| Recommendation | Conditional: Food and culture is the strongest fit (HCMC street food, the Cu Chi and Mekong day trips, museums), nature is moderate (Mekong, Phu Quoc), beach is only fair because Jan 1 to 4 falls in the season when drifting water hyacinth and debris reached the southeast beaches in 2026, and winter scenery is absent. The middle case of $7,103.51 is $103.51 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling and the low case of $6,281.42 is under it, so it works only if the airfare lands near the cheapest OTA price and the Phu Quoc hotel stays near $300 to $700 for three nights. |
| Research confidence | Moderate: Flights and all hotel nights come from exact-date, two-traveler public pages read the same day, entry rules come from two Vietnamese government pages and a Taiwan government page, and the itinerary is backed by 14 sourced visit files; but there is no airline-direct total, no property-direct hotel total, two government pages conflict on visa timing, and many activity prices are third-party. |
| Itinerary confidence | Moderate: Every day has at least two sourced visits with hours and prices where published and a wet-weather fallback, but several hours and closures for Dec 25, Dec 31 and Jan 1 were not found, the Phu Quoc beach condition for Jan 1 to 4 is unknown, and the Jan 1 and Jan 4 flight times are unbooked. |
| Price evidence | Partly observed: Flights are an exact-date, two-traveler Skyscanner quote (not an airline checkout total) and all 11 hotel nights are Booking.com totals except one derived night; meals, ground, domestic flights, activities and the reserve are derived or estimated from public guides, and no Jan 1 or Jan 4 domestic fare was seen. Quotes are historical after 24 hours. |

Advisor memo
Vietnam is a strong food-and-culture trip for about $7,104, a little over your ceiling; conditional on the airfare and the island hotel.
My recommendation
I would take Vietnam only as a conditional trip: fly SFO to Ho Chi Minh City on China Airlines via Taipei on Dec 23, spend seven nights in District 1, then three beach nights on Phu Quoc from Jan 1 and a last night back in the city. Plan on about USD 6,281 to 7,589 for the two of you: the low case is $6,281.42, the middle case is $7,103.51 ($103.51 over your firm USD 7,000 ceiling), and the middle case with China Airlines' own listed fare is $7,588.51. The extreme case with every line at the top of its range is $8,615.79.
Entry is an e-visa for each of you, USD 25 each on the Immigration Department's page. Two Vietnamese government pages disagree on processing time: 3 working days on one, and 5 to 30 on the other, which also advises filing 7 to 40 working days before departure. I would treat Oct 28, 2026, about 14 days from today, as the last safe application date for planning, and start the application before you buy anything.
The one thing that flips this: if the airfare is nearer the airline's own listed $4,881 than the cheapest provider's $4,392, or the island hotel is nearer $700 than $300, the trip is over the ceiling and I would drop Phu Quoc.
Why this trip fits the two of you
Food and culture is the preference this trip serves best, and it is the one with the most weight. Ho Chi Minh City gives you street food at a few dollars a bowl, a market, a museum that makes sense of the country, a half-day at the Cu Chi tunnels, a day in the Mekong Delta and an afternoon in Chinatown, all without changing hotels. Nature is middling: the Mekong boats and the Phu Quoc islands, not mountains. Beach is real but not guaranteed, because the Jan 1 to 4 island nights fall in the weeks when drifting water hyacinth and waste reached the southeast beaches in 2026. Winter scenery does not exist here; it is 30 to 32 C and dry in December.
Ease of travel is the weak point. The flight crosses the date line, so Dec 24 disappears and you land at 10:00 AM on Christmas Day. Each leg is under your 24 hour cap, 19h20 out and 16h30 back with one stop in Taipei, but you are in the air a long time and the jet lag is real. On value, I would rate food and culture 5 out of 5, nature 3, beach 3, ease 3 and winter scenery 1; that works out to about 66 out of 100 on your weights, which is a respectable fit rather than a great one.
How the trip unfolds
Getting there (Dec 23 to 25). CI3 leaves SFO at 11:40 PM on Dec 23, lands in Taipei at 5:45 AM on Dec 25 local time, and CI781 reaches Ho Chi Minh City at 10:00 AM. The 1h45 connection stays airside. The Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs says you need no visa if you stay in the international transit area, but the page is a general 2017 FAQ that does not name Indian passports, and an Auckland office page says all travelers must fill in a Taiwan online arrival card, so I would ask the airline before booking.
Ho Chi Minh City, seven nights (Dec 25 to Jan 1). I would book Adora Hotel in District 1: a 4-star about five minutes' walk from Ben Thanh Market with breakfast included and a rooftop sauna, rated 8.0 from 1,044 guests, and $572 for the seven nights on Booking.com. If you want a higher score and do not mind a room without a window, NiK Hotel Thi Sach is 9.3 from 236 guests at $776. I could not confirm Chase Travel status for either; the portal needs your own login.
Christmas Day is easy: the Post Office, the Notre-Dame square and Ben Thanh Market on foot. Joy Nguyen of Day Trips Vietnam says the city is gridlocked around Notre-Dame and Nguyen Hue on Christmas Eve and back to work on the morning of the 25th, which is one small advantage of landing on the 25th. The cathedral interior is closed for restoration, so go for the square.
Dec 26 is the history day: the War Remnants Museum when it opens at 7:30, then the Reunification Palace, which stays open on holidays. Dec 27 is Cu Chi in the morning. Dec 28 is the Mekong Delta on a group tour at about $33 each: the boat among the islands and a pagoda at My Tho. Dec 29 is Cholon, Binh Tay Market and Thien Hau Temple, a temple built around 1760 for the sea goddess Mazu. Dec 30 is the Opera House, Dong Khoi and the Bitexco Skydeck at dusk.
I would spend New Year Eve in the city on purpose. Nguyen Hue Walking Street is the free party, with a DJ stage from 19:00 and fireworks at midnight last year, though nothing is published for this year yet. Joy Nguyen also warns that resorts commonly attach compulsory $50 to $150 per person gala dinners on Dec 24 and 31, and that Dec 20 to Jan 3 runs 25 to 40 percent above normal. The Adora Hotel rate averaged about $82 a night across the seven nights, but the Phu Quoc hotels I looked at for a Dec 29 to Jan 4 stay ran $193 to $333 a night.
Phu Quoc, three nights (Jan 1 to 4). The flight is about an hour. I would put you at Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort in Ong Lang on the calmer west coast: 8.8 from 521 guests, breakfast and a pool, $674 for the three nights. I picked the west coast because Tu Nguyen of VnExpress reported Khem and Sao beaches covered with water hyacinth and waste at the start of 2026, and one visitor who stayed ten days near Khem Beach had not dared to swim. Lilia of Travel Inspire is less alarmed and says the southern beaches tend to stay cleaner, so I would look at photographs the week before. If you want the cheapest island option, Pearl Hotel in An Thoi was $303 for the same nights.
Jan 1 is the afternoon flight, a swim and the night market in Duong Dong. Jan 2 is the An Thoi island tour with the Hon Thom cable car at 1,450,000 VND each, about $56. Jan 3 is a southern day: the Coconut Prison and, if the water looks clean, Sao and Khem beaches. Fiona Mai of Fiona Travels from Asia reminds readers that the island is bigger than it looks and a day with too many stops turns into a day in the car, so I kept it to two. Jan 4 is Ham Ninh fishing village, a fish sauce factory and an afternoon flight back for one more night at the Adora.
Leaving (Jan 5). Check out, be at Tan Son Nhat by about 14:15 for the 5:15 PM departure, and land at SFO at 6:45 PM the same calendar day.
What it will really cost
Here is the arithmetic for two travelers. Flights are $4,396 for China Airlines via Taipei, an observed Skyscanner price for the exact dates, not an airline checkout total; the same flights ran $4,392 to $4,881 across providers, and the cheapest row's carry-on status is unknown. Hotels are $1,327.71: $572 for seven Adora nights, one derived Adora night at $81.71 for Jan 4, and $674 for three Phu Quoc nights, with taxes and fees not itemized on the booking pages.
Meals are $441.33 (breakfast is included at both hotels; I used VND 600,000 for a two-person mid-range dinner from Numbeo and Slow Vietnam's casual and seafood prices at VND 25,900 to the dollar). Ground transport is $357.84, of which $220 is four domestic flight tickets that I estimated at $55 each because no Jan 1 or Jan 4 fare appeared. Activities are $330.63, including $50 for the e-visas (grouped here because the cost sheet has no separate entry line), and the reserve is $250. The total is $7,103.51.
The optional Vespa food tour from $98 each is not in that number; it would add $196. The low case of $6,281.42 uses the cheapest provider fare and Pearl Hotel for the island; the high case of $8,615.79 assumes the top of every range.
On value, I would call this conditional: you get a strong food-and-culture trip, but it runs about $104 over your ceiling in the middle case. Cutting Phu Quoc saves about $851 (net of about $383 for three more Adora nights, meals and rides) and leaves an all-city trip at about $6,253 with no beach.
Where this can go wrong
The visa timeline is the first risk. Two official pages disagree, and the fee is non-refundable, so do not pay for it until you are ready to commit to the dates.
Second, the budget has almost no slack. The airfare moved $27 per person between two reads a few minutes apart, and a rise to the airline's own price of $4,881 pushes the middle case to about $7,589.
Third, Phu Quoc in early January. The debris is seasonal, driven by the northeast monsoon according to Slow Vietnam and by tides after the flood season according to the island's own agriculture and environment department, and I cannot tell you what Jan 1 will look like. Fourth, Dec 31 to Jan 1 is the most expensive stretch of the year; domestic flights tighten around Dec 31, and a fare I could not see is the largest unpriced item.
Who should not choose this: anyone who needs a winter landscape, anyone who dislikes a long flight with a date-line jump, or a traveler who wants a long beach week without a debris risk. Fiona Mai's warning that Phu Quoc is not for people who want seclusion is fair.
The best alternative
The strongest competitor I priced is the same trip starting Dec 19: $8,725.12 in the middle case, about $1,621.61 more for four extra city days, and it relies on remote-work permission, which you have attested but I have not verified. I would not switch unless a Dec 19 fare drops under about $1,893 per person, which is the most that fits under your ceiling with every other line unchanged and well below anything I saw.
The other alternative is the same trip without Phu Quoc, spending the three beach nights in Ho Chi Minh City. It saves about $851 and brings the middle case to about $6,253, under your ceiling, at the cost of the beach. If the airfare checks at $4,881 or the island beaches look covered in debris the week before, I would switch to it.
What to check next
- Vietnam e-visa: read the live FAQ on the e-visa portal in a normal browser and confirm processing time, that Tan Son Nhat is an allowed port and whether a pre-arrival declaration is needed. A 3 working day time relaxes the deadline to mid-December; the embassy's 40 working day advice keeps Oct 28.
- Airfare: search the exact CI3/CI781 and CI784/CI4 itinerary on the airline's own site and on the cheapest provider; a total near $4,396 with a bag leaves the middle case about $104 over the ceiling, and $4,881 moves it to Weak fit.
- Taipei transit and baggage: ask China Airlines whether Indian passport holders on a same-ticket connection stay airside without a visa and how many 23 kg bags the fare includes.
- Domestic flights: get Jan 1 and Jan 4 fares for SGN-PQC; under $35 each saves money, over $90 would shorten the island stay.
- Phu Quoc hotel and beaches: re-run the Jan 1 to 4 search and look at recent photographs of Ong Lang and Long Beach the week before.
The workings behind the memo
Entry And Visa Lead Time
For an Indian passport holder. US re-entry is user-attested, not verified.
| Entry route | e-visa: Indian passport holders need a Vietnamese visa; the official route is the e-visa, USD 25 single-entry or USD 50 multiple-entry per person, valid up to 90 days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs exemption list shows India only with diplomatic and official passports (flattened table, to be viewed in the original), and India is not in the 2025 45-day unilateral exemption list. |
|---|---|
| Lead time | 56 days |
| Last safe application date | 2026-10-28 |
| Feasible before departure | Yes |
| US visa dependency | None for Vietnam entry. Valid US visa stamps through Jan 5, 2027 are needed to re-enter the US and are user-attested, not verified; the US visa also makes a Taiwan Travel Authorization Certificate available only if a traveler leaves Taipei airport, which the plan does not. |
| Transit | Taipei Taoyuan on China Airlines CI3/CI781 (1h45) and CI784/CI4 (2h05) on one ticket. The Taiwan Bureau of Consular Affairs says no eVisa is needed if you do not leave the international transit area; the page does not name Indian nationals and no maximum transit time was found, so confirm with China Airlines before booking, including whether the Taiwan online arrival card applies to transit passengers (an Auckland office page says all travelers must complete it). |
| Fees | USD 25 per person for a single-entry e-visa (USD 50 multiple-entry), USD 50 for two travelers on a single-entry application; paid online at application and non-refundable. |
| Where to apply | Online only, from the Bay Area: the Vietnam Immigration Department e-visa portal at https://evisa.gov.vn (the portal reached through the Immigration Department page below; the primary evisa.gov.vn host failed a certificate check when fetched), one application per traveler. The Vietnam Embassy in New Delhi page confirms the process but does not issue e-visas. |
| Application steps |
|
| Documents to prepare |
|
| Next action | Published processing times conflict: the Immigration Department page says 3 working days, the Vietnam Embassy in India page says 5 to 30 working days and advises filing 7 to 40 working days before departure. The planning date uses the 40 working day figure (about 56 calendar days before the Dec 23 departure, Oct 28, 2026), which is only 14 days from today. Check the live FAQ on the e-visa portal in a normal browser and confirm Tan Son Nhat (SGN) is an e-visa entry port and whether a pre-arrival declaration is required. |
Options And Value
Planning confidence: provisional; route timing, closures and reservations need confirmation. Booking readiness: not verified. Ratings are qualitative labels with a stated basis, not numerical scores.
Option 1: Vietnam
Seven nights in one District 1 hotel for the food, history and day trips (Cu Chi, Mekong Delta, Cholon), with New Year Eve in the city where hotel rates are lower and no resort gala dinner is attached, then three beach nights on Phu Quoc's calmer west coast from Jan 1 after New Year pricing falls, and a last night in Ho Chi Minh City before the 5:15 PM departure.
Middle-case total $7,103.51 is $103.51 over the firm USD 7,000 ceiling; the arrival is Dec 25 because the flight crosses the date line (Dec 24 is lost in the air); winter scenery does not exist here; Phu Quoc debris risk in early January; no Jan 1 or Jan 4 domestic fares were seen; an e-visa for each traveler is a required step with conflicting published processing times.
Party cost: USD 7,103.51. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T09:50:00Z.
2026-12-23 to 2027-01-05
| Party cost line | USD | Basis | Calculation, assumptions and sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights | 4,396 | partly observed | Two travelers x $2,198 = $4,396 for China Airlines via TPE, Dec 23 to Jan 5, Skyscanner headline price read 2026-10-14; the provider list for the same itinerary spans $4,392 (Oojo) to $4,881 (China Airlines as listed by Skyscanner). Assumptions: Aggregator quote (price-ladder rung 2): exact dates, two adults, Economy, USD, taxes included per Skyscanner, checked bag included on most rows (carry-on unknown on the cheapest). Not an airline checkout total, not purchased, and fares moved $27 per person between two reads minutes apart. The $4,881 airline-listed fare is the planning high case for the Dec 23 itinerary and $5,976 (China Airlines, Dec 19) for the Dec 19 itinerary. Classified partly observed because an aggregator quote is not an airline-direct or provider checkout total. Planning range: USD 4,392 to 4,881. Low $4,392 is the cheapest OTA row; high $4,881 is China Airlines' own listed fare, $489 higher; each $100 change moves the middle-case total one for one. The provider list runs up to $5,098 (Kissandfly) for the same itinerary; rows above the airline's own $4,881 were not used. |
| Hotels | 1,327.71 | partly observed | Adora Hotel District 1, 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, $572.00 (Booking.com) + one derived night Jan 4 at $572 / 7 = $81.71 + Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort, 3 nights Jan 1 to Jan 4, $674.00 (Booking.com) = $1,327.71. Assumptions: Booking.com public totals for 2 adults, 1 room; taxes and service charges are not itemized on the results page and no property-direct total could be read; the Jan 4 night is derived, not quoted, and could be higher because another District 1 hotel on the same search (Adora Mira Riverside) priced about twice as high across New Year; free cancellation is shown for several District 1 hotels but was not confirmed for these exact rooms; Phu Quoc Bambusa shows no cancellation line on its card. Planning range: USD 956.71 to 1,717. Low swaps Bambusa for Pearl Hotel (An Thoi, 8.3) at $303 for 3 nights; high is NiK Hotel Thi Sach for the Adora nights ($776 for 7 nights, 9.3, plus a derived Jan 4 night at $110.86) with Phu Quoc Bambusa at $674, plus about 10 percent for taxes and service charges that the cards do not show: ($776 + $110.86 + $674) x 1.10 = $1,717. Phu Quoc rates roughly doubled for Dec 29 to Jan 4 stays, so moving the island dates earlier raises this line. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2026-12-29&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://adora.hotelhochiminh.net/en/ |
| Meals | 441.33 | derived | Breakfast is included at both hotels. HCMC day for two = lunch 2 x VND 70,000 + dinner VND 600,000 (Numbeo mid-range for two) + 2 beers at VND 27,260 each + 2 coffees at VND 47,136 each = VND 888,792 = $34.32; 8 HCMC baskets = 7 full days Dec 25 to 31 plus one basket for the Jan 4 dinner and Jan 5 lunch = $274.53. Phu Quoc day = lunch 2 x VND 165,000 + seafood dinner 2 x VND 400,000 + 2 beach-bar beers at VND 100,000 each (VND 200,000) = VND 1,330,000 = $51.35; 3 days = $154.05 plus the Jan 4 lunch VND 330,000 = $12.74. Total VND 11,430,336 / 25,900 = $441.33. Assumptions: VND 25,900 per USD (XE mid-market 25,901.26 at 09:36 UTC on 2026-10-14). Numbeo is crowd-sourced; Phu Quoc prices come from Slow Vietnam (July 2026) and a rental-operator seafood guide; no Phu Quoc restaurant menu page rendered with prices. No hotel gala dinner is assumed because the plan keeps New Year Eve in a city hotel without a compulsory dinner; Mekong lunch is not netted out. Planning range: USD 330 to 700. Low is street food and local rice or noodle plates only (Slow Vietnam lists street meals of VND 40,000 to 75,000); high adds the 25 to 40 percent holiday uplift Day Trips Vietnam reports for Dec 20 to Jan 3 and one compulsory gala dinner of $50 to $150 per person if a resort attaches one. |
| Ground transport | 357.84 | estimate | Taxi/Grab: airport to District 1 VND 200,000 x 2 trips; Phu Quoc airport to Ong Lang VND 160,000 x 2; HCMC city rides 6 days x 3 x VND 100,000; Phu Quoc local rides 3 days x VND 350,000 = VND 3,570,000 = $137.84. Domestic flights SGN-PQC Jan 1 and PQC-SGN Jan 4 for 2 travelers = 4 tickets x $55 = $220.00. Total $357.84. Assumptions: Fares are mid-points of published ranges from independent guides (SGN to District 1 VND 150,000 to 250,000; PQC airport VND 120,000 to 200,000); no official fare table was read. Domestic flights: Vietnam Airlines page shows only "from VND 782,181" and Skyscanner "from $25 to $26" for other dates, an Expedia snippet quotes $65 one way, and Day Trips Vietnam says Dec 20 to Jan 3 is the most expensive fortnight, so $55 a ticket is an estimate with no Jan 1 or Jan 4 fare seen. Cu Chi and Mekong tours and the island tour include transport. Planning range: USD 230 to 470. Low is four tickets at about $26 plus bus and Grab-bike use; high is four tickets at $65 plus a day of car hire or longer Phu Quoc taxi rides. Baggage on VietJet-type fares is not included in the low case. https://www.vietnamtourism.com/en/tan-son-nhat-airport-to-district-1-taxi-grab-bus-109-and-real-prices · https://daytripsvietnam.com/guides/vietnam-grab-prices-2026 · https://sabrina-rental-phuquoc.com/blog/phu-quoc-airport-transfer · https://sabrina-rental-phuquoc.com/blog/phu-quoc-motorbike-rental-complete-guide · https://www.vietnamairlines.com/en-vn/flights-from-ho-chi-minh-city-to-phu-quoc · https://www.skyscanner.com/routes/sgn/pqc/ho-chi-minh-city-to-phu-quoc.html · https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?From=USD&To=VND |
| Activities | 330.63 | derived | Admissions at VND 25,900 per USD for 2 travelers: War Remnants VND 40,000, Reunification Palace VND 80,000, Bitexco Skydeck VND 240,000, island-hopping plus Hon Thom cable car VND 1,450,000, Sunset Sanato VND 100,000 each = VND 3,820,000 = $147.49. Cu Chi half-day group tour 2 x $33.57 = $67.14 (hotel pickup and entry fees included per the operator listing); Mekong Delta group day tour 2 x $33 = $66.00 (Viet Fun Travel adult group fare); Vietnam e-visa 2 x $25 = $50.00 (government entry fees are grouped here because the cost schema has no separate entry line). Total $330.63. Assumptions: Prices are third-party guides and tour-operator pages (several official pages were JavaScript-only); The Cu Chi group tour is priced with entry fees included per the operator listing; standalone Cu Chi admission is quoted at VND 125,000 to 135,000 by different sources, which matters only if a cheaper tour without entry is booked. The $98 per person Vespa food tour ($196 for two) is an optional upgrade and is NOT in this line. Coconut Prison, Binh Tay Market, Thien Hau Temple, Ham Ninh and the pepper farm are free or unpriced. Planning range: USD 272.71 to 447.79. Low is $272.71: it drops the island tour and cable car ($111.97) for a snorkel-only trip from VND 700,000 ($54.05) and keeps every other line; the high is $447.79: it uses the $80 per person two-person private Mekong price (an extra $94 over the $66 group fare), adds Coconut Prison at up to VND 200,000 each ($15.44) and Kiss Bridge at VND 100,000 each ($7.72) to the base. https://www.vietnamtourism.com/en/war-remnants-museum-ho-chi-minh-city-a-visitor-s-guide · https://dinhdoclap.gov.vn/en/visiting-hours/ · https://thericetour.com/cu-chi-tunnels-entrance-fee-and-opening-hours · https://cuchitunnels.tours/half-day-tours/ · https://mekongtravels.com/tour/1-day-mekong-delta-tour-ho-chi-minh-my-tho-ben-tre/ · https://viet-go.com/en/attractions/bitexco-financial-tower · https://rootytrip.com/en/4-islands-phu-quoc-tour-reviews-and-tips · https://phuquocexpress.com/en/sunset-sanato-beach-club-phu-quoc · https://evisa.immigration.gov.vn/en_US/web/guest/khai-thi-thuc-dien-tu/cap-thi-thuc-dien-tu |
| Insurance and contingency | 250 | estimate | Flat reserve of $250.00, about 3.6 percent of the other five lines; this is a reserve, not an insurance quote. Assumptions: Covers possible excess-baggage charges (China Airlines posted an excess baggage charge adjustment notice on Oct 6, 2026), card and ATM foreign-exchange fees, and domestic fare drift near New Year. No travel-insurance premium was priced; add one separately if wanted. Day Trips Vietnam warns that Dec 20 to Jan 3 rates run 25 to 40 percent above normal. Planning range: USD 100 to 400. Low assumes no extra baggage fee or fare drift; high covers a second checked bag each, a fare rise on the four domestic tickets and a compulsory festive dinner at the Phu Quoc resort. |

Option 2: Vietnam
Starts the trip four days earlier to use the remote-work-dependent window: arrives Dec 21 in Ho Chi Minh City and spends the extra days in the city, Cu Chi and the Mekong before Christmas.
About $1,115 more airfare and about $323 more hotel for four days the plan does not need; the Dec 19 to Jan 5 window needs remote-work permission (user-attested, unverified); the total breaks the firm USD 7,000 ceiling.
Party cost: USD 8,725.12. Travelers: 2. estimate; observed 2026-10-14T09:50:00Z.

| Flights | 5,511 | partly observed | Two travelers x $2,755.50 = $5,511 for STARLUX via TPE, Dec 19 to Jan 5, Skyscanner 2026-10-14 (page still loading providers when read). Planning range: USD 5,511 to 5,976. Low is the same STARLUX fare; high is the China Airlines Dec 19 fare ($2,988 per person). |
| Hotels | 1,650.71 | partly observed | Dec 23 plan hotels $1,327.71 (Adora Hotel 7 nights $572 + derived Jan 4 night $81.71 + Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort 3 nights $674) plus four Adora nights Dec 21 to 25 at the observed $323 four-night total = $1,650.71. Planning range: USD 1,279.71 to 2,072. Dec 19 high adds four Adora nights at the observed $323 plus about 10 percent: $1,717 + $355 = $2,072. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2026-12-29&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://adora.hotelhochiminh.net/en/ |
| Meals | 578.61 | derived | Dec 23 plan basket $441.33 plus four extra Ho Chi Minh City days at $34.32 = $578.61. Breakfast is included at both hotels. Planning range: USD 400 to 850. |
| Ground transport | 404.17 | estimate | Dec 23 plan $357.84 plus four extra HCMC Grab days at 3 rides x VND 100,000 = VND 1,200,000 = $46.33. Taxi/Grab: airport to District 1 VND 200,000 x 2 trips; Phu Quoc airport to Ong Lang VND 160,000 x 2; HCMC city rides 6 days x 3 x VND 100,000; Phu Quoc local rides 3 days x VND 350,000 = VND 3,570,000 = $137.84. Planning range: USD 270 to 520.
| Insurance and contingency | 250 | estimate | Flat reserve of $250.00, about 2.9 percent of the other five lines; this is a reserve, not an insurance quote. |

Decision summary
The preferred plan flies China Airlines via Taipei on Dec 23 (Skyscanner $4,396 for two, 19h20 out and 16h30 back, both under the 24 hour cap), spends seven nights in one District 1 hotel for food, museums, Cu Chi, the Mekong and Cholon, then three nights on Phu Quoc from Jan 1 and a last night in Ho Chi Minh City. Priced lines total $7,103.51 in the middle case, $6,281.42 in the low case and $8,615.79 with every line at its high end. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sgn/261223/270105/?currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sgn/261223/270105/config/16216-2612232340--32444-1-16240-2612251000%7C16240-2701051715--32444-1-16216-2701051845?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD
The flight crosses the date line, so Dec 24 is lost in the air and the first destination day is Dec 25 at 10:00 AM. The return leaves Ho Chi Minh City at 5:15 PM on Jan 5 and lands at SFO at 6:45 PM the same calendar day. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sgn/261223/270105/config/16216-2612232340--32444-1-16240-2612251000%7C16240-2701051715--32444-1-16216-2701051845?currency=USD
The verdict is conditional rather than viable because the total depends on three swing items: an OTA fare near $4,392 against China Airlines' own listed $4,881, a Phu Quoc stay between $303 and $674, and an e-visa process that two official pages time differently. https://www.skyscanner.com/transport/flights/sfo/sgn/261223/270105/config/16216-2612232340--32444-1-16240-2612251000%7C16240-2701051715--32444-1-16216-2701051845?currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://evisa.immigration.gov.vn/en_US/web/guest/khai-thi-thuc-dien-tu/cap-thi-thuc-dien-tu · https://vietnamembassydelhi.in/e-visa-application/
Evidence observed: 2026-10-14T10:13:06Z
Entry and transit
The Immigration Department e-visa page lists $25 for a single-entry and $50 for a multiple-entry e-visa, valid up to 90 days, and states the application "will be processed in 3 working days"; the Vietnam Embassy in India page says an e-visa is processed within 05 to 30 working days and requires a passport valid at least 6 months after arrival; it also advises filing 7 to 40 working days before departure to avoid forced ticket cancellations. Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa-exemption list (June 2025) shows an India row that reads as diplomatic and official passports only, and India is not among the 12 countries in the 2025 45-day exemption; the flattened table could not be fully read, so the e-visa is the planning route. A separate 30-day rule for Phu Quoc arrivals exists but this trip enters at Ho Chi Minh City. https://web.mofa.gov.vn/web/guest/tin-chi-tiet/chi-tiet/viet-nam-39-s-visa-exemption-list-57163-172.html
Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs says travelers who do not leave the international transit area need no eVisa. The two connections (1h45 outbound, 2h05 on the return) are on one ticket and airside, but the page is a general 2017 FAQ that does not name Indian nationals, no official maximum transit time was found, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Auckland says travelers must complete a Taiwan online arrival card, so whether it applies to airside transit passengers is unconfirmed. Indian citizens with a valid US visa can obtain a Taiwan Travel Authorization Certificate if they ever need to leave the airport. https://www.boca.gov.tw/cp-181-542-9dd6d-2.html
The US visa is not an entry requirement for Vietnam. Returning to the US needs valid visa stamps through Jan 5, 2027, which is user-attested here (the profile attests the stamps only; H-1B approval and employer documents are not covered or verified); automatic revalidation after travel applies only to short trips to contiguous territory, per 22 CFR 41.112. https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-E/part-41/subpart-K/section-41.112

Climate and weather
Climate normals for Ho Chi Minh City in December are 32 C highs and 24 C lows with about 9 rain days and 64 mm on one source, and 30 C and 22 C with 62 mm on another; both are 30-year normals, not forecasts. https://weather-and-climate.com/Ho-Chi-Minh-city-December-averages · https://www.weathermonth.com/en/ho-chi-minh-city-weather-in-december
For Phu Quoc, one source gives 30 C by day and 26 C at night with 53 mm, another 28 C and 25 C with 49 mm and 9 rain days; sea temperature is about 28.7 C. Pullman Phu Quoc says dry season runs November to April; the same source puts the island at fewer than two significant tropical events a decade. https://weather-and-climate.com/region-averages-phu-quoc-island-vn,Vietnam-December · https://www.weathermonth.com/en/phu-quoc-weather-in-december · https://seatemperature.info/december/phu-quoc-water-temperature.html · https://pullmanphuquoc.com/the-resort/discover-phu-quoc/phu-quoc-weather/
Slow Vietnam says December's northeast monsoon can push seaweed on to the southeastern beaches, and VnExpress reported Khem and Sao beaches swamped by water hyacinth and waste at the start of January 2026; its coverage names Khem and Sao, not the west coast. Adora Hotel (District 1, 8.0 from 1,044 reviews, breakfast included, city view) was $572 for Dec 25 to Jan 1 on Booking.com, about $82 a night; NiK Hotel Thi Sach (9.3 from 236 reviews, no window) was $776; other breakfast-included hotels on the same search ran higher, such as Silverland Jolie at $1,261 and Adora Mira Riverside at $1,459. A third-party listing shows the hotel is 5 minutes' walk from Ben Thanh Market with 60 rooms and a rooftop sauna. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://adora.hotelhochiminh.net/en/

The outbound CI3 and CI781 total 19h20 with a 1h45 connection at Taipei, and the return CI784 and CI4 total 16h30 with a 2h05 connection; both are on a single ticket, so a missed connection is the carrier's to re-book. Vietnam Airlines lists SGN to PQC at about one hour with 4 to 7 flights a day; the page shows only "from VND 782,181" fares and no Jan 1 or Jan 4 price. An all-Ho Chi Minh City version removes $674.00 for hotel, $220.00 for domestic flights, $12.36 for airport transfers, $40.54 for local rides, $111.97 for island tour, $7.72 for Sanato, $166.80 for island meals ($1,233.39), and adds $245.13 for three Adora nights, $102.95 for three city meal days, $34.75 for three days of city rides ($382.83), saving about $851 and bringing the middle case to about $6,253, but it drops the beach entirely and has no winter scenery either. https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2026-12-25&checkout=2027-01-01&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?checkin=2027-01-01&checkout=2027-01-04&group_adults=2&no_rooms=1&selected_currency=USD · https://www.skyscanner.com/routes/sgn/pqc/ho-chi-minh-city-to-phu-quoc.html

Provisional Itinerary
Itinerary follows Option 1: Vietnam.
Day 1 · 2026-12-23 · San Francisco (SFO) to Taipei (TPE)
Departure day. China Airlines CI3 leaves SFO at 11:40 PM, so the day is for packing, printing the e-visa confirmations and a last meal at home. Eat before the airport; the flight is 14h05 to Taipei.
The itinerary starts in the air: CI3 departs SFO at 11:40 PM Dec 23 and crosses the date line westbound (Taipei is 16 hours ahead of California), so no destination day is spent on Dec 23 or Dec 24.
Lodging: None; overnight in the air.
Transfer: Home to SFO; check in about three hours before CI3 (the carrier posted an excess-baggage charge notice on Oct 6, 2026, so confirm the allowance).
Weather alternative: Not weather dependent; a typhoon delay at Taipei (China Airlines posted typhoon ticketing notices in September) is handled by the carrier on a single ticket.

The calendar date Dec 24 is lost to the date line: CI3 lands at Taipei at 5:45 AM on Dec 25 local time. Sleep as much as possible; there is nothing to plan on this date.
Calendar-day loss from the 16 hour westbound time offset between California and Taipei; the flight and the 1h45 connection are covered on Dec 25.
Lodging: None; in the air.
Transfer: CI3 SFO to TPE (14h05) then a 1h45 airside connection on CI781 to Ho Chi Minh City; stay in the international transit area.
Weather alternative: Not applicable in flight.

CI781 lands at 10:00 AM. By noon you are in the hotel (check-in is from 14:00, so leave bags and shower if allowed). Walk the colonial core on foot: the Central Post Office, then the Notre-Dame square, which on Christmas Day is the place locals come to take photographs, and then Ben Thanh Market for a first bowl and coffee. Keep dinner early and local; Day Trips Vietnam notes the city is back at work by the morning of the 25th and the Christmas Eve crowds are gone.
Saigon Central Post Office
Why it matters: A French colonial post office rebuilt between 1886 and 1891 by the French architect Villedieu beside Notre-Dame; it still sells postcards and posts mail from its counters.
Why this visit: It is the easiest first look at colonial Saigon after a long flight and needs no ticket.
Time: 45 minutes. Hours are reported as about 07:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and to 18:00 at weekends (guides disagree); Dec 25 is a Friday, so check on the day.
Cost basis: Free to enter; postcards and stamps a few thousand VND each.
Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon (exterior and square)
Why it matters: A red-brick cathedral with twin spires, built by the French between 1863 and 1880 with bricks imported from France; on Christmas it draws large local crowds to its square.
Why this visit: The interior is closed to visitors during a restoration that runs toward 2027, so the value is the square and the exterior on the one day it is lit and busy.
Time: 30 to 45 minutes. Interior closed to tourists per a July 2026 update (one snippet says the cathedral remains open to visitors in 2026 with restrictions, so the status is disputed); exterior and square are free. Expect crowds in the square on Christmas Day; Day Trips Vietnam describes gridlock around the cathedral on Dec 24, a date this itinerary spends in the air.
Cost basis: Free.
Ben Thanh Market
Why it matters: One of the city's best-known markets, in the middle of District 1, for first samples of Saigon stall food, coffee and souvenirs.
Why this visit: A low-effort first evening for two travelers who landed after a long flight: local food on the first day, prices posted, nothing booked.
Time: 1.5 hours. Day market about 06:00 to 18:00 and a night market about 18:00 to 23:00 per local guides (sources disagree on the hours, with one listing 07:00 to 22:00, and on a small entrance charge); closing hours around Dec 25 were not confirmed.
Cost basis: Eating is inside the meals line; no admission counted.
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 1 of 7.
Transfer: SGN to District 1 by Grab or taxi, about VND 150,000 to 250,000 ($6 to $10), 25 to 45 minutes (independent guides; no official fare table read).
Weather alternative: Dry season, about 30 to 32 C and 9 rain days in December on average (two sources): if it pours, move Ben Thanh Market indoors (it is a covered market) and shorten the walk.

The history day, done early before the heat. Start at the War Remnants Museum when it opens at 7:30, spend about two hours, then walk to the Reunification Palace, which is open every day including holidays. Lunch near the palace, a rest in the afternoon, then an evening stroll back through the Dong Khoi streets. The optional Vespa food tour (not in the totals) runs 12:30 to 4:30 PM and includes food and drinks; it replaces the lunch and the rest.
War Remnants Museum
Why it matters: Vietnam's main museum of the war from the Vietnamese perspective, with captured aircraft, tanks and a photographic record.
Why this visit: The most direct way to understand 20th-century Vietnam on this trip; it earns time over any market or temple on the list.
Time: 2 to 2.5 hours. Hours reported as 7:30 to 18:00 (one guide) or 17:30 (Trip.com); the official site was JavaScript-only, so confirm Dec 26 hours. 28 Vo Van Tan, District 3. Some exhibits are graphic; skip the photographs if that does not suit.
Cost basis: VND 40,000 per adult, about $1.54 each, $3.09 for two (third-party guide; pay at the gate).
Reunification Palace (Independence Palace)
Why it matters: The palace where the Vietnam War ended on 30 April 1975, described as one of the most intact presidential buildings in Southeast Asia.
Why this visit: Reads as the companion to the museum: one shows the cost of the war, the other is the building where it ended.
Time: 1 to 1.5 hours. Open daily including weekends and holidays, 7:00 to 18:00 per the palace's own visiting-hours page (valid from May 1, 2026).
Cost basis: VND 80,000 per adult for the palace plus exhibit, about $3.09 each, $6.18 for two (VND 40,000 for the palace only).
Optional: Saigon Foodie Vespa tour (Vespa Adventures)
Why it matters: A guided evening or afternoon street-food ride through districts the tourist core misses, run by a long-established Saigon operator.
Why this visit: It is the one splurge that serves the food-and-culture priority directly; the dossier keeps it out of the totals because the budget has no room for it.
Time: 4 hours. Listed as 12:30 to 4:30 PM, food, drinks and hotel pickup included, booked online on the operator page; Dec 26 availability was not checked.
Cost basis: From USD 98 per person, $196 for two; NOT included in the trip total.
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 2 of 7.
Transfer: Grab car or bike between District 1, District 3 and the palace, VND 60,000 to 150,000 per cross-town car ride (Day Trips Vietnam); the museum and palace are about a 10 minute walk apart.
Weather alternative: Both stops are indoors or shaded; the museum is the better wet-weather choice and the palace grounds can be skipped in a downpour.

A half-day out to the Cu Chi tunnels, leaving about 8:00 so that the group arrives before the late-morning crowds, then back in the city by early afternoon. After a rest, walk to Ben Thanh Market for a street-food dinner and an evening coffee. The pace is easy: one outing, one meal.
Cu Chi Tunnels
Why it matters: A network of hand-dug tunnels used by guerrillas during the war, preserved with entrances, booby-trap displays and a crawl-through section.
Why this visit: It makes the museum visit tangible and fits a half-day; it is the one outing that does not need a full day.
Time: 4 to 5 hours including the drive. Open daily about 07:00 to 17:00 (a tour operator and a guide agree); half-day tours listed from $12 to $79 depending on group size. Tight tunnels are not suitable for claustrophobic travelers.
Cost basis: Group tour $33.57 per person ($67.14 for two) with hotel pickup and entry fees included per the operator listing; standalone admission is VND 135,000 on one site and VND 125,000 on another, which matters only if you book a cheaper tour without entry. Inside the activities line.
Ben Thanh Market evening food stalls
Why it matters: The market's evening food stalls and the Phan Boi Chau side streets are a standard first taste of southern dishes.
Why this visit: A second visit in the evening, after the quiet first-day look, for dinner and a sit-down coffee.
Time: 1.5 hours. A night market is reported from about 18:00 to 23:00; confirm in person.
Cost basis: Dinner is part of the meals line (about VND 600,000 for two, Numbeo mid-range).
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 3 of 7.
Transfer: Tour bus to Cu Chi, 50 to 70 km and 1.5 to 2 hours each way depending on the entrance, included in the tour price; Grab to dinner.
Weather alternative: The tunnels are an outdoor site with limited shelter; on a rainy morning swap Cu Chi with the indoor Dec 26 stops or move Cu Chi to Dec 29.

A full day in the delta: a 2 hour drive south, a motorised boat among the river islands, a village walk with coconut candy and honey tea, a lunch, and the drive back. Pickup is around 8:00 and you are back by about 5:00 to 6:30 PM, so dinner is near the hotel.
Mekong Delta river islands by boat (My Tho or Ben Tre)
Why it matters: The Mekong Delta is the river-and-island landscape of canals, orchards and coconut workshops nearest to Ho Chi Minh City.
Why this visit: It is the nearest real nature outing from the city and a cheap way to see rural Vietnam without a night away.
Time: 10 to 11 hours. Pickup about 8:00; My Tho about 70 km and Ben Tre about 85 km, roughly 2 hours each way. Coach-group tours run $33 to $35 per person, small groups $40 to $65, and a two-person private table on one operator is $80 per person.
Cost basis: $33 per person, $66 for two (Viet Fun Travel adult group fare); range up to $160 for two on a two-person private tariff.
Vinh Trang Pagoda, My Tho
Why it matters: A pagoda built in 1849 in Tien Giang province, a standard first stop on My Tho tours.
Why this visit: Gives the day a cultural anchor between the river rides and lunch.
Time: 30 to 45 minutes. Operator itinerary lists a 9:30 AM arrival at My Tho and a pagoda visit; exact entrance charge not stated.
Cost basis: Included in the group tour price per the operator page.
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 4 of 7.
Transfer: Air-conditioned tour vehicle with hotel pickup, about 70 to 85 km each way; included in the tour price.
Weather alternative: December is dry season with clear skies; if the day is hot and hazy, rely on the boat and the shaded village stops rather than extra walking.

A slow Chinatown morning: taxi to Binh Tay Market when it opens, wander the wholesale hall, then walk to Thien Hau Temple for incense and the temple's carved roof, with a late lunch of Cholon noodles or dim sum in between. Back to the hotel by early afternoon for a rest.
Binh Tay Market
Why it matters: Cholon's main market, a Chinese-Vietnamese wholesale hub, where the morning trade in dry goods and spices is the draw.
Why this visit: It shows the Chinese-Vietnamese commercial side of Saigon that District 1 does not.
Time: 1 hour. About 06:00 to 18:00 daily per guides; 57A Thap Muoi, District 6; vendors set prices so bargain politely.
Cost basis: Free to enter.
Thien Hau Temple
Why it matters: A temple built around 1760 for Mazu, the sea goddess, among the oldest and most active in Cholon.
Why this visit: Offers the most atmospheric visual of the Chinese temple tradition in the city, with spiral incense coils and ceramic roof friezes.
Time: 45 minutes. Open about 6:00 to 17:30; 710 Nguyen Trai, District 5; dress modestly.
Cost basis: Free; incense donations are voluntary.
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 5 of 7.
Transfer: Grab or taxi about 8 km from District 1 to Binh Tay, about 30 to 40 minutes (fare not published; a short cross-town car ride is VND 60,000 to 150,000 per Day Trips Vietnam).
Weather alternative: Both stops are covered or partly covered; in heavy rain stay inside the market hall and shorten the temple walk.
Day 8 · 2026-12-30 · Ho Chi Minh City, District 1
A light downtown day. Late breakfast, then Dong Khoi and the Saigon Opera House from the outside for architecture and coffee shops, a long lunch, and then up Bitexco Financial Tower in the late afternoon for the Skydeck view of the Saigon River at dusk.
Saigon Opera House and Dong Khoi
Why it matters: Saigon's main performance venue and a downtown landmark on Dong Khoi, home to the AO show.
Why this visit: A stroll through the architecture and cafes without a ticket, while the larger sights are done.
Time: 1.5 hours. The exterior is free; interior access and show schedules were not verified.
Cost basis: Free (exterior); coffee is inside the meals line.
Bitexco Financial Tower Saigon Skydeck
Why it matters: A downtown tower whose Skydeck observation deck is on the 49th floor, with views over the river and the city.
Why this visit: The best vantage for the Saigon skyline in daylight and dusk.
Time: 1 to 1.5 hours. Open 09:30 to 21:30 per one guide listing (other listings differ); Skydeck tickets can be booked on site.
Cost basis: VND 240,000 per adult, about $9.27 each, $18.53 for two.
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 6 of 7.
Transfer: On foot or short Grab rides within District 1; VND 15,000 to 30,000 for a short Grab bike hop.
Weather alternative: The Skydeck is indoor-covered; if the sky is clouded or rainy, visit the Opera House and a museum cafe and drop the tower.
Day 9 · 2026-12-31 · Ho Chi Minh City, District 1
New Year Eve is spent in the city on purpose: no gala dinner is known to be attached to this hotel (ask in writing) and the hotel rate is far lower than on the island. Rest the day, book an early dinner, and head to Nguyen Hue Walking Street by 7:30 PM to get a spot before the crowds peak after 10 PM; fireworks last year were 15 minutes from midnight. If the crush is too heavy, walk to the river toward Thu Thiem Bridge.
Nguyen Hue Walking Street countdown
Why it matters: A 720-metre pedestrian boulevard in District 1 that guides call the heart of the city's countdown.
Why this visit: It is the city's main free New Year event and a reason to spend the 31st in Saigon rather than on the island.
Time: 3 to 4 hours. Last year's plan: DJ stage from 19:00 and fireworks 00:00 to 00:15; no 2026-27 programme is published yet. Crowds peak after 22:00.
Cost basis: Free; drinks and snacks from street vendors.
Thu Thiem Bridge riverside fireworks view
Why it matters: The riverside near Thu Thiem Bridge and Landmark 81 is where main fireworks displays are seen from the river.
Why this visit: The calmer alternative to the walking street if the crowd is too dense.
Time: 1 to 2 hours. One guide lists the main displays at Thu Thiem Bridge and near Landmark 81; displays are free and public.
Cost basis: Free.
Lodging: Adora Hotel, 42-44 Thu Khoa Huan, District 1 (Deluxe Room with City View, breakfast included; $572 observed for the 7 nights Dec 25 to Jan 1, about $81.71 a night); night 7 of 7.
Transfer: On foot from the hotel (about 1.2 km); Grab is not reliable near the walking street in the evening, so walk or ride before 6 PM.
Weather alternative: Fireworks are outdoors and free; if it rains, watch from a District 1 rooftop bar or from the hotel's rooftop.

A late start after New Year Eve, then the flight to Phu Quoc (about one hour) in the afternoon: Day Trips Vietnam says domestic flights tighten around Dec 31, so book a mid-day seat. Check in at Ong Lang, a swim if the sea is clear, and the Phu Quoc Night Market in the evening for the seafood stalls and the sea urchin.
Ong Lang Beach
Why it matters: A quiet west-coast beach north of Duong Dong with almost no waves, away from the big resorts.
Why this visit: The base for the beach stretch of the trip: calm water and a local feel, on the west coast; the January 2026 debris report names Khem and Sao, and conditions at Ong Lang were not reported either way.
Time: 2 hours. Sea is described as calm in December; debris reports concerned the southeast (Khem and Sao), not Ong Lang, but conditions on Jan 1 are unknown.
Cost basis: Free.
Phu Quoc Night Market (Duong Dong)
Why it matters: The island's evening food market in Duong Dong town: grilled seafood, sea urchin, herring salad, pearls and souvenirs.
Why this visit: The easiest way to eat the island's specialties on night one at street prices.
Time: 2 hours. Open about 18:00 to 23:30 per a September 2026 guide (the guide also says it may be relocated in 2026); sea urchin from VND 60,000 for 3 to 4.
Cost basis: Dinner for two VND 300,000 to 400,000, inside the meals line.
Lodging: Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort, Ong Lang (Deluxe Double or Twin with Pool View, breakfast included; $674 observed for the 3 nights Jan 1 to 4, about $224.67 a night); night 1 of 3.
Transfer: SGN to PQC, about 1 hour; fare unseen for Jan 1 (estimated $55 a ticket); Grab or taxi from PQC airport to Ong Lang about VND 120,000 to 200,000 ($5 to $8).
Weather alternative: West-coast sea is calm in December; if the day is hazy, spend the afternoon at the pool and go to the night market only after dark.

Island-hopping day. The listed operator tour runs 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM and bundles the three islands with the Hon Thom cable car and Aquatopia, so the day is already planned: snorkel, swim, ride the cable car over the sea, and be back by 5 PM. Take Sunset Sanato in the evening if energy allows, for a drink and the sunset.
An Thoi archipelago snorkelling and Hon Thom cable car tour
Why it matters: The An Thoi islands at the southern tip are the island's standard snorkelling and boat trip, sold together with a ride on the Sun World Hon Thom cable car.
Why this visit: It is the most reliable nature day on the island; beaches near town cannot match the clear water around the islands.
Time: 9.5 hours. Tour listed as 7:30 to 17:00 and including the cable car and Aquatopia; the cable car runs 09:00 to 11:30 and 13:30 to 17:00 on one ticket seller; the official Sun World page showed only opening hours of 09:30 to 17:00.
Cost basis: 1,450,000 VND per adult, about $55.98 each, $111.97 for two.
Sunset Sanato Beach Club
Why it matters: A beach club in the Sunset Town area at An Thoi, known for the sunset over the sea next to Kiss Bridge.
Why this visit: A relaxed evening that pairs with the tour day, since both are at the southern tip.
Time: 1.5 to 2 hours. Open about 9:00 to 21:00 or 22:00; one source says entry is free and another VND 100,000.
Cost basis: VND 100,000 per adult, $3.86 each, $7.72 for two (cost uncertain).
Lodging: Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort, Ong Lang (Deluxe Double or Twin with Pool View, breakfast included; $674 observed for the 3 nights Jan 1 to 4, about $224.67 a night); night 2 of 3.
Transfer: Tour pickup from the hotel is normally included; Grab to Sanato in the evening about VND 150,000 to 250,000 each way (estimate).
Weather alternative: If the sea is rough or the tour is cancelled, move the day to a cooking class or the pool; sea conditions on a given day are unknown until the evening before.

A southern day by taxi or rented scooter. Begin at the Coconut Prison (open 7:30 to 11:00 AM and 1:30 to 5:00 PM), then to Sao Beach and Khem Beach for sand and lunch at a beach cafe, but only go in the water if the debris reports (water hyacinth in January 2026) are not repeated. Keep the afternoon free for the pool; Fiona Mai warns that the island is bigger than it looks and a day with too many stops becomes a day in a car.
Phu Quoc Prison (Coconut Prison)
Why it matters: A national historical site, listed in 1995, where tens of thousands of revolutionary prisoners were held under French and American-era rule.
Why this visit: The island's main history stop, and a short sober counterpoint to the beaches.
Time: 1 to 1.5 hours. Open 7:30 to 11:00 and 13:30 to 17:00; closed at midday; entry is described as free by one source and VND 100,000 to 200,000 by another.
Cost basis: Free to VND 200,000 each ($15.44 for two at the top end); not counted in the base total.
Sao Beach and Khem Beach
Why it matters: Sao Beach is the island's postcard sand; Khem Beach is the calm southeastern beach reported as swamped by drifting water hyacinth and waste at the start of 2026.
Why this visit: It is the best sand on the island and is on every first-timer's list; the visit is a decision to make on the day.
Time: 3 hours. Late December and January bring the northeast monsoon, which can push seaweed and debris on to these beaches (Slow Vietnam, VnExpress); check the water before the trip and carry a backup plan.
Cost basis: Free; a beach cafe lunch is inside the meals line.
Lodging: Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort, Ong Lang (Deluxe Double or Twin with Pool View, breakfast included; $674 observed for the 3 nights Jan 1 to 4, about $224.67 a night); night 3 of 3.
Transfer: Grab or taxi, about VND 350,000 for the day by estimate; a scooter rents for VND 120,000 to 150,000 a day but needs a valid licence.
Weather alternative: If the beaches are covered in debris, spend the time at Ganh Dau fishing village or at the pool; the prison is partly covered.

A morning in the east: Ham Ninh fishing village for crab and the pier, then a fish sauce factory and a pepper farm on the way back, each free. Check out, then an afternoon flight to Ho Chi Minh City (about one hour) and the last night at the Adora Hotel.
Ham Ninh fishing village
Why it matters: One of the island's oldest villages and a working fishing port, known for crab served at waterfront stalls.
Why this visit: A genuine working village a short drive from the airport, best for a seafood lunch.
Time: 1.5 hours. Free to walk the pier; a crab meal costs about VND 200,000 to 350,000 per person per one guide.
Cost basis: Meal inside the meals line.
Khai Hoan fish sauce factory and a pepper farm
Why it matters: Phu Quoc fish sauce is made from anchovies in wooden barrels and is one of the island's best-known products; the island also grows pepper.
Why this visit: A quick, free look at the products behind the island's food, and the easiest gifts to bring home.
Time: 1 hour. The factory is open about 7:30 to 17:00 and the pepper farms about 7:00 to 18:00; both are free to enter.
Cost basis: Free; purchases are optional.
Lodging: Adora Hotel again for the night of Jan 4 (derived $81.71; not a quoted rate).
Transfer: Taxi to the factory and the airport; PQC to SGN about 1 hour; SGN to District 1 about VND 200,000 by Grab; a fare for Jan 4 was not seen (estimated $55 a ticket).
Weather alternative: If it is wet, skip the pepper farm and keep the factory; book the flight with a buffer in case of a delay.

A slow morning, a final coffee and a last bowl, check out by noon and leave the hotel by about 13:30 for the airport. International check-in opens about 3 hours before a 5:15 PM flight, so be at SGN by about 14:15. CI784 reaches Taipei at 9:40 PM; CI4 leaves at 11:45 PM and arrives at SFO at 6:45 PM the same calendar day.
Departure day: 16h30 of travel with one 2h05 airside connection at Taipei; the calendar date is unchanged because the clock goes back 15 hours between Ho Chi Minh City and California, so a flight that leaves Saigon at 5:15 PM lands in San Francisco at 6:45 PM the same date after 16h30 of travel.
Lodging: Checkout from the Adora Hotel; no further hotel night.
Transfer: Grab or taxi to SGN, about VND 150,000 to 250,000 ($6 to $10), 25 to 45 minutes; allow more for traffic.
Weather alternative: Not weather dependent; a delay on CI784 is a risk for the 2h05 connection and is handled by the carrier on a single ticket.

Where To Stay
Mid-range and well-reviewed local picks. Card-benefit status is a lead to check on the Chase Travel portal, which needs your own login; nightly prices here come from public pages and may differ there. Card benefits are upside, never subtracted from cost.
Adora Hotel District 1, near Ben Thanh Market
mid range · guest rating 8 / 10 (Booking.com, 1,044 reviews) · about USD 81.71 a night (Booking.com, Dec 25 2026 to Jan 1 2027, 2 adults, 1 room, Deluxe Room with City View, $572 for 7 nights, taxes and fees not itemized)
A 4-star hotel about five minutes' walk from Ben Thanh Market with breakfast included and a rooftop sauna; the cheapest of the well-reviewed District 1 options for the seven New Year nights.
Chase Travel status unverified. Not shown on Chase's public Edit page; the Chase Travel portal needs the user's own login, so check there. Booking.com's Genius Rewards Visa banner on the card is Booking's promotion, not Chase's.
NiK Hotel Thi Sach District 1
local boutique · guest rating 9.3 / 10 (Booking.com, 236 reviews) · about USD 110.86 a night (Booking.com, Dec 25 2026 to Jan 1 2027, 2 adults, 1 room, Superior No Window with afternoon tea, $776 for 7 nights, taxes and fees not itemized)
The best-reviewed breakfast-included hotel in District 1 on the same dates; rooms are listed without windows, so it suits travelers who prioritize rating and quiet over views.
Chase Travel status unverified. Not listed on Chase's public pages; check the Chase Travel portal after signing in.
Phu Quoc Bambusa Resort Ong Lang, Phu Quoc (west coast)
upper mid-range · guest rating 8.8 / 10 (Booking.com, 521 reviews) · about USD 224.67 a night (Booking.com, Jan 1 to Jan 4 2027, 2 adults, 1 room, Deluxe Double or Twin with Pool View, $674 for 3 nights, taxes and fees not itemized)
A pool resort on the calmer west coast away from the southeast beaches that were reported covered with debris in January 2026; breakfast included and 521 guest reviews.
Chase Travel status unverified. Not on Chase's public pages; third-party lists name other Phu Quoc hotels as Edit properties, not this one. Check the portal.
Pearl Hotel Phu Quoc An Thoi, south Phu Quoc
mid range · guest rating 8.3 / 10 (Booking.com, 91 reviews) · about USD 101 a night (Booking.com, Jan 1 to Jan 4 2027, 2 adults, 1 room, Double Room with Mountain View, $303 for 3 nights, taxes and fees not itemized)
The cheap fallback for the island nights, $303 for three nights, near the Sunset Town and cable car area; further from the west-coast calm and from the night market.

What Travelers Say
“Phu Quoc is very worth visiting but only for the right kind of traveler.” Phu Quoc is worth visiting but not for seclusion: it is busy at peak season, dominated by large corporate attractions, and a day spanning north and south can mean over an hour in a car each way; street food and ride-hailing, though, are cheap. This complicates the island leg.
Confirms December to March as the most comfortable months with calm sea, but lists construction noise, occasional debris and uneven Wi-Fi, and says southern beaches tend to stay cleaner and hotels clean their own frontage. This partly contradicts the debris report for the south.
Ho Chi Minh City is gridlocked around Notre-Dame and Nguyen Hue on Christmas Eve and back to normal by the morning of Dec 25; budget 25 to 40 percent above normal for Dec 20 to Jan 3 and expect compulsory gala dinners at resorts on Dec 24 and 31. This is why the plan arrives on Dec 25 and keeps New Year Eve at the city hotel.
Khem and Sao beaches were covered in drifting water hyacinth and household waste at the start of January 2026; one visitor who stayed about ten days near Khem Beach said she had not dared to swim, and resorts cleaned only their own frontage. This is the strongest warning for the Jan 1 to 4 island stay and the reason for the west-coast hotel.
Open Flags
- E-visa processing time conflicts between two Vietnamese government pages (3 working days against 5 to 30), and whether the SGN port and a pre-arrival declaration are covered.
- No China Airlines own checkout total was read; Skyscanner shows $4,392 to $4,881 for the same itinerary and the cheapest row's carry-on status is unknown.
- Taiwan airside transit for Indian passports is stated generally, not for Indian nationals; whether the Taiwan online arrival card applies to transit passengers, the baggage allowance and the fare class of the ticket are unknown.
- HAN and DAD were not re-priced this run, and the Dec 19 window was searched from SFO only; OAK and SJC were checked only for Dec 23 and have only two-stop options.
- No Jan 1 or Jan 4 SGN-PQC fare was seen; $55 a ticket is an estimate.
- No property-direct hotel total could be read for either hotel; taxes and cancellation terms for the exact rooms are unconfirmed, and the Jan 4 Adora night is derived.
- Phu Quoc beach conditions for Jan 1 to 4 are unknown (debris on the southeast in January 2026); no late-December typhoon probability was found.
- US re-entry (valid US visa stamps through Jan 5, 2027) and remote-work permission are user-attested, not verified; the Dec 19 window depends on remote work.
- No Chase Travel status could be confirmed for any lodging; the portal needs the user's login.
- No 2026 to 27 New Year Eve programme for Ho Chi Minh City is published; Dec 25, Dec 31 and Jan 1 special hours were not found for several sites.
- [source] Misattributed traveler quote. The recommendation section attributes to Lilia the statements that Vietnam's destination is busy, overbuilt in places, and not for travelers who want seclusion. Lilia's text in voices-vietnam-2.txt does not say these things. Her text mentions construction noise, debris and Wi-Fi. The 'not for seclusion' and 'overbuilt' wording appears in Fiona Mai's text (voices-vietnam-1.txt).
- [source] Ham Ninh crab price has the wrong unit and is garbled. The logistics line says 'a crab meal costs about VND 200,000 to 350,000 per person per one guide'. The evidence gives VND 200,000 to 350,000 per kilogram (VietnamSpot; vietjet/visitphuquoc guide, 'Hàm Ninh crab (kg)'). fasttrack-vietnam gives VND 100,000 to 200,000 per plate. The 'per person' unit and 'per one guide' phrasing are not supported.
- [source] Cu Chi tour price uses a 'From' listing price as the booked price. Line 237 and the cost total treat $33.57 per person as the price. The evidence (visit-cu-chi-tunnels.txt line 18) shows it is a 'From $33.57' starting price on a third-party listing with entry included, and the page notes some options are non-refundable.
- [source] Fiona Mai's transfer time is embellished. The draft says 'each way' for the taxi or transfer time. The evidence says the trip 'can easily take more than an hour' without 'each way'.
- [consistency] draft.json line 889 takeaway states 'This is why the plan arrives on Dec 25'. The arrival date is driven by the CI3 flight schedule, which crosses the date line, not by Christmas Eve gridlock. The causal attribution is misattributed to the Day Trips Vietnam source's gridlock claim.
- [consistency] draft.json line 802 whyHere presents Adora's 'about five minutes' walk' and 'rooftop sauna' as facts. These come from a third-party listing, not the hotel's direct source. Line 1214 of the draft attributes them correctly, so the two passages are inconsistent.
- [coverage] The memo range sentence says 'Plan on about USD 6,281 to 7,589', but the stated Dec 23 range high is $8,615.79. The $7,589 figure is only the China Airlines fare case, which is disclosed in the same paragraph, so the headline range reads as narrower than the table.
- [coverage] The Cu Chi Tunnels entry presents VND 125,000 as the current admission price. The official 2026 tariff in the evidence is VND 135,000, so the older listing should not be presented as current.
- [coverage] The Ben Thanh Vespa entry shows 'From USD$98' as a per-person rate. The source does not label the basis, so the per-person presentation is unsupported.
- [opportunities] STARLUX-related fare is inconsistent between prose and the structured unitUsd: the prose states $2,756 while unitUsd is $2,755.50.

Your Action Plan
Resolve high-priority checks before nonrefundable commitments. Verified routing, inclusive prices and eligibility can change the value assessment; changed hours or weather can change the itinerary.
- High priority: Start the Vietnam e-visa application path and confirm processing time
Why: The Immigration Department page says 3 working days; the Vietnam Embassy in India page says 5 to 30 working days and advises filing 7 to 40 before departure; the entry route is the only hard dependency on the trip date.
How to check: Open the e-visa portal at evisa.gov.vn in a normal browser, read the FAQ on processing time and entry ports (Tan Son Nhat), and check whether a pre-arrival declaration is required.
Decision impact: Confirming 3 working days relaxes the application deadline to about mid-December; the embassy's 40 working day advice makes about Oct 28 the last safe date. A refusal or a missing SGN port would end the Dec 23 plan.
- High priority: Re-price the China Airlines CI3/CI781 and CI784/CI4 itinerary on the airline's own checkout and with the chosen provider
Why: Skyscanner shows $4,392 to $4,881 for the same itinerary and a $27 per person move between two reads minutes apart; the ceiling gap is $103.51 in the middle case.
How to check: Search SFO to SGN, Dec 23 to Jan 5, 2 adults, Economy on china-airlines.com and on the cheaper OTA rows; read back dates, fare brand, baggage and the total before any decision.
Decision impact: An airline total near $4,396 with a checked bag leaves the plan $104 over the ceiling unless the island hotel costs less; $4,881 pushes the middle case to about $7,589 and moves the verdict to Weak fit.
- High priority: Confirm Taiwan airside transit for Indian passport holders and the fare's baggage
Why: The Taiwan page does not name Indian nationals and the fare class and baggage allowance of this ticket are unknown.
How to check: Ask China Airlines (or read the Taoyuan Airport transfer page in a normal browser) whether Indian nationals on a same-ticket connection under 24 hours stay airside without a visa, and whether the ticket includes one or two 23 kg bags.
Decision impact: A visa requirement for airside transit would end the Taipei routing; a one-bag fare changes the reserve and may require a second bag fee.
- Medium priority: Get Jan 1 and Jan 4 SGN-PQC fares
Why: The $55 per ticket assumption comes from off-peak "from" fares and one snippet; no near-holiday fare was seen.
How to check: Search SGN to PQC on Jan 1, 2027 and PQC to SGN on Jan 4 on the Vietnam Airlines, VietJet and Vietravel Airlines pages for 2 adults, with checked bag.
Decision impact: Fares near $26 save about $116; fares near $90 add about $140 and could force a shorter island stay.
- Medium priority: Compare Phu Quoc hotel totals closer to the date
Why: Booking.com showed $289 to $674 for three nights from Jan 1, no property-direct total was read, and rates doubled for stays spanning New Year.
How to check: Re-run Booking.com for Jan 1 to 4, 2 adults, 1 room, and the hotel's own verified site or email for Phu Quoc Bambusa and Pearl Hotel, reading taxes and the cancellation deadline.
Decision impact: At or under about $570 for three nights brings the middle case to the ceiling; at $674 it stays about $104 over and above $700 it goes further over.
- Medium priority: Look at Phu Quoc beach conditions the week before Jan 1
Why: Debris covered Khem and Sao in January 2026 and the monsoon drives it each year.
How to check: Read recent Phu Quoc hotel and Google Maps beach photos and the Phu Quoc Department of Agriculture and Environment notices.
Decision impact: Clean beaches keep the island leg; recurring debris on the west coast would move the plan toward an all-Ho Chi Minh City version.
- Low priority: Verify New Year Eve plans for Nguyen Hue and the Dec 31 hotel policy
Why: No 2026 to 27 programme is published and the Dec 31 plan relies on a free event and on the hotel having no compulsory dinner.
How to check: Check the Ho Chi Minh City tourism notices from December and ask the hotel in writing about any Dec 31 dinner charge.
Decision impact: A cancelled event leaves the rooftop bar alternative; a compulsory dinner at $50 to $150 per person changes the New Year night cost.
Limitations And Freshness
Research expires after 30 days; price snapshots become historical after 24 hours. Always recheck current availability. Failed or incomplete checks are not confirmed facts.
- Actual researcher model identity is unverified; configured model is not runtime proof.
- Regular browser canvas used; cookie and login isolation are unknown.
- No airline-direct checkout total was read: the China Airlines booking widget kept its default LAX origin and the airline row on Skyscanner opened no airline page, so the flight total is a Skyscanner aggregator quote ($4,396, provider range $4,392 to $4,881).
- No property-direct hotel total was read; Booking.com totals do not itemize taxes or fees, and the Jan 4 Adora night is derived rather than quoted.
- Vietnam e-visa processing time conflicts between the Immigration Department page (3 working days) and the Vietnam Embassy in India page (5 to 30 working days, advising filing 7 to 40 working days ahead); the primary evisa.gov.vn host failed a certificate check and was not bypassed.
- Taiwan transit evidence is a general Bureau of Consular Affairs rule dated 2017; Taoyuan Airport and US government pages returned HTTP 403 and Indian-specific transit rules and the fare baggage allowance are unconfirmed.
- No Jan 1 or Jan 4 domestic fare, no official hydromet climate page, no itemised Phu Quoc menu and no Chase Travel confirmation could be read; those lines are estimates or marked unverified.
- HAN and DAD were not re-priced this run (an archived Oct 10 snapshot favored SGN but is historical); the Dec 19 window was searched from SFO only and the page was still loading providers; OAK and SJC were checked only for Dec 23.
- Weather is secondary-source climatology, not a forecast, and no 2026 to 27 New Year programme or special holiday hours were found for most sites.
- Some evidence timestamps are to the nearest minute from the sandbox clock; subagent-written evidence files carry a fetch-window time.
