed on each traveler's US visa stamp and confirm it is on or after about 2027-06-24.
  2. Check that each passport is valid at least six months beyond the Dec 24 arrival and carry the passport and US visa page.
  3. Keep the onward ticket (the Jan 5 flight home), hotel reservations and funds proof printed or on the phone for the airline desk and for Peruvian immigration.
  4. If a stamp expires too soon, start a tourist-visa request through the Peruvian consular section listed on gob.pe before any bookings.
Documents to prepare
  • Passport valid at least six months beyond arrival
  • US visa valid at least six months on the day of entry
  • Proof of onward or return flight (Jan 5, 2027)
  • Hotel reservations for the stay
  • Proof of funds if asked at immigration
Next actionRead the expiry date on both US visa stamps now and confirm it is on or after about 2027-06-24; if either is earlier, open the gob.pe tourist-visa procedure and the Peruvian Consulate General in San Francisco page for the document list and processing time, which was not published on the page I read.

Options And Value

Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.

Option 1: Peru

Value rating: Conditional

Food is the strongest fit (Lima has multiple top-ranked restaurants and cheap daily eating) and Machu Picchu is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime sight, at about USD 6,862 for two on the agency fare, but the airline-listed fares push it to about USD 8,700 (United) or 9,200 (LATAM-listed with bags), the highlands are in their rainy season, there is no beach or winter scenery, and altitude and a 13h52 return cost days of energy.

Compared with: Versus Switzerland (this repository's Lucerne dossier, about USD 11,500 and not recommended) Peru is about USD 4,670 cheaper (11,528.53 from the Lucerne dossier, carried and not re-read in this run) and richer in food and culture; versus Portugal (conditional at about USD 6,977) it adds Machu Picchu and costs about the same but trades European city comfort and shorter transit for altitude and rain.

What changes this rating: Moves to Strong fit if an airline-direct SFO-LIM fare with a checked bag each is found at or under about USD 1,414 per person (USD 2,828 for two; ceiling arithmetic (F + 604 + 3,120) x 1.05 + 120 <= 7,000) and the Machu Picchu 2-A morning slot on Dec 31 is bookable; falls to Weak fit if the only bookable fare is USD 2,200 per person or more (total near USD 8,700 or above).

Price confidence: Partly observed

Exact-date two-traveler flight and hotel snapshots were read on Skyscanner, United and Booking.com on 2026-10-14, but the lowest fare is an agency headline with unknown baggage and the LATAM and Alaska direct pages failed; meals, ground, activities and insurance are derived or estimated from guides and Numbeo.

A food-and-culture trip with one great ruin: three days eating in Miraflores and Barranco, then a Cusco base at 3,400 m with Sacred Valley day trips, one night at Machu Picchu and New Year's Eve in Cusco, with a nonstop domestic hop each way.

USD 6,862 is only about USD 138 under the USD 7,000 ceiling and only at the agency airfare (airline-listed airfare adds about USD 1,700 to 2,300); it is the Andean rainy season with afternoon storms; Cusco and the Sacred Valley sit at 2,800-3,500 m; the return is a 13h52 via Salt Lake City; no beach and no winter scenery.

Party cost: USD 6,862.1. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T15:55:00Z.

Flights3,301partly observedInternational: Skyscanner SFO-LIM Dec 23-Jan 5, LATAM/Delta one-stop itinerary (out SFO 5:20 PM to LIM 8:10 AM Dec 24, back LIM 12:05 PM via Salt Lake City to SFO 10:57 PM Jan 5), lowest agency provider USD 1,349 pp = 2 x 1,348.50 = USD 2,697 (Justfly, baggage unknown). Domestic: Sky Airline LIM-CUZ round trip Dec 27 (8:00 AM to 9:25 AM) and Jan 4 (7:55 PM to 9:35 PM), USD 302 pp = USD 604. Total 2,697 + 604 = USD 3,301 = 2 x 1,650.50.

Assumptions: Aggregator headline fares with taxes and charges as shown; the Justfly listing states "Carry-on bag info unknown. Checked bag info unknown" and the same itinerary listed by LATAM on Skyscanner is USD 4,895 with both bags, so baggage terms and fare class of the USD 2,697 are unconfirmed; United airline-direct on the same dates starts at USD 4,420 for one-stop Houston routings; LATAM-direct and Alaska-direct pages failed; Sky Airline bag fees (carry-on rules) not read, so domestic travel assumes carry-on only luggage; the Sky Airline fares were read while the provider check was incomplete (7 of 24 providers) and may have moved.

Planning range: USD 2,519 to 5,499. Low is the cheapest Skyscanner itinerary under the 24-hour cap, USD 1,009 pp (USD 2,018 for two; Alaska/LATAM Peru, outbound SFO 9:59 PM via LAX arriving LIM 9:50 PM on Dec 24, 20h51, which loses the Christmas Eve day; return 13h52), plus the USD 251 pp evening Sky Airline fare (USD 501 for two as the page totals it; arrives CUZ 8:35 PM) = USD 2,519; high is the LATAM-listed fare with both bags USD 4,895 plus USD 604. The United airline-direct reading (USD 4,420 for two, one stop through Houston) lies inside that range. The gap of about USD 2,200 is the single largest uncertainty in the trip; fares can move before any purchase.

Hotel breakfasts are included.

Assumptions: Numbeo crowd-sourced Lima prices applied to Cusco as a proxy (Numbeo has no Cusco page); restaurant guide ranges for tasting menus; no dated menu was read for the New Year dinner; Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year menus can cost more; tips and service charges are not itemised; PEN converted at 3.4404 per USD (open.er-api, 2026-10-14; the central-bank rate of 3.437 differs by 0.1 percent).

Planning range: USD 462.15 to 1,563.76. Low is S/1,590 (12 huarique dinners at S/90 for two, 12 lunches at S/30, snacks S/150); high is S/5,380, which swaps the S/400 special dinner for the Maido 12-step menu at S/1,295 pp (S/2,590 for two, from the restaurant site). Reservations for Maido open two months ahead on the first of each month, so a December table may already be gone.

Assumptions: Fares from public guides (Lima airport, Cusco airport, Cusco-Ollantaytambo taxi pages, PeruRail class guide, Consettur bus figure) read 2026-10-14; Expedition fares and the Consettur fare are guide ranges, not dated quotes from PeruRail or IncaRail; the full-day Sacred Valley, Pisac and ruins taxi figures are assumptions scaled from the Cusco-Ollantaytambo quote; Uber surge at Christmas and New Year is not priced; PEN converted at 3.4404 per USD (open.er-api, 2026-10-14; the central-bank rate of 3.437 differs by 0.1 percent).

Planning range: USD 710.07 to 975.07. Low swaps the Expedition train for the cheap end of the guide range (USD 130 pp, saves 40) and trims the Sacred Valley and Pisac taxis by 20 each; high prices the panoramic Vistadome at USD 220 pp (adds 140) and a holiday taxi surcharge of 45. Assumptions: Prices from a restaurant-and-sights guide (Huaca Pucllana), two Cusco tour-operator pages (Tourist Ticket, Qorikancha) and a Machu Picchu ticket guide that cites the Ministry of Culture tariff; none were read on a dated booking page (tuboleto.cultura.pe was not driven); card-processing charges are not included; Cusco Cathedral, Lima churches and catacombs and the Maras salt pans have no sourced price and are excluded; hours on Dec 25 and Jan 1 are not confirmed.

Planning range: USD 170.33 to 250.55. Low drops Huaca Pucllana and Qorikancha (S/586); high adds the Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu route at S/211 pp instead of S/163 (+S/96) and a private Huaca Pucllana guide at S/120 (S/862). If the site cap sells out the 2-A morning slots, a different route or hour is the fallback.

Planning range: USD 120 to 841.05. Low removes the reserve; high adds about USD 400 for checked-bag fees on the domestic flights, a rebooked train or hotel night and altitude medication.

Option 2: Peru

Value rating: Weak fit

Priced on the United airline-direct one-stop fare the trip costs about USD 7,581, roughly USD 581 over the firm ceiling, and the lean beds and meals trade away the comfort that makes a rainy-season highland trip enjoyable.

Compared with: The preferred build on the agency fare (about USD 6,862) is the better version of the same trip; Portugal (conditional, about USD 6,977) fits the ceiling without a fare gamble.

What changes this rating: Becomes Conditional if an exact-date international fare with a checked bag each is bookable at or under about USD 3,860 for two (rounded down from 3,867), or the user raises the ceiling to about USD 7,600 (only the user can; not assumed). Ceiling arithmetic for this lean build: a bookable international fare at or under about USD 3,860 for two keeps it under USD 7,000, because (F + 604 + 2,082) x 1.05 + 120 <= 7,000.

Price confidence: Partly observed

United results and Booking.com totals are exact-date observed snapshots, but the return leg, fare brand and baggage were not opened; the other lines are derived or estimated.

The same route and days priced on the airline-direct fare I could actually read, with the cheapest decent beds and no special meals, to test whether the trip survives if the USD 1,349 agency fare is not real.

Even with the leanest beds and meals the total is about USD 7,581, above the firm USD 7,000 ceiling; the priced United routing lands in Lima at 11:55 PM on Dec 24, so the Christmas Eve day is lost; the B&B near the airport is 2.9 miles away; carry-on-only luggage is assumed; the United fare terms were not opened.

Party cost: USD 7,580.83. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T15:55:00Z.

Flights5,024partly observedInternational: United airline-direct SFO-LIM roundtrip, lowest fare USD 2,210 pp (1 stop Houston; the option that fits this hotel plan leaves SFO 11:59 PM on Dec 23 and lands in Lima 11:55 PM on Dec 24, 20h56, so Christmas Eve day is lost; the Dec 24 hotel night is paid but check-in is after midnight, and one night-time airport taxi at a late premium is unbudgeted) x 2 = USD 4,420; domestic Sky Airline LIM-CUZ USD 302 pp x 2 = 604; total 4,420 + 604 = USD 5,024 = 2 x 2,512.

Assumptions: United results page read 2026-10-14 for the Dec 23 outbound with "From" roundtrip fares; fare brand, bags and the Jan 5 return flight were not opened, so it is a carry-on-only floor of unconfirmed terms; the 5:00 AM and 8:50 AM options at the same or higher fares land in Lima late on Dec 23 and would need an extra Dec 23 hotel night (not budgeted); the return itinerary and time are unread; the Lima airport taxi at about midnight is assumed at the daytime S/115.

Planning range: USD 3,301 to 5,499. Low is the agency fare build (USD 3,301), high is the LATAM-listed fare with both bags plus domestic (USD 5,499); a bag per person on the Basic fare would add to the United floor.

Planning range: USD 561 to 1,215. Low swaps Larco for La Casona Azul (163, shared bathroom) and Inti Punku for Santuario (97): 163 + 256 + 97 + 45 = USD 561; high is the preferred-build set of USD 1,215.

Decision summary

Peru is a conditional yes: Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu cost about USD 6,862 for two on the lowest airfare I could read, only about USD 138 under the firm ceiling, and about USD 8,670 if the airline-listed fare is the real one.

The preferred build (three nights in Miraflores, eight Cusco nights with one night at Machu Picchu, one airport night) prices at USD 6,862.10 for two: USD 3,301 for flights (the USD 1,349-per-person Skyscanner agency fare plus a USD 604 Sky Airline round trip to Cusco), USD 1,215 for thirteen paid nights (twelve distinct beds), and the rest from guide prices, Numbeo and the Machu Picchu tariff. That is under the user-attested firm USD 7,000 ceiling, but the same LATAM/Delta itinerary is listed by LATAM itself on Skyscanner at USD 4,895 for two with bags, and United airline-direct starts at USD 4,420 for one-stop routings through Houston, which would lift the total to about USD 8,670 to 9,170. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/config/16216-2612231720--32115-1-13571-2612240810%7C13571-2701051205--32115-1-16216-2701052257?currency=USD · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/lim/cuz/261227/270104/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-24&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

The lean build I priced on the United airline-direct fare with the cheapest decent beds and no special meals still costs USD 7,580.83, about USD 581 over the ceiling, so the verdict is conditional rather than viable: the preferred build stays under the ceiling only if an exact-date international fare with a checked bag each at or under about USD 2,828 for two (USD 1,414 per person) can be booked, and the lean build only at or under about USD 3,860 for two (about USD 1,930 per person). Entry is visa-free for an Indian passport holder only if each US visa is valid at least six months on arrival (unverified), per a Peruvian consulate page. https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.consulado.pe/es/londres/tramite/Paginas/Visas/Issuance-of-Tourist-Visa.aspx · https://www.bal.com/immigration-news/peru-to-ease-entry-for-some-indian-travelers

Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T16:05:00Z

Entry and transit

No Peruvian visa is needed if each traveler holds a US visa valid at least six months on the day of entry, so the lead time is zero but the six-month condition must be checked on both stamps.

A Peruvian consulate page states "Indian nationals may enter Peru without a visa if they have a UK, Canada, Australia, Schengen or US visa valid for a minimum of 6 months at the moment of entry to Peru"; BAL Immigration reported the 2017 decree allowing up to 180 days in a year, and Wikipedia repeats the 180-day, six-month-validity rule. For a December 24 arrival the six-month point is about June 24, 2027, so each US visa stamp must show an expiry on or after that date; the user-attested validity "through the return date" (Jan 5, 2027) is a shorter test and does not prove it. https://www.consulado.pe/es/londres/tramite/Paginas/Visas/Issuance-of-Tourist-Visa.aspx · https://www.bal.com/immigration-news/peru-to-ease-entry-for-some-indian-travelers · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Peru

If a stamp expires earlier, a tourist visa must be requested from a Peruvian consulate; the gob.pe procedure page lists a Consulado General in San Francisco among its offices, each application is judged individually and no processing time is published on the page I read, so I do not quote a lead time for that fallback. Passport validity of at least six months and proof of onward travel are repeated on the Peru Travel page; that page says the maximum length of stay the authorities grant is 90 days, which cannot be extended (excerpt saved separately). https://www.gob.pe/en/113169-seccion-consular-de-la-embajada-del-peru-en-la-republica-de-la-india-solicitar-visa-de-turista-para-ingresar-al-peru · https://www.peru.travel/useful-data/visa-and-entry-requirements

The priced routings connect only through U.S. airports (Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Houston, Newark), so no third-country transit visa applies. CDC reports no yellow fever vaccine recommendation for travel limited to Lima, Cusco, the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu and no malaria transmission in Lima province, Cusco city or Machu Picchu; the Amazon lowlands are a different matter and are not on this itinerary. I am not a doctor, and altitude illness at 3,400 m is a question for a clinician before travel. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/peru

Climate and weather

Climatology only: Lima is dry, warm and grey-skied; the highlands are in the rainy season with bright mornings and heavy afternoons, so every outdoor day starts early.

Lima (airport normals) has a December mean high of 24.4 C and low of 18.6 C, 0.2 mm of rain, humidity 81 percent and about 130 hours of sun in the month, so the coast is dry but frequently overcast; January is 26.8 C and 20.4 C. For Cusco, the WMO 1991-2020 normals for Granja Kcayra (3,214 m, near the city) give a December mean high of 20.9 C and low of 6.9 C with 114.9 mm of rain, and January 20.2 C and 7.4 C with 145.8 mm, against 5.2 mm in August. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lima · https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/data/oceans/archive/arc0216/0253808/5.5/data/0-data/Region-3-WMO-Normals-9120/Peru/CSV/GranjaKcayra_34001.csv

The traveler sources agree on the daily rhythm: LorenziGo describes bright mornings and clouds by 3:30 PM with rain between 3 and 5 PM and says every serious sightseeing day should start before 8 AM; kimkim and Inkanet say December rain arrives in the afternoon and mornings are often dry; Exploor puts Machu Picchu at about 17 C by day and 8 C at night, often foggy or misty. The Inca Trail stays open in December (it closes in February), and kimkim warns that the Huayna Picchu rock is slippery in the wet. https://lorenzigo.com/cusco-in-december/ · https://www.kimkim.com/c/machu-picchu-in-december-travel-tips-weather-and-more · https://www.inkanetadventure.com/blog/cusco-in-december · https://exploorperu.com/blog/machu-picchu-guide/machu-picchu-weather-december/

Experiences and closures

The big sights are open in the window but timing matters: Dec 25 and Jan 1 are national holidays, Machu Picchu is capped at 5,600 a day on Dec 30 and 31, and every ticket is a timed, name-bound entry.

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel at 2,430 m, planned around 1450 for the Inka Pachakuteq and a UNESCO World Heritage site per the Peru Travel page. Since the 2024 circuit reform there are three circuits and ten routes; four routes (1-C, 1-D, 3-C, 3-D) open only in high season, so which routes are on offer for Dec 31 must be read on the platform. Tickets are sold on the Ministry of Culture platform tuboleto.cultura.pe; PeruRail says direct purchase without prior reservation began in September 2026, payment must be confirmed within 15 minutes, and it recommends buying before travelling. Daily visitors are capped at 5,600 on Dec 30 and 31, 2026 and at 4,500 on ordinary days (excerpts saved in the cap evidence file: the PeruRail section headed Update Visitor Capacity for 2026, which also calls 1 January and 30-31 December high season each year, a Jan 1, 2027 cap is not confirmed, and I do not plan a Machu Picchu visit for Jan 1; the ticket guide cites Ministerial Resolution 000285-2025-MC for the same dates). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machu_Picchu · https://www.peru.travel/en/attractions/machu-picchu · https://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/circuits-and-routes/ · https://www.perurail.com/tickets-to-machu-picchu · https://incatrailreservations.com/travel/machu-picchu-ticket-prices

The foreign-adult entrance is S/152 for standard routes (S/200 for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain) plus an S/11 SERNANP conservation fee added on 1 May 2026, so S/163 or S/211 per adult; that is USD 47 or 61 at the central-bank rate the page quotes. The same page says the platform takes only Visa and Mastercard. https://incatrailreservations.com/travel/machu-picchu-ticket-prices

In Cusco the Boleto Turistico is S/130 for the full 16-site version valid 10 days, or S/70 for a partial circuit; it covers Sacsayhuaman, Q'enqo, Puka Pukara, Tambomachay, Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero, Moray, Tipon, Pikillacta and city museums plus the Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo folk show, but not Machu Picchu, the Cathedral, the Qorikancha temple (about S/15) or the Maras salt pans. It is sold in person at the COSITUC office (Av. El Sol 103) or at the first site, not online. https://danfertourscusco.com/en/blog/boleto-turistico-cusco · https://turismoliberty.pe/en/cusco-tourist-ticket-2026/

Peru's national holidays include Christmas Day (Fri Dec 25, 2026) and New Year's Day (Fri Jan 1, 2027); opening hours of museums, churches and restaurants on those two days were not found, so Dec 25 and Jan 1 are planned around plazas, markets and walks. Huaca Pucllana lists general admission of S/15 with a mandatory guided tour and evening tours from 7 PM per a guide site, and Maido's own site says it is closed on Sundays and opens reservations two months ahead on the first of each month, which makes a December 26 table a long shot. https://www.officeholidays.com/countries/peru/2026 · https://www.officeholidays.com/countries/peru/2027 · https://tour-guide.com/peru/lima/huaca-pucllana/ · https://www.maido.pe/

Neighborhoods and lodging

Miraflores for Lima, the historic centre of Cusco within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas, one night in Aguas Calientes for the early Machu Picchu entry, and a hotel at Lima airport for the 12:05 PM departure.

Lima: signed-out Booking.com cards for Dec 24-27, 3 nights, 2 adults, taxes and fees included, show Hotel Antigua Miraflores (9.3, 2,144 reviews, twin, breakfast, free cancellation) at USD 352 down from 586, Best Western Plus Urban Larco (9.0, 2,337 reviews) at 250, Jose Antonio Executive (8.8) at 236, and La Casona Azul (9.4, shared bathroom) at 163; IHG-branded InterContinental is 839. I chose Antigua for the preferred build because 9.3 from 2,144 guests is the best-reviewed private-bath room at a sane price, and Larco for the lean build. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-24&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miraflores_District,_Lima

Cusco: the 8-night block Dec 27-Jan 4 shows Hostal Corihuasi (9.1, 1,363 reviews, 0.2 miles from downtown, twin with breakfast and free cancellation) at USD 593, Chaquill Chak'a (8.9) at 256, Hotel & Mirador Los Apus at 629 and Katari Apart Hotel at Qorikancha at 778. Because the plan spends Dec 30 in Aguas Calientes, I price the whole block, which lets the larger bags stay at Corihuasi but means one Cusco night (about USD 74) is paid and unused; splitting it would drop one night but needs two separate quotes in New Year week. Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo, 2,040 m, reached only by train or on foot) offers Casa Andina Standard (8.8) at 145, Tierra Viva at 161 and Inti Punku at 108. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-30&checkout=2026-12-31&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machu_Picchu_Pueblo · https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cusco

Lima airport night Jan 4: Wyndham Costa del Sol (8.3, 0.8 miles, breakfast, free cancellation) is USD 125 and Wyndham Grand Lima Airport (9.2, 0.1 miles) USD 179, which fits a 9:35 PM landing from Cusco and a 12:05 PM departure. The saved Chase public pages show no Peru property (the signed-out The Edit page is a sign-in gate), a third-party list of The Edit properties (awardtravel.co) names Belmond hotels in Lima (Miraflores Park) and Cusco (Monasterio, Palacio Nazarenas) that are far above this budget, and none of my mid-range picks appears in either, so each is marked unverified for Chase benefits; the portal itself requires the user's login and I did not sign in. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-04&checkout=2027-01-05&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.chase.com/travel/the-edit · https://www.awardtravel.co/blog/the-edit-by-chase-list

Transport and travel fatigue

The long legs are the 11h50 outbound and the 13h52 return through Salt Lake City; once there, a 90-minute nonstop to Cusco and a 1h40 train keep the ground logistics short.

Outbound on the cheapest sensible routing, SFO 5:20 PM Dec 23 to LAX and LIM 8:10 AM Dec 24 (11h50 elapsed), and return LIM 12:05 PM Jan 5 via Salt Lake City to SFO 10:57 PM (13h52): both under the 24-hour cap in the user's profile and far under the 19h to 33h options with two stops. Skyscanner also lists cheaper itineraries under the cap that I did not build on: USD 1,009 pp (Alaska/LATAM Peru, 20h51 outbound arriving 9:50 PM on Dec 24, which loses Christmas Eve) and USD 1,180 pp (Delta via Atlanta, 20h20 outbound arriving 9:20 PM Dec 24, so Christmas Eve is lost as well); baggage terms are not stated, and I priced them only as the low case. OAK adds about USD 640 per person on one-stop options and the Dec 19 window adds USD 692 per person on the same itinerary, so neither helps. The United floor fare of USD 2,210 pp is a different routing: it departs SFO 5:00 AM (landing 11:55 PM on Dec 23), 11:59 PM or 12:45 AM (landing 11:55 PM on Dec 24, 20h56 and 20h10), so Christmas Eve is lost or cut to a late-night arrival in every case. Arrival at 8:10 AM on the agency itinerary means the room may not be ready; I did not find an early check-in promise on the booking cards. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Lima to Cusco is a Sky Airline nonstop (1h25 out, 1h40 back); the 8:00 AM departure on Dec 27 lands 9:25 AM and gives a full day to adjust to 3,400 m before the Sacred Valley (2,800-3,500 m) and Machu Picchu (2,430 m); the return CUZ 7:55 PM to LIM 9:35 PM on Jan 4 avoids a same-morning connection. From Ollantaytambo the train to Aguas Calientes takes about 1h40 and a Consettur bus takes about 25 minutes up to the gate; a taxi from Cusco to Ollantaytambo is USD 35 for a sedan. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/lim/cuz/261227/270104/?currency=USD · https://www.peru-spirit.com/guides/machu-picchu-train-tickets-guide/ · https://taxidatum.com/faq/how-much-is-a-taxi-from-cusco-airport-to-ollantaytambo/ · https://lorenzigo.com/cusco-in-december/

Pace: the heavy days are Dec 29 (Chinchero, Moray, Maras by taxi) and Dec 30-31 (Ollantaytambo, train, Machu Picchu, train and taxi back to Cusco by evening), so I put a rest-and-museums day on Jan 1 and a flex day on Jan 3. Sleep is the constraint at altitude and after a 13-hour night flight, not distance. https://lorenzigo.com/cusco-in-december/ · https://www.kimkim.com/c/machu-picchu-in-december-travel-tips-weather-and-more

Budget and value

Preferred build USD 6,862.10 on the agency fare, lean build on the airline-direct fare USD 7,580.83; the swing is USD 1,700 to 2,300 of airfare.

Preferred lines: flights 3,301.00 (partly observed: agency headline plus Sky Airline), hotels 1,215.00 (partly observed Booking.com), meals 927.21 (S/3,190; estimate), ground transport 790.07 (derived), activities 187.77 (S/646; derived), insurance placeholder and 5 percent reserve 441.05; total 6,862.10. Ranges: flights 2,519-5,499; hotels 648-1,690; meals 462-1,564; ground about 710-975; activities 170-251. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/lim/cuz/261227/270104/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-24&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Lima · https://incatrailreservations.com/travel/machu-picchu-ticket-prices

Value test against the decision profile: the low-case total (the sum of the low ends of the six line ranges, with the insurance line at its USD 120 placeholder and no reserve) is about USD 4,630 (the low flights line uses a 20h51 outbound that skips Christmas Eve), which passes the firm USD 7,000 hard cut, and the mid case passes by about USD 140; the high case is about USD 10,820 (the sum of the high ends of the six line ranges: 5,499 + 1,690 + 1,564 + 975 + 251 + 841, where the insurance line high of 841 is the 120 placeholder plus the 321 reserve plus 400 for bags, a rebooked train and medication). The United-fare figure of about USD 8,670 is the preferred build with flights raised from 3,301 to 5,024 plus the 5 percent reserve on that increase (1,723 x 1.05 = 1,809). I therefore do not cut Peru but I do not call it viable: the mid case depends on a USD 1,349-per-person fare that the LATAM-direct listing on Skyscanner does not match (USD 2,448 per person with bags) and that I could not reproduce airline-direct. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/config/16216-2612231720--32115-1-13571-2612240810%7C13571-2701051205--32115-1-16216-2701052257?currency=USD · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.latamairlines.com/us/en/flight-offers?origin=SFO&destination=LIM · https://www.alaskaair.com/search/results

Against Portugal (this repository's Lisbon dossier, conditional at about USD 6,977; its figure was not re-read in this run) Peru costs about the same on the agency fare and adds Machu Picchu and a deeper food scene but gives up Portugal's shorter transit and one-base pace and adds altitude and rain; against Switzerland (the Lucerne dossier in this repository, USD 11,528.53 on its preferred build, carried here and not re-read in this run) it is roughly USD 4,670 cheaper. The user's stated priorities weight food and culture heavily, which is where Lima and Cusco are strongest. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-24&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Food prices come from Numbeo's crowd-sourced Lima page (inexpensive meal S/15, mid-range meal for two S/120, cappuccino S/11.15), the Peru Spirit food guide (menu del dia S/12-20, huariques S/25-45, tasting menus S/700-950) and the Maido site (S/1,295 per person for the 12-step menu without drinks); Cusco prices were not found on Numbeo, so Lima is used as a proxy. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Lima · https://www.peru-spirit.com/guides/lima-food-scene-guide/ · https://www.maido.pe/

Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T16:05:00Z

Risks and cancellation

The sharpest risks are the airfare gap, rain and altitude; cancellation terms were not read on any airline, train or hotel page.

Airfare risk: the agency itinerary at USD 1,349 pp states no baggage, LATAM and Alaska direct pages failed twice, and United's one-stop options start at USD 2,210 pp; a fare of USD 2,200 pp or more (4,400 for two plus 604 domestic, reserve 5 percent on the 1,703 increase) moves the trip to about USD 8,650 to 8,700. Hotel deals ("Limited-time", "Late Escape", "1 left") can vanish; free cancellation is shown on most chosen cards (Antigua, Corihuasi, Costa del Sol), not on the Casa Andina Machu Picchu card. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/config/16216-2612231720--32115-1-13571-2612240810%7C13571-2701051205--32115-1-16216-2701052257?currency=USD · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.latamairlines.com/us/en/flight-offers?origin=SFO&destination=LIM · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-24&checkout=2026-12-27&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-27&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-30&checkout=2026-12-31&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD

Weather and operations: afternoon storms are the norm, trail and road closures are possible, Machu Picchu entry slots are non-refundable by the guides' account and name-bound, and Dec 31 is a 5,600-visitor day; PeruRail also notes that its bimodal service uses a transfer station on some schedules, so the Ollantaytambo departure and the exact train should be read on the PeruRail or IncaRail booking page before buying the entrance ticket. Altitude: Cusco is at 3,400 m, so the first day is deliberately light. https://exploorperu.com/blog/machu-picchu-guide/machu-picchu-weather-december/ · https://machupicchu.com/guide/machu-picchu-in-december · https://www.perurail.com/tickets-to-machu-picchu · https://www.peru-spirit.com/guides/machu-picchu-train-tickets-guide/ · https://lorenzigo.com/cusco-in-december/

Document risk: the six-month US visa validity on arrival is the one hard gate; both travelers should read their stamps now. US re-entry and remote work are user-attested, not verified. https://www.consulado.pe/es/londres/tramite/Paginas/Visas/Issuance-of-Tourist-Visa.aspx

Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T16:05:00Z

Alternatives and pushback

The strongest alternative is Portugal at a similar price with shorter, easier travel; the strongest case against my verdict is that this is the best-value food trip on the list if the cheap fare is real.

Alternatives inside Peru: Lima only (12 nights at roughly USD 83 to 117 a night on the Larco and Antigua cards) loses Machu Picchu and the highlands but avoids altitude and rain; Cusco and Sacred Valley only drops the three Lima days (USD 352 of lodging) but loses the best eating; the Dec 19 start costs USD 692 pp more on the same flight and adds remote-work exposure; OAK adds about USD 640 pp. I did not research Arequipa, Lake Titicaca or the Amazon; they were outside the 14-day budget and the rainy-season risk is higher. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261219/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/oak/lim/261223/270105/?currency=USD

Pushback: a cautious reader should say the USD 1,349 agency fare is exactly the sort of headline that disappears or carries no bag; the trip then costs about USD 8,700 (United floor with the Sky Airline legs: flights 4,420 + 604 = 5,024) to 9,200 (LATAM-listed fare with bags) and misses the ceiling; note the USD 1,349 figure is the LATAM/Delta listing on the chosen 11h50 itinerary, and Skyscanner's lower fares (USD 1,009, 1,180) have 20h outbounds that arrive on Christmas Eve night or Christmas night. A food-first reader would say the opposite, that Lima's eating, Cusco's markets and one clear Machu Picchu morning are worth a rainy week. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/lim/261223/270105/config/16216-2612231720--32115-1-13571-2612240810%7C13571-2701051205--32115-1-16216-2701052257?currency=USD · https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://lorenzigo.com/cusco-in-december/

Provisional Itinerary

Itinerary follows Option 1: Peru.

  1. Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · San Francisco to Lima (overnight flight)

Eat before boarding and be at SFO by mid-afternoon; the itinerary Skyscanner lists under LATAM and Delta (operated by Delta and LATAM Airlines Peru) leaves SFO 5:20 PM, connects through Los Angeles (1h45) and lands in Lima at 8:10 AM on Dec 24, 11h50 elapsed. Sleep on the plane and keep a light layer, a charger and the passport with the US visa page in the carry-on.

Outbound overnight flight with a Los Angeles connection, arriving the next morning, so there is nothing to visit.

Lodging: No hotel tonight (overnight flight).

Transfer: Own transport to SFO is not priced; the itinerary departs SFO 5:20 PM Wed Dec 23.

Weather alternative: The only connection is at Los Angeles (1h45); if it is missed, ask the airline to rebook onto a later LAX-LIM departure and tell the Miraflores hotel.

  2. Day 2 · 2026-12-24 · Lima: Miraflores

Land at 8:10 AM, clear immigration with the US visa and take an official airport taxi (S/80-150) or a pre-booked transfer to Miraflores; the room may not be ready, so store bags, have a late breakfast and a coffee, and walk the clifftop. Spend the afternoon at Huaca Pucllana, nap, and keep Christmas Eve dinner simple and booked ahead, since many families eat late and some restaurants close early.

    Huaca Pucllana

Why it matters: An adobe-and-clay pyramid in the middle of Miraflores, a pre-Inca ceremonial site surrounded by modern apartment blocks (Wikipedia and a guide site).

Why this visit: It is the quickest way to see that Lima is older than its Spanish centre, in your own neighbourhood on a jet-lagged day.

Time: 45-60 minutes for the guided circuit. Admission includes a mandatory guided tour; evening tours from 7 PM when it is lit (guide site, not verified on a dated page); confirm Dec 24 hours on the day.

Cost basis: S/15 pp (about USD 4.36 each, USD 8.73 for two).

    Miraflores clifftop and parks

Why it matters: Miraflores is one of the wealthier districts of Lima and a main tourist destination, known for its bougainvillea and flat-roofed multi-coloured housing (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: A flat, low-altitude walk is the right first-day activity after an overnight flight and before 3,400 m.

Time: 1.5-2 hours. Walk from the hotel; carry a layer, the coast is humid (81 percent) and breezy.

    Cost basis: Free.

Lodging: Hotel Antigua Miraflores, Dec 24-27 (3 nights, USD 352, Booking.com signed-out total).

Transfer: Official Taxi Verde S/80-150 (USD 22-40) or Uber S/50-110 in 30-70 minutes; do not take unmarked curb taxis.

Weather alternative: Lima is almost rainless in December (0.2 mm) but often grey; if it is misty, swap the clifftop walk for a museum or a long lunch.

  3. Day 3 · 2026-12-25 · Lima: historic centre and ceviche

Christmas Day is a national holiday, so I plan around plazas, not interiors: take a taxi to the Historic Centre, walk the Plaza Mayor area and its balconied streets, and treat any church or museum that happens to be open as a bonus. Lunch is the day's event: ceviche is a lunch dish, eaten between noon and 4 PM, so book a cebicheria and skip a big dinner.

    Historic Centre of Lima

Why it matters: Founded on 18 January 1535 by Francisco Pizarro as the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru; the centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is the colonial core of the capital and the context for everything Spanish-era in Peru; on a holiday it is quiet enough to walk.

Time: 2-3 hours. Interior hours on Dec 25 are not confirmed; use a taxi both ways and avoid isolated side streets after dark.

Cost basis: Free outdoors; church and convent entry fees are not priced.

    Ceviche lunch in Miraflores

Why it matters: Ceviche is considered the national dish of Peru and is recognised by UNESCO as an expression of Peruvian traditional cuisine and an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: Food and culture is the user's top priority and fresh ceviche at lunch is the cheapest introduction to it.

Time: 1.5 hours. Lunch only, noon to 4 PM per the food guide; reserve for Christmas Day.

Cost basis: About S/45 for two at huarique level up to S/140 for a mid-range meal for two (Numbeo S/120 for three courses without drinks plus two beers at S/9, rounded).

Lodging: Hotel Antigua Miraflores (night 2 of 3).

Transfer: Taxi or Uber Miraflores-centre about S/30 each way; the Metropolitano bus is not priced.

Weather alternative: If the centre is wet or closed, stay in Miraflores and make lunch longer; Lima rain in December is rare.

  4. Day 4 · 2026-12-26 · Lima: Barranco and Miraflores food day

The last Lima day is for eating. Have a menu del dia or huarique lunch, wander Barranco in the afternoon and book dinner at Kjolle (a la carte, mains S/90-160) or another Barranco table; Central and Maido are the famous tasting-menu rooms: Maido's own site says reservations open two months ahead on the first of each month (the food guide says one to three months for Central and Maido), Maido is S/1,295 per person and closed on Sundays, so I would not plan on them. Pack tonight for the 8:00 AM flight.

Menu del dia or huarique lunch

Why it matters: Everyday Lima eating is the menu del dia at S/12-20 and the huarique (small family restaurant) at S/25-45, which the food guide calls the defining side of the city.

Why this visit: It shows what locals actually eat and keeps the food budget sane.

Time: 1 hour. No booking needed; go before 2 PM.

Cost basis: About S/45 for two.

    Barranco dinner at Kjolle

Why it matters: Kjolle, Pia Leon's restaurant beside Central in Barranco, is a la carte as well as tasting menu with a focus on overlooked Peruvian ingredients; Central is run by Virgilio Martinez and Pia Leon and builds its menu by altitude (food guide and restaurant site).

Why this visit: It gives the Lima top-table experience without the S/700-1,295 tasting commitment.

Time: 2 hours. Reservations usually a few weeks ahead; book as soon as the window opens.

Cost basis: About S/400 for two (mains S/90-160 each plus a shared starter and drinks, assumed).

Lodging: Hotel Antigua Miraflores (night 3 of 3).

Transfer: Taxi or Uber to Barranco about S/20 each way (assumed); airport taxi tomorrow about 5:30 AM.

Weather alternative: Rain is unlikely; if Barranco dinner falls through, Miraflores has the highest density of good restaurants per the food guide.

  5. Day 5 · 2026-12-27 · Lima to Cusco, 3,400 m

Take a pre-dawn taxi to LIM for the 8:00 AM Sky Airline flight, land in Cusco at 9:25 AM and take the official airport taxi (S/25-30) to the hotel. Today is deliberately empty: coffee, coca tea if offered, a slow walk around the Plaza de Armas and Qorikancha late afternoon, an early dinner and bed. Skip alcohol and heavy meals at 3,400 m.

Plaza de Armas and the historic centre of Cusco

Why it matters: Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, sits at about 3,400 m and is nicknamed the navel of the world (Wikipedia and a traveler guide).

Why this visit: It is the base for eight nights, so orienting yourself on a slow first day is the point.

Time: 1.5 hours. Walk from the hotel (0.2 miles from downtown); arcades give shelter from afternoon rain.

    Cost basis: Free.

    Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun)

Why it matters: Qorikancha is an Inca sanctuary in Cusco at about 3,400 m, the religious heart of the Inca capital and later built over by the Spanish (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is a short, low-effort visit that sets up the Inca story before the ruins above the city.

Time: 1 hour. Entrance is paid separately from the Tourist Ticket (about S/15); the Tourist Ticket only covers its small site museum.

Cost basis: S/15 pp (USD 4.36 each).

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi, Cusco, Dec 27-Jan 4 (8 nights, USD 593; the Dec 30 night is unused while you are in Aguas Calientes and the bags stay in the room).

Transfer: Taxi Miraflores-LIM about S/115; flight 1h25; CUZ airport taxi to centre S/25-30, 10-15 minutes.

Weather alternative: If rain starts mid-afternoon, switch Qorikancha to the next morning and spend the afternoon in a cafe.

  6. Day 6 · 2026-12-28 · Cusco: ruins above the city

Buy the full Tourist Ticket (S/130 each) at the COSITUC office on Av. El Sol 103 at about 8 AM, then take a taxi up to Sacsayhuaman and work down through Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay before the afternoon rain. Be back in the centre for lunch by 1 PM and rest; an early dinner follows.

    Sacsayhuaman

Why it matters: A citadel on the northern outskirts of Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire; the name is glossed as fortress of the royal falcon or hawk (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is the largest and closest Inca stone complex to the city and the best use of a morning at altitude.

Time: 1.5-2 hours. Covered by the Tourist Ticket, Circuit I is valid one day only; start before 8:30 AM.

Cost basis: Included in the S/130 full Tourist Ticket (USD 37.79 each).

    Q'enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay

Why it matters: Q'enqo's carved limestone outcrops served as a ceremonial centre, with Puka Pukara a watchtower and Tambomachay ritual baths (Turismo Liberty guide).

Why this visit: They are short, scenic stops on the same road, so one taxi covers all four sites.

Time: 1.5 hours. Same Circuit I ticket; keep the taxi waiting.

Cost basis: Included in the Tourist Ticket.

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi (night of Dec 28).

Transfer: Taxi hire for the four sites about S/80 (assumed), Cusco rides about S/12 each.

Weather alternative: If it is raining hard at 8 AM, do the city museums on the Tourist Ticket first and the ruins tomorrow morning only if the Sacred Valley day is swapped.

  7. Day 7 · 2026-12-29 · Cusco: Chinchero, Moray and Maras

Hire a private taxi for the day at about 8 AM: Chinchero first for its town and weaving, then Moray's terraced circular depressions on the high plateau, then the Maras salt ponds, back in Cusco by 5 PM. This is the high plateau at 3,300-3,500 m, so go slowly, carry water and a rain shell and be off the plateau before the afternoon storms.

    Chinchero

Why it matters: Chinchero is the capital of its district in the Urubamba province, a mainly Quechua community and the proposed site of a Cusco airport (Wikipedia); it is on the Tourist Ticket.

Why this visit: It is the first stop on the plateau and a place where weaving is still a living craft.

Time: 1-1.5 hours. Covered by Tourist Ticket Circuit III (S/70 partial, or the full ticket).

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

    Moray

Why it matters: An Inca site about 50 km north-west of Cusco at about 3,500 m with terraced circular depressions up to 30 m deep, producing a temperature difference of as much as 15 C from top to bottom (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is the most unusual Inca site near Cusco and the farm-lab explanation is a good story.

Time: 1 hour. On the Tourist Ticket; paved route via Maras.

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

    Maras salt ponds

Why it matters: Maras is a Sacred Valley town known for its salt evaporation ponds, with over 5,000 ponds in use since Inca times, reached down a canyon north of the town (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is the best photograph of the valley and a working landscape, not a ruin.

Time: 1 hour. Not on the Tourist Ticket; the entrance fee was not found, so none is budgeted.

Cost basis: Entrance price unknown (not budgeted).

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi (night of Dec 29).

Transfer: Private taxi about USD 90 for the day (assumed, scaled from the USD 35-60 Cusco-Ollantaytambo quote).

Weather alternative: In heavy rain skip Maras and do Chinchero and Moray only, or swap this day with the Jan 3 flex day.

  8. Day 8 · 2026-12-30 · Cusco to Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes

Take a 7 AM taxi to Ollantaytambo (about two hours), spend the morning at the ruins, then board a mid-day train down the Urubamba canyon (about 1h40) to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo, 2,040 m). Check in, buy supplies, eat early and be in bed by 9 PM for the early Machu Picchu entry.

    Ollantaytambo

Why it matters: An Inca archaeological site and town at 2,792 m about 72 km north-west of Cusco, the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti and later a stronghold of Manco Inca Yupanqui against the Spaniards (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is where the Machu Picchu train starts, so the visit costs no extra journey and the site fills the morning before the train.

Time: 2 hours. Covered by Tourist Ticket Circuit III; reach the station about 30 minutes before departure.

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

    Train to Aguas Calientes

Why it matters: The only way to Machu Picchu Pueblo apart from hiking; there is no road, and the town only exists because of the railway opened in 1931 (Wikipedia and a train guide).

Why this visit: The canyon ride is part of the Machu Picchu experience and fixes the timing of the entry ticket.

Time: 1h40 each way. PeruRail or IncaRail; book once the entry ticket is confirmed and arrive about 90 minutes before the entry slot.

Cost basis: About USD 150 pp round trip, Expedition-class guide range 130-170.

Lodging: Casa Andina Standard Machu Picchu, Dec 30-31 (USD 145); the Cusco room stays booked.

Transfer: Taxi Cusco-Ollantaytambo USD 35; train round trip about USD 150 pp (guide range 130-170, not a dated quote); Consettur bus on Dec 31 about USD 24 pp round trip.

Weather alternative: Rain in the valley is likely by mid-afternoon; if the train is delayed, the hotel can hold the room and the Dec 31 entry slot is fixed, so book the earlier train.

  9. Day 9 · 2026-12-31 · Machu Picchu and back to Cusco for New Year's Eve

Take the first Consettur buses up (queues of 30-45 minutes in peak) for an early entry slot, walk the classic circuit with a guide or the official signs, and be back in town by lunch. Take an early-afternoon train to Ollantaytambo and a taxi to Cusco, reaching the hotel by about 6-7 PM for a late New Year's Eve dinner and the fireworks around the Plaza de Armas.

    Machu Picchu

Why it matters: A 15th-century Inca citadel on a ridge at 2,430 m, planned around 1450 for the Inka Pachakuteq, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders (Peru Travel and Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is the single non-negotiable sight of the trip and the reason Peru is a conditional yes.

Time: 3 hours inside plus travel. Ticket from tuboleto.cultura.pe, name and passport bound, route 2-A or 2-B; Dec 30-31 are 5,600-visitor days; Visa or Mastercard only.

Cost basis: S/163 pp (S/152 plus S/11 SERNANP fee), USD 47.4 each.

    New Year's Eve in Cusco

Why it matters: Cusco's Christmas and New Year festivities draw Peruvian visitors and overseas travellers, and the late-December weeks behave like peak season (kimkim and MachuPicchu.com guides).

Why this visit: Being in the city that night is the reason to return from Aguas Calientes rather than stay put.

Time: Evening. Book dinner early; no event schedule was read, so confirm on the day.

Cost basis: About S/500 for two for the meal (assumed).

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi (night of Dec 31, after the unused Dec 30 night).

Transfer: Bus about 25 minutes up; train to Ollantaytambo about 1h40; taxi to Cusco about 2 hours (USD 35).

Weather alternative: If the morning slot is rained out, cloud and mist are common; the ticket is date, route and hour bound, so there is no swap: go anyway, with a poncho.

  10. Day 10 · 2027-01-01 · Cusco: rest and museums

New Year's Day is a national holiday and the night was late: sleep, have a long breakfast, and spend the afternoon on whichever Tourist Ticket museums are open, finishing with the evening folk-dance show at the Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo. Hours on the holiday are unconfirmed, so treat both as options and rest if they are shut.

City museums on the Tourist Ticket

Why it matters: The full Tourist Ticket covers the Contemporary Art, Regional History and Popular Art museums, the Qoricancha site museum and the Pachacuteq monument centre (Danfer Tours).

Why this visit: A rainy holiday afternoon is exactly what an indoor, ticket-covered visit is for.

Time: 2 hours. Holiday opening hours not confirmed; show the ticket.

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

Centro Qosqo de Arte Nativo folk show

Why it matters: An evening folk-dance show included in the full Tourist Ticket (Danfer Tours).

Why this visit: It is a low-effort cultural evening that needs no extra ticket.

Time: 1 hour. Show times were not read; confirm at the ticket office.

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi (night of Jan 1).

Transfer: Walk; taxi S/12 if raining.

Weather alternative: Rain makes museums the plan; sunshine allows the San Blas lanes.

  11. Day 11 · 2027-01-02 · Cusco: Pisac

Take a taxi to Pisac in the morning for the Inca ruins on the hill and the market in town, then lunch in the valley and back to Cusco by mid-afternoon. Market days were not confirmed, so ask the hotel which day the large market runs and adjust.

    Pisac ruins

Why it matters: Pisac is a town in the Sacred Valley on the Urubamba River best known for its Inca ruins and a large market that draws heavy tourist traffic from Cusco (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is the most accessible Inca hillside complex in the valley and completes the Tourist Ticket circuit.

Time: 2 hours. Covered by Tourist Ticket Circuit III or the full ticket.

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

    Pisac market

Why it matters: The Pisac market is the town's other famous attraction (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: It is a place to buy textiles and eat local snacks at a gentle pace.

Time: 1.5 hours. Days and hours not confirmed; ask at the hotel.

Cost basis: Free to enter; purchases extra and unbudgeted.

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi (night of Jan 2).

Transfer: Round-trip taxi about USD 60 (assumed).

Weather alternative: In heavy rain do the market and a long lunch and skip the hillside ruins.

  12. Day 12 · 2027-01-03 · Cusco: flex day, South Valley or Cathedral

This is the weather and energy buffer. In good weather take a taxi to Tipon and Pikillacta in the South Valley (both on the Tourist Ticket); otherwise walk the Cathedral and San Blas and have a long lunch. Pack tonight and have the Jan 4 morning free.

    Tipon and Pikillacta

Why it matters: Both are South Valley sites included in the full Tourist Ticket (Danfer Tours).

Why this visit: They are quieter than the Sacred Valley classics and a good use of a free day.

Time: 3-4 hours. Taxi round trip; start in the morning.

Cost basis: Included in the full Tourist Ticket.

    Cusco Cathedral and San Blas

Why it matters: Cusco Cathedral and the church circuit are not on the Tourist Ticket and are paid separately (Danfer Tours); Cusco is a historic Inca capital with colonial churches built over it (Wikipedia).

Why this visit: The wet-weather alternative that keeps the day productive.

Time: 2 hours. Entry price was not found, so none is budgeted.

Cost basis: Entrance price unknown (not budgeted).

Lodging: Hostal Corihuasi (night of Jan 3).

Weather alternative: Use the day to swap in any Sacred Valley stop that was rained out on Dec 29 or Jan 2.

Where To Stay

Mid-range and well-reviewed local picks. Card-benefit status is a lead to check on the Chase Travel portal, which needs your own login; nightly prices here come from public pages and may differ there. Card benefits are upside, never subtracted from cost.

What Travelers Say

Paraphrase: the December rhythm is a bright cloudless morning, clouds by 3:30 PM and rain between 3 and 5 PM, so every serious sightseeing day starts before 8 AM and afternoons are for cafes and museums. This confirms my plan to do the heavy outdoor stops in the morning.

Gabriel Lorenzi (LorenziGo), travel blog, 2026 (several December trips to Cusco) · source

Paraphrase: December is both quiet at the start of the month and hectic over Christmas and New Year, with Peruvians arriving to visit family and one of the largest handicraft fairs in the Andes in Cusco. That complicates the idea of December as a low-season bargain; it agrees with my booking-early advice.

kimkim (travel marketplace guide), Machu Picchu in December guide · source

Paraphrase: December is a low-crowd wet-season month with one exception, the Christmas and New Year weeks, which behave like peak season and tighten lodging and entry dates. Entry stays rationed as timed, circuit-specific tickets, so book the scarce pieces with lead time.

Highland Adventures (MachuPicchu.com), planning guide, updated Sep 4, 2026 · source

Paraphrase: Machu Picchu in December is rainy with frequent clouds and fog and highs near 17 C, mornings are usually drier, and trail and road closures can occur, so check conditions and book tickets in advance. This confirms my early-slot choice and my fallback on delays.

Konsti Sobon (Exploor Peru), blog, last updated 25 September 2026 · source

Paraphrase: December is the start of the green season with bright mornings and afternoon showers, Santurantikuy artisan market on Dec 24 and fewer crowds outside the holidays; exposed day trips are a bonus, sheltered city and valley sights are reliable. It contradicts the idea that December is a write-off, but I could not confirm Santurantikuy date or place beyond the post.

Open Flags

  • Whether the USD 1,349-per-person SFO-LIM agency fare is bookable with a checked bag, and the airline-direct price for the LATAM/Delta itinerary (LATAM and Alaska pages failed).
  • Expiry dates of both US visa stamps against the six-month rule for a Dec 24 arrival.
  • Machu Picchu route and morning-slot availability on Dec 31 on tuboleto.cultura.pe, and the dated PeruRail or IncaRail fare for Dec 30-31.
  • Hotel-direct totals, taxes and cancellation terms; the Booking.com deals may vanish.
  • Museum, church and restaurant hours on Dec 25 and Jan 1, and any New Year's Eve event schedule in Cusco.
  • Entry price for the Maras salt ponds, Cusco Cathedral and Lima churches (not budgeted).
  • Sky Airline baggage rules for the Lima-Cusco flights (carry-on only is assumed).
  • Whether the earlier Dec 19 departure is worth about USD 1,380 more in airfare (USD 692 pp on the same itinerary) and the remote-work exposure.
  • source: The Consettur bus fare (USD 24 pp round trip, Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, Dec 31) is cited as an 'undated guide figure' in the transfer line and in the Dec 30-31 calculation (line ~2110 and line ~260), but no evidence file in evidence/ contains the word Consettur or any bus fare. Grep of the full evidence directory for Consettur, bus price and shuttle patterns found nothing usable. The figure is therefore untraced. The transport total of USD 790.07 includes USD 48.00 for it.
  • source: Two Lima and Cusco taxi figures used in the cost calculations are not traced to rendered evidence. (a) 'Taxi Miraflores-LIM about S/115' (draft line ~1943, Lima airport taxi 2 x S/115 in the transport calculation) is not found in taxi-lima.txt or taxidatum; those sources show USD 13-30 and USD 22 for a sedan. The 'official Taxi Verde counter S/80-150' range is also not found in the evidence. (b) 'Cusco airport official taxi S/25-30' (draft lines ~1941, ~2352, and the 2 x S/30 line) is not in the excerpt of taxi-cusco-airport.txt I read; the saved excerpt is truncated at 2,000 characters and the S/25-30 figure was not located.
  • source: The Machu Picchu logistics line says the platform takes 'Visa or Mastercard only'. The mp-prices.txt excerpt I read does not clearly show this payment rule within the saved text; the phrase appeared in a grep match but its context could not be confirmed as official ticketing terms.
  • source: Claims checked and consistent with evidence: Machu Picchu S/152 + S/11 = S/163; 5,600 cap on Dec 30-31; Tourist Ticket and Qorikancha prices; the Lima Dec 24-27 and Cusco booking totals; flight times; the FX conversion of 3.440436 PEN per USD; visa six-month wording; and the traveler voices in voice-exploor, voice-inkanet and voice-journey (weather, crowd and December-holiday points). No high or critical source defect was found. Disclosed unknowns (LATAM and Alaska direct failures, absent hotel-direct rates, undated train pages) were stated honestly and are not treated as errors.
  • consistency: Low-case flights line states 'USD 251 pp' with 'USD 501 for two'. 2 × 251 = 502. The Sky Airline page total is 501, so the pair is internally inconsistent by USD 1.
  • consistency: The pushback paragraph says the USD 1,180 Delta option arrives 'Christmas Eve night or Christmas night'. The evidence shows it lands 9:20 PM on Dec 24, which is Christmas Eve night only.
  • consistency: Lean build ground line prices the Lima airport taxi at the daytime S/115 rate, but the United flight lands about 11:55 PM. The night premium is not budgeted, so the lean ground basket may be understated.
  • consistency: The lean build's return leg is not read in the saved evidence, yet the 24-hour travel cap is asserted for that build.
  • coverage: The headline and recommendation call Peru a 'conditional yes' at about USD 6,862, but the draft's own walk-away rule is already triggered by the observed airline fares. The draft says that if the best bag-inclusive fare is USD 2,200 or more per person, the traveler should choose another destination. The observed airline-direct fares are United from USD 2,210 per person (bags unread) and LATAM-listed USD 2,448 per person with both bags. The only figure under the ceiling (Justfly USD 1,349 per person) has unknown bag terms and was not reproduced airline-direct. The headline therefore presents a best case as the lead recommendation.
  • coverage: The decision profile requires lodging to be checked against public Chase Travel pages, but every lodging entry is recorded as 'unverified'. The Chase requirement is therefore not met for any hotel in the shortlist. This is disclosed, but it leaves the lodging readiness claim incomplete.
  • coverage: The lean ceiling arithmetic is rounded incorrectly. Solving (F + 604 + 2,082) × 1.05 + 120 ≤ 7,000 gives F ≤ 3,866.38, so the rounded-down figure is 3,866, not 3,867 as written.
  • coverage: The Dec 30–31 Casa Andina label reads as two nights, but the stay is one night (Dec 30, USD 145). The hotel total of 1,215 correctly counts 13 nights, so only the label is misleading.
  • coverage: The Dec 31 and Dec 30 lodging wording is internally coherent but needs one clarification: the Cusco room for the Dec 30 night is paid but unused. Its cost is included in the USD 593 Cusco total, but the itinerary does not state the cost of that unused night as a separate line.
  • coverage: The Switzerland comparison saving is rounded to about USD 4,670, while the computed difference is USD 4,666.53. The rounding is minor but is in the comparison section that the coverage pass must check.
  • opportunities: Hash binding could not be verified. The shell tool was denied, so shasum over draft.json and the evidence set was not run. The supplied hashes are therefore unverified by this pass, and approval cannot rest on them.

Your Action Plan

Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.

  1. Medium priority: Read the Sky Airline baggage rules and check whether an earlier CUZ-LIM departure exists on Jan 4.

Why: The preferred plan assumes carry-on-only luggage on Sky Airline and the 7:55 PM flight lands at 9:35 PM before a 12:05 PM international departure, so the real risk is a cancelled or badly delayed domestic leg with no same-day rebooking (the gap to the international departure is about 14.5 hours).

How to check: Open the Sky Airline baggage page and the CUZ-LIM Jan 4 results on skyairline.com or the airline form.

Decision impact: Bag fees above about USD 40 for two adds to the ground line; an earlier flight removes the missed-connection risk on Jan 5.

  2. High priority: Read the expiry date on both travelers' US visa stamps.

Why: Visa-free entry requires a US visa valid at least six months on arrival (about 2027-06-24); the user-attested validity through Jan 5 is a shorter test.

How to check: Look at the printed expiry on each visa foil; compare with 2027-06-24.

Decision impact: On or after that date the visa-free route works; earlier means a consular visa through the Peruvian consular section (San Francisco is listed on gob.pe) and the trip waits for it.

  3. High priority: Price SFO-LIM, Dec 23-Jan 5, two adults, with a checked bag each, on LATAM, Delta and Alaska direct.

Why: The agency headline is USD 2,697 for two with unknown baggage; LATAM's own Skyscanner listing is USD 4,895 and United is USD 4,420 or more; the gap decides the verdict.

How to check: On each airline site enter SFO-LIM, round trip, Dec 23 and Jan 5, 2 adults, economy and read the fare brand, bag allowance and total.

Decision impact: A bag-inclusive international total at or under about USD 2,828 for two keeps the preferred build under the USD 7,000 ceiling; USD 4,420 (the United floor) pushes it to about USD 8,670, above the ceiling, and Peru should drop out.

  4. High priority: Check Machu Picchu route and morning slot availability for Dec 31 on tuboleto.cultura.pe.

Why: Entry is timed, route-specific and name-bound; Dec 30-31 are capped at 5,600 visitors a day and sell out in high season.

How to check: Open tuboleto.cultura.pe/llaqta_machupicchu, choose Dec 31, check routes 2-A and 2-B and the earliest hour; stop before payment.

Decision impact: If no morning slot exists, move the Machu Picchu day to Dec 30 or Jan 1 and shift the Aguas Calientes night; if no slot at all, the main reason for Peru weakens.

  5. Medium priority: Read the dated PeruRail or IncaRail fares and times for Ollantaytambo-Aguas Calientes on Dec 30 and Dec 31.

Why: The USD 300 train line is a guide range (USD 130-170 round trip pp) and the biggest ground-cost item.

How to check: Open perurail.com or incarail.com, choose Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, Dec 30 outbound, Dec 31 return, 2 adults.

Decision impact: A total above USD 440 adds about USD 140 or more; a missing return that fits the NYE plan means staying one more night in Aguas Calientes.

  6. Medium priority: Confirm hotel-direct totals, taxes and cancellation terms for the four stays.

Why: Booking.com cards show signed-out totals; the hotel-direct pages gave no dated rates.

How to check: Use each hotel's own booking engine for the same dates and compare the totals and cancellation deadlines; ask Hostal Corihuasi for a split-stay or reduced rate that skips the unused Dec 30 night.

Decision impact: More than about 10 percent higher than the cards means switching to the lean stays; free cancellation on all four keeps the airfare decision reversible.

  7. Low priority: Check Dec 25 and Jan 1 hours for museums and the two or three restaurants you care about.

Why: Both are national holidays and no hours were found.

How to check: Ask the hotel concierge or check each venue's own page.

Decision impact: Closures move the Historic Centre walk or the museum afternoon to another day or a plaza-based plan.

  8. Low priority: Ask your clinician about altitude at 3,400 m before departure.

Why: Cusco, Chinchero, Moray and Maras are all above 3,000 m.

How to check: Book a travel clinic or primary care appointment; ask about altitude illness and medicines.

Decision impact: Advice against high altitude would remove the Sacred Valley days and weaken the trip.

Limitations And Freshness

Research expires after 30 days; price snapshots become historical after 24 hours. Always recheck current availability. Failed or incomplete checks are not confirmed facts.

  • Actual researcher model identity is unverified; configured model is not runtime proof.
  • Regular browser canvas used; cookie and login isolation are unknown.
  • The LATAM and Alaska airline-direct pages failed (error pages), so the USD 1,349 pp agency fare for the LATAM/Delta itinerary was not reproduced airline-direct; United airline-direct was read only for the Dec 23 outbound result list (lowest roundtrip USD 2,210 pp, one stop), without fare brand, bags or the return leg.
  • The Sky Airline fares were read with the provider check incomplete (7 of 24 providers); hotel-direct pages returned no dated rates; Booking.com totals are signed-out snapshots whose deal prices may disappear; the Cusco 8-night total includes the Aguas Calientes night.
  • The PeruRail and IncaRail fares, Machu Picchu entry availability and Sky Airline baggage terms were not read on dated booking pages; train, taxi, ruins-day and activity prices come from guides and operator pages and Numbeo (Lima proxy for Cusco).
  • Most pages (guides, Wikipedia, Numbeo, official site excerpts) were read as static HTTP text, not rendered captures; the Wikipedia pages include raw template text; page text is untrusted data.
