Spain

Spain over Dec 23 to Jan 5 is a strong food-and-culture trip with real holiday-closure and flight-fatigue caveats; the money does not fit at point estimates: the best build is USD 987 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling, and a Schengen visa needs an in-person appointment by 2026-11-23.

Advisor memo

Spain misses the USD 7,000 ceiling by about USD 1,000 on its best build, so treat it as conditional on finding savings and a visa appointment.

My recommendation

I would not book Spain for this window as it stands. I would keep it as a conditional option and only if you can find about USD 1,000 of savings. The best version I can build is twelve nights split three in Madrid, three in Seville and six back in Madrid, with Toledo and Segovia as day trips once the Christmas shutdown passes. At the observed flight fare and observed nightly hotel rates it comes to USD 7,987 for the two of you, USD 987 over your firm USD 7,000 ceiling. My range for it is USD 6,466 to USD 10,350, and the only way under the ceiling is for nearly every flexible line to land at its floor.

Entry is a process you can finish but not a formality. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, and for residents of the Bay Area the Spanish consulate in San Francisco handles it through BLS, in person, by appointment, at least 30 days before travel. That makes 2026-11-23 the last safe application date, about six weeks from today. The one thing that would flip my view is the airfare: at about USD 3,647 it is nearly half the budget, and I only saw it on an aggregator.

Why this trip fits the two of you

Food and culture is where Spain is strongest. Madrid gives you the Prado, the Royal Palace and the tapas lanes around Plaza Mayor, and Seville gives you the Alcázar, the Cathedral and the Santa Cruz alleys. It is also the warmer base: the 30-year December average high is 16 °C in Seville against 10 °C in Madrid, which is the winter-scenery argument for going south, though Seville is wetter at about 76 mm against 44 mm.

What it trades away is the beach, entirely. Nothing in this route touches the coast, and I would not sell it as a nature trip either, although Retiro park is a UNESCO-listed green space in the middle of Madrid. Ease of travel is mixed: about 19 hours each way with two stops, then a very walkable trip once you land.

How the trip unfolds

You land in Madrid at 3:20 PM on Christmas Eve after the Delta and KLM routing through Seattle and Paris. I would put you in the Novotel Madrid City Las Ventas for the first three nights: guests rate it 4.5 across about 5,900 reviews and it was the best-value well-reviewed hotel I saw at USD 131. I have not checked how far it is from Sol, so treat it as a metro or taxi ride from the old centre. Christmas Day is the dead day. A Rick Steves forum regular who spent the holiday in Seville said everything was open and bustling except for a shutdown that starts on the afternoons of the 24th and 31st, and that on the 25th and 1st only a couple of restaurants tied to big hotels were serving. So book a Christmas lunch early and spend the rest of the day in Retiro, which does not close.

On Saturday the 26th the Prado reopens and earns a full morning. It holds the Spanish royal collection, with Velázquez, Goya and El Greco among its best-represented artists, and I would pick three or four rooms and skip the rest. The Royal Palace takes Sunday morning, the 27th, and then the afternoon train to Seville. Renfe had not posted the holiday timetable when a forum poster asked, so keep that day flexible.

Seville is three nights at the Hotel Alcántara, rated 4.5 by about 760 guests at USD 145, in the Santa Cruz area. If you want one special night, the Hotel Murillo Reinoso scores 4.8, but from only 130 reviews. Spend the 28th on the Alcázar and the Cathedral, both part of the same UNESCO World Heritage listing, and the 29th on Plaza de España, built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, and an evening in Triana. Take the train back on the 30th.

The last six nights are Madrid again. New Year's Eve is the main event: the grapes at midnight under the clock tower in Puerta del Sol, with an early dinner booked well ahead because restaurants run set menus and many close early. January 1 is closed almost everywhere, so I would walk the old centre and not plan a single ticketed thing. Toledo and Segovia fill the 2nd and 3rd; Toledo for its walled historic centre, Segovia for the Roman aqueduct. The 4th is a slow day, because your flight leaves at 6:05 AM on the 5th and you will need a taxi around 3 AM.

What it will really cost

Here is the arithmetic for the build I recommend. Flights are USD 3,647 for two, a Skyscanner snapshot of the Delta and KLM itinerary from San Jose. Hotels are USD 1,614: nine Madrid nights at USD 131 and three Seville nights at USD 145, from Google Hotels. Meals are an estimate of USD 1,624, about EUR 100 a day for two from Numbeo price levels at 1.12 dollars per euro, plus a holiday set-menu premium. Ground transport is USD 400, activities USD 300, and the last line is USD 402: USD 252 in consulate and BLS fees and USD 150 for insurance and a reserve.

The central version, with Hotel Europa by Puerta del Sol in place of the Novotel, is USD 8,440. Madrid only, central, is USD 8,413. So Seville costs almost nothing extra and I would keep it.

Observed means seen on a public page on one day, October 11. Flights and nightly hotel rates are observed on aggregators only; everything else is an estimate with a stated range. On value, USD 7,987 does not clear the ceiling, and I would not rank Spain's value higher than a destination that fits.

Where this can go wrong

Closures are the biggest risk. Christmas Day, New Year's Day and the afternoons before them shut most sights and many restaurants. One Spain booking guide notes that holiday apartments often require three to seven night minimums across those dates, which is why I priced hotels. The Three Kings parade on January 5 is the evening of your departure, so you miss it.

Fatigue is real: about 19 hours out and 19 back with two stops each way, and a 6:05 AM return that begins in the middle of the night. The visa needs an in-person appointment and I could not see availability. Who should skip this trip: anyone who wants beach time, or who cannot tolerate a dead Christmas Day.

The best alternative

The strongest alternative inside Spain is Madrid alone with central hotels and the two day trips, at USD 8,413. It avoids two train rides and a hotel change, but loses Seville, which is the reason to go in winter, and it costs USD 426 more than my build. I would switch to it only if the Dec 27 or Dec 30 train times turn out poor.

What to check next

First, confirm both of you hold US visa stamps the consulate accepts; it says B-1/B-2 holders cannot apply in the United States. Second, open the BLS San Francisco booking page and see whether appointments exist before 2026-11-23; none was checked. Third, reprice the flight on Air France, KLM or Delta directly, because the United site errored and the Air France form was not completed. Fourth, decide whether you would stretch toward USD 8,000. If not, Spain drops out. Finally, check The Edit and Chase Travel yourself for these hotels, since their property lists need a login and this research never signed in.

The workings behind the memo

Entry And Visa Lead Time

For an Indian passport holder. US re-entry is user-attested, not verified.

Entry routeconsular-visa: Indian passport holders need a Schengen (Type C) visa for tourism in Spain. Residents of Northern California apply at BLS Spain in San Francisco on behalf of the Consulate General; the consulate says applicants must legally reside in its jurisdiction and hold a Permanent Resident Card or a valid US long-term visa (B-1/B-2 holders cannot apply there). The official eligibility checker was not run for this dossier; the requirement is read from the consulate and BLS pages.
Lead time30 days
Last safe application date2026-11-23
Feasible before departureYes
US visa dependencyThe consulate requires proof of legal US residence: a Green Card or a valid US long-term visa. The user attests valid US visa stamps through the return date (2026-10-11 attestation); confirm the visa type is accepted by the consulate.
TransitSpain is the main destination and the first Schengen entry. The priced routing connects through Paris and Amsterdam, which are Schengen airports; a Schengen visa for Spain covers airside connections but check each connecting country's transit rules for a landside stop.
FeesUSD 106 consulate fee per adult by money order, plus a USD 20 BLS service charge by debit card, about USD 126 per person (BLS San Francisco page). Travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000 is mandatory and priced separately.
Application steps
  1. Check that each traveler holds a Green Card or a valid US long-term visa and a passport valid for at least 90 days after leaving Schengen with two blank pages.
  2. Book an appointment through the official BLS Spain San Francisco site (the consulate says an appointment is mandatory); do not pay third parties for appointments.
  3. Prepare the signed application form, photo, proof of residence in the jurisdiction, round-trip flight reservation, hotel reservation for the full stay, three months of US bank statements, insurance certificate and cover letter.
  4. Attend the appointment in person at 717 Market St, Suite 425, San Francisco, pay the consulate fee by money order and the BLS fee by debit card.
  5. Track the application; the consulate's minimum processing time is 15 working days and BLS asks for submission at least 30 days before travel.
Documents to prepare
  • Passport valid at least 90 days after leaving Schengen, with two blank pages, issued within 10 years
  • Signed Schengen application form and a recent 35x45 mm photo
  • Proof of residence in the consulate's jurisdiction, such as a driver's license with a current address
  • Green Card or valid US long-term visa copy (F-1 holders add the I-20)
  • Round-trip flight reservation and hotel reservation matching the dates (do not buy tickets before the visa)
  • Three months of US bank statements and the latest savings and credit card statements
  • Schengen travel insurance certificate with at least EUR 30,000 cover and repatriation
  • Cover letter with the itinerary and purpose of travel
Next actionOpen the BLS Spain San Francisco booking page and check appointment availability before 2026-11-23; no appointment availability was checked.

Options And Value

Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.

Option 1: Spain

Value rating: Conditional

Best version of Spain: 3 nights Madrid, 3 nights Seville, 6 nights Madrid with value hotels. It totals USD {t} at point estimates, USD {o} over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling, and fits only near the low ends of every flexible line (about USD 6,466).

Compared with: The central-hotel version of the same route costs USD 453 more; Madrid only with central hotels costs USD 426 more than this build.

What changes this rating: Moves to Weak fit if the fare or hotel total rises or the visa appointment cannot be had by 2026-11-23; moves toward Strong fit only if a direct fare near USD 3,000 and hotel rates near the observed floor both hold.

Price confidence: Partly observed

Flights (Skyscanner, one day) and nightly hotel rates (Google Hotels, one day) are observed; meals, rail, activities, insurance and visa fees are estimates; no airline-direct or hotel-direct total was captured.

Best version of Spain: 3 nights Madrid, 3 nights Seville, 6 nights Madrid with value hotels. It totals USD 7,987 at point estimates, USD 987 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling, and fits only near the low ends of every flexible line (about USD 6,466).

It is over the ceiling at point estimates, the flight is about 19 hours each way with two stops, Dec 25 and Jan 1 are near-total shutdowns, there is no beach, and the visa needs an in-person appointment.

Party cost: USD 7,987. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-11T07:35:00Z.

Assumptions: Economy, taxes included per the page; checked-bag fees not verified; airline-direct total not captured (United errored, Air France form not completed), so repricing risk remains. SFO fares for the same dates were about USD 1,881 to 1,891 per person.

Planning range: USD 3,266 to 4,400. Fares move daily; the first-listed KLM itinerary was USD 3,266 and the next tier was USD 3,671 to 4,038; baggage fees on basic fares can add USD 100 to 300.

Planning range: USD 1,250 to 2,100. Holiday rates are dynamic and can rise as availability shrinks; the range reflects a roughly 15% drop to a 30% rise.

Meals1,624estimate12 days x EUR 100 per day for two (two inexpensive lunches/snacks at EUR 16 each, one mid-range three-course dinner for two at EUR 60, coffees about EUR 8) = EUR 1,200 = USD 1,344 at 1.12, plus USD 280 for the Christmas Day lunch and New Year's Eve set-menu premium (2 meals x about USD 140) = USD 1,624

Assumptions: Madrid price levels from Numbeo (crowd-sourced, not menus); Seville assumed similar; hotel breakfast not included; Assumes USD 1.12 per EUR (xe.com mid-market rate read 2026-10-11); exchange-rate movement is not modeled. Holiday set menus were not observed.

Planning range: USD 1,100 to 2,100. Set menus on Dec 24, Dec 25 and Dec 31 can run well above a normal dinner; eating mostly tapas and supermarket food would land near the low end.

Ground transport400estimate4 Madrid-Seville rail person-legs (2 travelers x 2 legs) x USD 70 (about EUR 62 each, an assumed fare) = USD 280, plus USD 120 for airport taxis (two trips), metro and the Toledo and Segovia day trips = USD 400

Assumptions: No Madrid-Seville fare was observed; the holiday timetable was not yet published per a forum thread. Taxi start fare EUR 3.35 per Numbeo; the 6:05 AM departure means a taxi before the metro opens. Assumes USD 1.12 per EUR (xe.com mid-market rate read 2026-10-11); exchange-rate movement is not modeled.

Planning range: USD 300 to 650. AVE fares range from low advance fares to full price near the holidays; Toledo and Segovia fares were not observed.

Activities300estimate2 travelers x EUR 134 = EUR 268 = USD 300 at 1.12: Prado 15, Royal Palace about 13.5, Real Alcazar 13.5, Cathedral about 12, one flamenco evening about 40, Toledo and Segovia entries about 40 (per person, EUR)

Assumptions: Admission prices come from an AI-assisted search summary and were not confirmed on official pages (the Prado site blocked a direct request); the Cathedral, flamenco and day-trip entries are assumptions. Assumes USD 1.12 per EUR (xe.com mid-market rate read 2026-10-11); exchange-rate movement is not modeled.

Planning range: USD 200 to 450. Free-entry hours, discounts and skipping paid sights would lower it; guided tours and flamenco shows would raise it.

Insurance and contingency402estimate2 travelers x USD 126 (USD 106 consulate visa fee + USD 20 BLS service charge) = USD 252, plus USD 150 for Schengen travel insurance and a contingency reserve = USD 402

Assumptions: Fees from the BLS San Francisco page (consulate fee by money order, service charge by debit card); the insurance premium was not quoted, EUR 30,000 minimum cover is required, and the USD 150 is a reserve, not an observed premium.

Planning range: USD 350 to 650. An insurance quote for EUR 30,000 cover and any rebooking or missed-connection costs are the main swings.

Option 3: Spain

Value rating: Weak fit

Madrid only for 12 nights at Hotel Europa with Toledo and Segovia day trips: simpler, no train legs, USD {t}, which is USD {o} over the firm ceiling.

Compared with: The Madrid and Seville value-hotel build is USD 426 cheaper and adds a second city.

What changes this rating: Changes only if Seville train fares or the holiday timetable turn out far worse than assumed.

Price confidence: Partly observed

Flights and nightly hotel rates are observed on aggregators on one day; the other four lines are estimates.

Madrid only for 12 nights at Hotel Europa with Toledo and Segovia day trips: simpler, no train legs, USD 8,413, which is USD 1,413 over the firm ceiling.

It drops Seville, which is the warmest and most scenic part of Spain in winter, and still costs more than the value-hotel route.

Party cost: USD 8,413. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-11T07:35:00Z.

Flights3,647partly observedSkyscanner round trip SJC to MAD, Dec 23 2026 to Jan 5 2027, 2 travelers: Delta/KLM itinerary at USD 1,824 per person = USD 3,647 total for the party (rendered total; rounding is the site's)

Hotels2,190partly observed6 nights x USD 186 (Hotel Europa Dec 24-29) + 6 nights x USD 179 (Hotel Europa Dec 30-Jan 4) = USD 2190

Assumptions: Nightly rates for 2 guests from Google Hotels listings read 2026-10-11 for the same dates; taxes and fees treatment not itemized; room type, breakfast and cancellation terms not verified; the Jan 4 Madrid night is assumed at the same rate as the searched nights; hotel-direct rates were not obtained and holiday rates may move.

Planning range: USD 1,800 to 2,900.

Ground transport250estimateAirport taxis and metro for two = USD 150, plus Toledo and Segovia day trips for two at USD 50 each person-leg x 2 trips x 2 people = USD 100; total USD 250

Assumptions: No fares observed; taxi start fare EUR 3.35 per Numbeo. Assumes USD 1.12 per EUR (xe.com mid-market rate read 2026-10-11); exchange-rate movement is not modeled.

Planning range: USD 180 to 450. Day-trip fares and airport taxi pricing were not observed; the range reflects both.

Decision summary

Spain is a conditional option: the best build (Madrid, Seville, Madrid) totals USD 7,987 for two, USD 987 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling at point estimates, and only fits near every low-end estimate.

Three builds were priced: value hotels across Madrid and Seville at USD 7,987, the same route with central Hotel Europa at USD 8,440, and Madrid only at USD 8,413. None is under the ceiling at point estimates. At the low end of every range the recommended build is about USD 6,466 and at the high end about USD 10,350. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/mad/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.google.com/travel/search

The verdict is conditional: the destination is strong for food and culture in this window, but the money does not fit at point estimates and a Schengen visa needs an in-person appointment at least 30 days before travel. https://usa.blsspainvisa.com/sanfrancisco/short-term-tourist.php · https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/sanfrancisco/en/ServiciosConsulares/Paginas/Consular/Visados-Schengen.aspx

Entry and transit

A Schengen visa is required; the consulate in San Francisco processes it through BLS in person, at least 30 days before travel, so the last safe application date is 2026-11-23.

The consulate page says Schengen tourism visas require an appointment through BLS, applications are submitted in person at 717 Market St, Suite 425, San Francisco, and applicants must legally reside in the consulate's jurisdiction, which includes Northern California. https://usa.blsspainvisa.com/sanfrancisco/short-term-tourist.php · https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/sanfrancisco/en/ServiciosConsulares/Paginas/Consular/Visados-Schengen.aspx

Applicants must show a Permanent Resident Card or a valid US long-term visa; holders of B-1/B-2 visas cannot apply in the United States. The BLS page says apply no more than 180 days and at least 30 days before travel, the consulate's minimum processing time is 15 working days, and the fees are USD 106 consulate fee by money order plus a USD 20 BLS service charge by debit card. https://usa.blsspainvisa.com/sanfrancisco/short-term-tourist.php · https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/sanfrancisco/en/ServiciosConsulares/Paginas/Consular/Visados-Schengen.aspx

Climate and weather

Madrid is cold and dry in late December (about 10 C highs); Seville is milder (about 16 C) and wetter.

A 30-year climate comparison (Open-Meteo normals) gives December averages of a 16 C high and 8 C low in Seville with about 76 mm of rain, against a 10 C high and 2 C low in Madrid with about 44 mm, with about 7 rain days in both. Madrid is a semi-arid climate with January the coldest month at a 10 C high. https://www.weathermonth.com/en/compare/seville-vs-madrid-in-december · https://temperatures.com/weather/madrid/climate

The plan is built around walking and indoor sights: museums and palaces in Madrid, and the Alcazar and Cathedral in Seville on the days that look driest. https://www.weathermonth.com/en/compare/seville-vs-madrid-in-december

Experiences and closures

Christmas Day and New Year's Day close most sights and many restaurants, and the afternoons of Dec 24 and Dec 31 start the shutdown early.

A Rick Steves forum thread says everything was open except for a shutdown starting on the afternoons of the 24th and 31st, and that in Seville only a couple of restaurants tied to big hotels served on the 25th and 1st. A Spain guide says museums such as the Prado usually close on Dec 25 and many restaurants close, while the metro runs on a holiday schedule. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/spain/visiting-spain-during-christmas-holiday · https://spain.vivandalusia.com/spain-news/christmas-in-spain/

A booking guide says Spain's December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1 shutdowns are national holidays, rentals often require three to seven night minimums across them, and you should book meals early. The Prado, Royal Palace and Alcazar are reported closed on Dec 25 and Jan 1 by an AI-assisted search summary that was not verified on official pages. https://spainhandbook.com/booking-spain-over-christmas-and-new-year-rates-closures-and-minimum-stays/ · https://www.museodelprado.es/en/visit-the-museum

Neighborhoods and lodging

Madrid value hotels sit in Las Ventas (about USD 131 a night), central ones around Puerta del Sol (USD 179 to 193), and Seville stays in Santa Cruz run USD 145 to 165.

For Dec 24 to Jan 4 in Madrid, Novotel Madrid City Las Ventas was USD 131 (4.5 from about 5,900 reviews) and ibis Styles Las Ventas USD 152 (4.7). Near Puerta del Sol for Dec 24 to 30, Hotel Europa was USD 186 (4.5 from about 3,000 reviews) and B&B Hotel Centro Puerta del Sol USD 193 (4.6). https://www.google.com/travel/search

In Seville's Santa Cruz area for Dec 27 to 30, Hotel Alcantara was USD 145 (4.5 from about 760 reviews) and Hotel Murillo Reinoso USD 165 (4.8 from 130). Transport and travel fatigue

Outbound is 18h47 and return 19h10 on the priced Delta and KLM itinerary (two stops each way), under the 24-hour cap but tiring.

The priced itinerary leaves San Jose at 11:33 AM on Dec 23 and lands in Madrid at 3:20 PM on Dec 24; the return leaves Madrid at 6:05 AM on Jan 5 and arrives at 4:15 PM. SFO had 15h10 to 19h outbound options with the same fares near USD 1,881 per person, but several returns exceeded 24 hours. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/mad/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/mad/261223/270105/?currency=USD

A forum poster planning Madrid and Seville over the holidays noted that Renfe had not yet posted the holiday timetable, so the Dec 27 and Dec 30 rail days stay flexible; no Madrid-Seville fare was observed. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/spain/madrid-seville-11-day-trip

Evidence observed: 2026-10-11T07:55:00Z

Budget and value

The recommended build totals USD 7,987 for two; flights and nightly hotel rates were observed on aggregators, and the other four lines are estimates.

Observed on one day: the Skyscanner fare (USD 3,647 for two) and Google Hotels nightly rates (USD 1,614 for 12 nights). Estimated: meals USD 1,624, ground transport USD 400, activities USD 300, and USD 402 for two visa fee sets plus an insurance reserve. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/mad/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.google.com/travel/search · https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Madrid

Every estimate carries a range; the build is already USD 987 over the ceiling and any high estimate widens the gap. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sjc/mad/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.google.com/travel/search

Evidence observed: 2026-10-11T07:55:00Z

Risks and cancellation

Main risks are the budget gap, the visa appointment, the Christmas shutdowns, fare movement and cancellation terms that were not verified.

Airline fare rules and baggage terms were not verified and direct totals were not captured because United returned an error and the Air France form was not completed, so repricing could move the total. https://www.united.com/en/us/fsr/choose-flights · https://www.airfrance.us/en

The visa needs an in-person appointment that could not be checked; the consulate also asks applicants to hold a valid US long-term visa, and a flight reservation and hotel booking with dates are required, so book refundable options. https://usa.blsspainvisa.com/sanfrancisco/short-term-tourist.php · https://www.exteriores.gob.es/Consulados/sanfrancisco/en/ServiciosConsulares/Paginas/Consular/Visados-Schengen.aspx

Alternatives and pushback

Spain gives strong food and culture but no beach and a long flight; its per-day cost against other destinations is for the final comparison.

Inside Spain the strongest alternative is Madrid only at USD 8,413, which drops Seville and costs USD 426 more than the recommended build. https://www.google.com/travel/search

Barcelona was not priced; a forum thread suggests it stays busy year-round and a search summary put mid-range New Year hotel rates at EUR 150 to 250 a night, with no observed fare, so it was not added. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/spain/visiting-spain-during-christmas-holiday · https://eurotrain.net/en/routes/madrid-to-barcelona

Provisional Itinerary

Itinerary follows Option 1: Spain.

  1. Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · San Jose to Madrid (in transit)

Depart SJC at 11:33 AM on the priced Delta/KLM itinerary via Seattle and Paris; overnight in transit.

Outbound travel day: 18h47 SJC to MAD, two stops (Seattle, Paris).

    Lodging: In transit.

Transfer: Ride to SJC; no cost basis beyond airport transfers.

Weather alternative: Winter weather at the connecting airports can delay; keep a margin.

  2. Day 2 · 2026-12-24 · Madrid (arrive)

Land at 3:20 PM, check in, then a short walk to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor and an early dinner before Nochebuena closures.

Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor

Why it matters: Puerta del Sol is the square where Madrid's New Year clock bells mark the traditional twelve grapes, broadcast nationally since 1962; Plaza Mayor is the 17th-century arcaded square nearby.

Why this visit: A short first walk after a long flight uses the daylight and costs nothing before the Christmas Eve closures.

Time: 2 hours. Metro or taxi from the hotel; shops close early on Dec 24 so go before about 4 PM.

Cost basis: No admission for walking; any food or drink comes from the meals budget.

Lodging: Novotel Madrid City Las Ventas (USD 131 observed), night 1 of 9

Transfer: Taxi from Barajas, within the transport estimate.

Weather alternative: Rain: skip the walk and eat near the hotel; shops and restaurants close early.

  3. Day 3 · 2026-12-25 · Madrid (Christmas Day)

Late start; Retiro park walk and a pre-booked Christmas lunch, since most sights and shops are closed.

    Buen Retiro Park

Why it matters: A park in central Madrid that is part of the UNESCO-listed Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro landscape, with the glass Crystal Palace pavilion.

Why this visit: One of the few places that stays open on Christmas Day, so it carries the holiday.

Time: 3 hours. Metro to Retiro or Ibiza; park is outdoors and open; dress for about 10 C.

Cost basis: No admission for walking; any food or drink comes from the meals budget.

Lodging: Novotel Madrid City Las Ventas (USD 131 observed), night 2 of 9

Transfer: Metro on holiday schedule; walk or taxi.

Weather alternative: Rain: a long hotel lunch and an early evening in.

  4. Day 4 · 2026-12-26 · Madrid (Prado)

Prado in the morning; a relaxed lunch and a stroll through the Atocha and Retiro side of town.

    Museo del Prado

Why it matters: Established in 1819, it is a top-visited art museum with the largest collection of Goya and works by Velazquez, El Greco and Bosch.

Why this visit: The best use of the first open day after Christmas; it earns a full morning with three or four rooms.

Time: 3 hours. Closes Dec 25 and Jan 1 and has reduced hours on Dec 24 and Dec 31 per an unverified search summary; pre-book timed entry.

Cost basis: About EUR 15 each (USD 17), unverified on the official page; carried in the activities estimate.

Lodging: Novotel Madrid City Las Ventas (USD 131 observed), night 3 of 9

Transfer: Metro to Banco de Espana or Atocha.

Weather alternative: Rain: the Prado is indoors.

  5. Day 5 · 2026-12-27 · Madrid to Seville

Royal Palace in the morning, then the afternoon high-speed train to Seville.

    Royal Palace of Madrid

Why it matters: The official residence of the Spanish royal family, used for state ceremonies, with over 3,400 rooms and the largest palace floor area in Western Europe.

Why this visit: Gives a half-day of ornate interiors and an indoor option on a cold or wet Sunday morning.

Time: 2.5 hours. Closed Dec 25 and Jan 1 and during state functions per an unverified search summary; take the afternoon train to Seville after.

Cost basis: About EUR 12 to 15 each, unverified; carried in the activities estimate.

Lodging: Hotel Alcantara, Seville (USD 145 observed), night 1 of 3

Transfer: Taxi to Atocha; train timetable not yet posted, so keep it flexible.

Weather alternative: Rain: palace is indoors.

  6. Day 6 · 2026-12-28 · Seville (Alcazar and Cathedral)

Alcazar in the morning, Cathedral and Giralda after, Santa Cruz lunch.

    Real Alcazar of Seville

Why it matters: A royal palace complex in Mudejar style, UNESCO-listed together with the Cathedral and the Archive of the Indies.

Why this visit: The signature sight of Seville and well suited to a cool winter morning.

Time: 3 hours. Closed Dec 25 and Jan 1 and open to about 17:00 in winter per an unverified search summary; pre-book timed tickets.

Cost basis: About EUR 13.50 each, unverified; carried in the activities estimate.

    Seville Cathedral and Giralda

Why it matters: One of the largest churches in the world and the largest Gothic cathedral, it replaced Hagia Sophia as the biggest cathedral after its completion in the early 16th century.

Why this visit: It sits beside the Alcazar, so the two fit one day with a Santa Cruz lunch between them.

Time: 1.5 hours. Walk from the Alcazar; hours around Dec 31 and Jan 1 not verified.

Cost basis: Not observed; carried in the activities estimate.

Lodging: Hotel Alcantara, Seville (USD 145 observed), night 2 of 3

    Transfer: Walk from the hotel.

Weather alternative: Rain: both sights have indoor halls.

  7. Day 7 · 2026-12-29 · Seville (Plaza de Espana and Triana)

Maria Luisa Park and Plaza de Espana, then Santa Cruz and an evening in Triana.

Plaza de Espana and Maria Luisa Park

What Travelers Say

Everything was open and bustling except the shutdown that begins on the afternoons of Dec 24 and Dec 31; on the 25th and 1st only a couple of restaurants tied to big hotels served in Seville.

A Rick Steves forum regular who was in Seville at Christmas four years earlier, Rick Steves Travel Forum thread on visiting Spain over Christmas · source

Apart from Dec 25 and Jan 1 everything should be open, and Three Kings Day on Jan 6 is as important as Christmas, so transport may be affected.

Another forum reply in the same thread, Rick Steves Travel Forum thread on visiting Spain over Christmas · source

Leaned toward Madrid for Christmas because there is more to see despite closures, and worried that Renfe had not posted the holiday timetable or tickets for Dec 26 and Dec 29.

Rates follow a dynamic pattern with surges for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, many rentals require three to seven night minimums across those dates, and early booking is best.

  • Airline-direct round-trip totals and baggage terms were not captured.
  • Hotel-direct rates and Chase Travel eligibility are unverified.
  • BLS appointment availability before 2026-11-23 was not checked; the official Schengen checker was not run.
  • Holiday opening hours and admission prices for the Prado, Royal Palace and Alcazar were not verified on official pages; Madrid-Seville fares and timetable not observed.

Your Action Plan

Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.

  1. High priority: Check BLS Spain San Francisco appointment availability for both travelers

Why: The last safe application date is 2026-11-23 and an in-person appointment is mandatory.

How to check: Open the BLS Spain San Francisco booking page and look for appointments before that date; do not pay third parties.

Decision impact: If no appointment exists before 2026-11-23, Spain drops out; if one exists, it stays conditional on cost.

  2. High priority: Reprice the flights on Delta, KLM or Air France direct pages for SJC or SFO to MAD, Dec 23 to Jan 5, 2 adults

Why: Only aggregator fares were observed; United errored and Air France was not completed.

How to check: Open delta.com, klm.com and airfrance.us, enter the dates and 2 adults, and record round-trip totals with bags; do not purchase.

Decision impact: A direct total near USD 3,000 would narrow the gap; a total above USD 4,000 would move Spain to Not recommended.

  3. High priority: Decide whether a USD 7,987 point-estimate cost is acceptable

Why: The recommended build is USD 987 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling.

How to check: Compare against the other destinations in the final comparison.

Decision impact: If the ceiling stays firm, Spain needs about USD 1,000 of savings or it drops out.

  4. Medium priority: User task: check Chase Travel and The Edit for the shortlisted hotels

Why: The property lists need a Reserve cardmember login and could not be seen publicly.

How to check: This is a user-only task: sign in to the Chase Travel portal yourself; this research never signed in.

Decision impact: A portal rate or benefit could lower the hotel line.

  5. Medium priority: Confirm Madrid-Seville train timetable and fares for Dec 27 and Dec 30

Why: No fare was observed and a forum thread says holiday timetables were not yet posted.

How to check: Check the Renfe site and Iryo for those dates when published.

Decision impact: Poor times favor the Madrid-only build; high fares widen the cost gap.

  6. Low priority: Confirm Prado, Royal Palace and Alcazar hours and admission prices on official pages

Why: Prices and holiday hours came from an unverified search summary; the Prado site blocked a direct request.

How to check: Open each official visitor page for Dec 24 to Jan 4.

Decision impact: A closure on a planned day shifts the itinerary; higher prices raise the activities estimate.
